    117 - LONG SHOT w Andrew Dalton

We conclude our Mayhem Series of True Crime documentaries with a recap of the 2017 documentary LONG SHOT by Jacob LaMendola (streaming on Netflix).

It’s the story of Juan Catalan who was accused of the execution style murder of 16 year old Martha Puebla in Los Angeles. Catalan was up for the death penalty but his dedicated lawyer hunted for his only alibi that would exonerate him - video footage from a Dodgers game.

Our guest is Andrew Dalton who has been a reporter for 16 years at the Associated Press. He has written about murder, wildfires, murder, politics, busted water mains, murder, celebrity deaths, and the occasional murder. He currently covers the intersection of entertainment and courts from the Los Angeles bureau of the ancient and venerable news outlet. An ethnic Mormon, he was raised in Utah and New Mexico, went to college in Santa Cruz and now lives with his wife and three kids in South Pasadena just a few miles from Dodger Stadium, where he regularly attends games, but only for the alibi.

Largest Requests Ever For High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area
Trump's Budget includes largest requests ever for High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) and Drug-Free Communities Grants. President Donald Trump is seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for two anti-drug grant programs that the White House Office of Management and Budget called “duplicative” and worthy of elimination. After swift push-back from lawmakers and outside interest groups earlier this month, Trump sent Congress "the highest funding amounts ever requested" for the two programs, according to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

Vermont Gov. has five days to sign marijuana legalization bi...
    S. 22, a bill to legalize cannabis in Vermont for adults over 21, landed on Republican Governor Phil Scott's desk – potentially making the state the first in the country to legalize marijuana through the legislative process, and not a ballot initiative. The bill has already been approved by both chambers of the state legislature; now the governor has five days to decide whether to sign or to veto it. But even if he does neither, on Wednesday, May 24th, it would automatically become law.

Democratic lawmakers called for legalizing marijuana, taking a step toward tolls, cutting aid to towns, and opening a third casino as part of budget recommendations released Tuesday. ven though marijuana legalization is included in the proposal, Democratic legislators concede that they do not have enough votes in their own caucus to pass the measure. But they placed the item into the package to spur conversation and help balance the $20 billion annual budget.
