    Rachel Suflita McKee

    Rachel Suflita McKee

In this episode I talk with 2016 graduate of the College of Saint Rose, Rachel Suflita McKee, about her path from intern to art director at the Boston-based design studio, Pinkergreen. She talks about how the diversity of projects (Boston University Global Music Festival, Flex Rx, Flyte 70, The Bug Club, etc.) at a small studio is special and keeps her engaged with graphic design and the people she collaborates with on those projects. We also discuss a challenging design school assignment, about graphic design style, that had both of us considering some of the ethical questions involved in the creative process. We talk about the wonderful aspects of life outside of work like baking (so much butter), cooking (Bolognese), vacationing (in Maine), and of course yoga where goats climb on you as you try to stretch — it’s mostly about playing with goats. And finally, Rachel shares the wonderful news that she will be a new mom in March. Time to rest up people, episode seven is here now.

The Other Side of the Windowsill: Self Reflection, Reinvention, and Helping Other Recognize Their Potential With Margo

The Other Side of the Windowsill: Self Reflection, Reinvention, and Helping Other Recognize Their Potential With Margo

This week Margo and her sister play a bit of a role reversal and Margo is interviewed In the Windowsill! As the creator and host of the podcast, Margo rarely shares intimately about herself but she figured it was time to change that. Margo shares her experience with wire art and the moment a piece of art went from an act of creativity to monetized creativity, working in wholesale, collaborating with artists to create unique retail products, and bridging the gap between creatives and their businesses. She also discusses her love of music, the personal growth she’s experienced over the past year, and her current pursuits in silversmithing and jewelry making. With the help of Shelley, Margo explores her insights on reinvention, self-reflection, and her plans for 2024.

    212. Embracing Risks and Seizing Opportunities: The Journey of a Creative Entrepreneur with Rob Jelinski

    212. Embracing Risks and Seizing Opportunities: The Journey of a Creative Entrepreneur with Rob Jelinski

The Emotional Rollercoaster of Entrepreneurship: "Many times you feel the high highs of the mountains and the low lows of the valley minutes, in between each other, days in between each other." — Rob Jelinski

I had the pleasure of having Rob Jelinski as a guest on this episode of Creative Chats podcast, where we discussed taking risks, embracing opportunities, and the power of mentorship in the creative industry.

With 20 years of creative entrepreneurship, Rob brings a wealth of expertise (strategy, branding, marketing, & design) as he leads his award-winning, family of brands which encompasses Infinite Design Agency, Think Art Director, and more.

Here are some key takeaways from the episode:

🔑 Takeaway 1: Say "Yes" to the Opportunities That Scare You Saying "yes" to opportunities, even if they seem intimidating or uncertain, can lead to defining moments in your life. Don't let the fear of rejection hold you back. Embrace the unknown and see where it takes you.

🔑 Takeaway 2: Embrace the Unpredictable Journey Success isn't defined by one big opportunity that revolutionizes everything. It's a continuous process of growth, personal development, and building relationships. Embrace the ups and downs of your creative journey and recognize that each step is part of your unique path.

🔑 Takeaway 3: Champion Community Over Competition Competition can lead to negative behaviors and self-doubt. Instead, focus on building a supportive community of fellow creatives. Encourage and appreciate the work of others, ask questions, and learn from different perspectives. Together, we can elevate the creative industry and inspire each other.

    Domonique Brown

If you’ve been at your local Target lately, then there’s a chance you’re familiar with illustrator and entrepreneur Domonique Brown. She’s the founder of DomoInk, a contemporary lifestyle brand including apparel and home décor, all with art by Domonique. Pick up some of her products in Target’s Black History Month collection and bless your space, y’all!

We also talked about breaking out from your 9-to-5 job to do you own thing, her aspirations to go into fine art, and we discussed Black art and mainstream exposure through other Black creatives. Domonique is a woman on the rise, and I know we’ll only be seeing more and more of her work in the future!

    Lauren Brown

    Lauren Brown

If you saw the Google Doodle earlier this month of gaming trailblazer Gerald “Jerry” Lawson, then you’ve gotten a sample of the amazing work of this week’s guest — art director and illustrator Lauren Brown.

Lauren talked to me about the ins and outs of her current role at Wizards of the Coast, which includes doing art direction for the popular Magic the Gathering game series. She also spoke about growing up in New Jersey and attending undergrad there, getting her MFA at Savannah College of Art and Design, and shared how she started her career in animation and gaming from there. Lauren is also a podcaster, so we talked shop a little bit about her show Painted in Color, and she delved into what the podcast has taught her over the years. If you’re interested in getting into animation, then I hope Lauren’s story inspires you to follow your dreams!

Ep 46 - Doodling at Google with Matthew Cruickshank

Ep 46 - Doodling at Google with Matthew Cruickshank

Matthew Cruickshank (Art Director at Google Doodles) speaks about his sketchbook-ing road-trip down historic Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles to create a … doodle!

The question that drives the conversation is this - How far will a Doodler go for a Google Doodle? The answer ~2500 miles! But another answer - hundreds of pages of sketchbook drawings. Still another answer - hours under a hot sun by the side of a desolate road.

Matthew speaks about the abiding role of sketchbooks in his life, drawing from real life as a way to “be grounded”, and the incredible work of Google Doodles in our lives.

    The Art of Art Direction

    The Art of Art Direction

    Welcome to Blazon

Art Directors in advertising work on campaigns and commissions where they have to manage complexity to deliver a media tapestry woven together by a team of creative talent. It is this complexity that requires art directors to have multidisciplinary knowledge and experience.

In this episode we talk to Sophie Allen about her journey into Art Direction and what it means to be an Art Director in the advertising space.

Sophie is an Art Director, Motion and Graphic Designer who pushes cultural and social boundaries through bold and daring creative executions. Sophie has worked with some of the world's leading brands, such as Nike, Google, Adidas, Warner Music and Nokia.
