The Roman Empire.  Shakespeare.  Marlon Brando.  James Mason.  With that kind of a lineup, a classic is unavoidable.  Join Sean Marlon Newcombe and Dr. Gary Stickel as they discuss the 1953 Classic, "Julius Caesar."  One of the most important events in world history dramatized by one of the greatest writers in world history, the story of Julius Caesar's assassination is timeless and this film did not disappoint!

In this painting analysis we will look a the painting 'On the Way to Anacapri' by Gerda Wegener (1885-1940) a Danish artist who worked as a successful fashion illustrator. In addition to this she also created glass mosaics, erotic art and also painted. In the public consciousness she is perhaps mostly remembered for her marriage and relationship with Lili Elbe, who is one of the first recorded cases of someone undergoing gender reassignment surgery. Before her transition Lili has been posing secretly as a model for Gerda, which when revealed caused a huge scandal, leading the couple to flee to Paris, which was a more bohemian and liberal city that accepted their lifestyle. Sadly for legal reasons the marriage was dissolved but they remained close and Gerda was deeply affected by her passing away. 

In this episode we will explore Lili and Gerda's relationship as represented in 'On the Way to Anacapri' as well as discussing Gerda's career and versatility as an artist.

Glasgow-based artist France-Lise McGurn has chosen to talk about Art Deco painter Tamara de Lempicka’s drawing Sur La Plage, made circa 1926. This drawing from the David Roberts Collection becomes the basis for a conversation that touches on the female nude, Madonna videos and cigarette packets.

This is a new series of conversations as part of Broadcasts: Podcast, which will open up the David Roberts Collection through artists' encounters with works in the collection. 

Artists featured in the collection have been invited to choose a work other than their own as the starting point of a conversation about when they first came across the artist and their work, how this has been an influence on their practice, and the impact collecting has on them.

Episode 7 of the Museum of Femininity explores the subject of the Femme Fatale; dark, mysterious, sexually alluring and dangerously manipulative. We examine the proto femme fatale seen in Greek Mythology and Biblical text from Medusa to Salome, delve into evolving artistic interpretations and the male gaze fuelled social construct of this feminine archetype and ponder on the role of women in 1930's and 40's Film Noir. As well as this we look at the inspiration behind many fictional Femme Fatale's by telling the story of Ruth Snyder who murdered her husband in 1928 and was one of the first women to be executed in the electric chair.

Tom Blachford and Kate Ballis are one of my favourite creative couples. They are both photographers, though this hasn’t always been the case. For the first few years of their relationship, it was only Tom who was the photographer, while Kate was working as a lawyer. Yet what started as a shared passion between them has grown into a thriving art practice and ever-expanding commercial endeavour.

They have built a highly successful wedding photography company, RaspberryRobot, which allows them to support their travel adventures - and it was on one such journey that Tom fell in love with the architecture of Palm Springs, which led him to create the Midnight Modern series, which opens in Sydney this Thursday, May 26 at The Black Eye Gallery in Darlinghurst in Sydney.

Of all the insights into their life and process that they shared, it was the way in which they combined their strengths to maximize both of their offerings as artists that I really admired.

I was very excited to sit down and chat with Tom – and Kate to talk about sharing life, space and practice in this, The Naked Creative Show: Couples Edition, all about Tom Blachford and Kate Ballis.
