For this episode, Let's Talk Wild EP 27 - Armored Expansion, The Rise Of The Armadillo, I'll discuss how the Nine-Banded Armadillo has its armor on, is digging forward, and taking over several lands across the United States.

Pollinators, Songbirds, and Creepy Crawlies with Thomas Peters

Pollinators, Songbirds, and Creepy Crawlies with Thomas Peters

This week on Serenbe Stories, we’re chatting with Thomas Peters, Sernebe’s Director of Landscape and Horticulture, all about the creatures that call Serenbe home - from songbirds and butterflies to snakes and other creepy crawlies (Halloween is just around the corner, after all). Thomas joined the Serenbe team in 2017 after receiving his Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Georgia. In his time here, he has played a central role in implementing natural approaches to landscape management, planting pollinator habitats for a thriving local ecosystem, and ensuring that Serenbe remains a place where people embrace the natural world. In addition to our discussion about Serenbe’s wildlife, we also talk about Thomas’s lifelong passion for the outdoors and how we can all learn to value nature in its many forms.

The Very Real, and Very Elusive, Pink Fairy Armadillo

The Very Real, and Very Elusive, Pink Fairy Armadillo

The Pink Fairy Armadillo is, in fact, a real animal, but it is elusive enough to be considered mythical. The pink fairy armadillo (Chlamyphorus truncatus) is the smallest species of armadillo, and it is known as ‘the sand swimmer’ because they look like they are literally swimming through the sand. This animal is so rare in the wild and does so poorly in captivity that locals say, "you can track down any animal — except the pink fairy armadillo.”

In The Good The Bad The News
In the Good, Sunisa "Suni" Lee is the first Hmong-American Olympian and is kicking butts and taking names, and a French Panda gave birth to wins.
In the Bad, please don’t mansplain to a female Olympic gold medalist and Turkey is on fire and no one is talking about it.

Don’t plan a trip to the zoo to see a Pink Fairy Armadillo,  individuals caught in the wild normally die during transport or within a couple days of arriving at their captive facilities. They literally die from stress over a change in location. Don’t plan to see them in the wild either. The Pink fairy armadillos are so rare that the person who has seen the most of them in the wild has only seen 12 in the last 45 years.

Are Pink Fairy Armadillos endangered? Probably, but we don’t have enough information on their populations to know for sure.

What do we know about Pink Fairy Armadillos? Listen now to find out.

Genes for all - Naked Genetics 16.06.14
Genes, genomes and genetic technology are playing increasingly important parts in our lives, industries, food and healthcare, and at a point in the not-too-distant future we're probably going to have to grapple with at least some of the contents of our DNA. But is the public really prepared to look inside its genes? Plus, the company aiming to bring molecular biology labs for all, and our gene of the month is crunchy on the outside. This is the Naked Genetics podcast for June 2016 with me, Dr Kat Arney, brought to you in association with The Genetics Society, online at genetics.org.uk.
