In the News: Geopolitics, Canada’s Carbon Tax and Clean Energy Stocks

This week, Peter and Jackie discuss recent news headlines, including some scary topics on this Halloween podcast recording. Here are some of the topics they discussed:

    · Rising geopolitical risks.  Why are the oil markets calm in the face of the Israel-Hamas conflict and the potential for an oil outage?

    · ExxonMobil and Chevron announce significant acquisitions.  In contrast to the news headlines, Peter and Jackie argue that these acquisitions could make sense, even in the scenario that oil and gas demand declines.

    · Clean energy stocks tumble.  Clean energy indexes like the WilderHill Clean Energy ETF (PBW) are down about 35 percent since the summer. Why are stocks down, and what are the likely implications?

    · Canada announces a three-year pause in the carbon tax for heating oil to help with affordability.  Yet, other sources of heating in the country do not get a break.  Jackie and Peter discuss the outrage in areas of the country that do not depend on heating oil for heat, as well as other possible implications.

Medavie, A Company Changing Health Delivery In Canada

Medavie is a company that few in this region would be familiar with, although a third of Atlantic Canadians are covered through benefit programs with Blue Cross which, along with Medavie Health Services, are offered by the company. Medavie's mission is to improve the well-being of Canadians. Our conversation with Medavie's CEO Bernard Lord (30th Premier of New Brunswick) provides an excellent overview of one the region's largest and most important head office companies. The company has nearly 9,000 employees of which more than 5,000 are in Atlantic Canada, which provide $400 million of wages within the region. Medavie is the company behind the management of MSI in Nova Scotia, as well as providing EMS ambulance services in six provinces, including the three Maritime Provinces where it operates more than 300 ambulances. Medavie is a not-for-profit company which reinvests its surpluses back into the company and the community through the Medavie Foundation. Lords talks about the company's continued growth opportunities and the role and benefits of private sector companies providing publicly funded healthcare services.

Inside the Fruit Machine and Canada’s LGBT Purge

Inside the Fruit Machine and Canada’s LGBT Purge
"It's the work of all of us to make sure people are informed."

During the Cold War, Canadians became targets of a widespread, systemic effort to identify and expel all any queer people working in the military or public service. This included today's guest, Martine Roy.

Martine was a young woman from Montréal who, looking for a purpose-driven career, joined the Armed Forces. Her world was shattered when one day, she was arrested out of the blue, and subjected to rounds of humiliating interrogation on the subject of her intimate life and sexuality. Eventually, she was dishonourably discharged for being in a relationship with another woman.

This so-called "homosexual witch hunt" lasted for over three decades, and the stories of those persecuted during this time are shared in Sarah Fodey's 2018 documentary, The Fruit Machine.

In this episode, we hear from Martine what it was like to live through this traumatizing experience, but also how she's found new purpose in her life and what steps have been taken to secure justice for the hundreds of people affected by the Purge.

    Welcome to Trans Canada Stories!

In this episode, hosts Emma (she/her) and Cynthia (she/her) talk about the reason behind this podcast, and how they came to know each other. The two also have a conversation on the subject of transitioning as a process, the importance of being able to access gender affirming care, and the role of the queer community as a support resource.

Emma shares a beautiful story about her own transition, recalling how the experience drew her closer to not only her community, but to her mother as well.

Later in the show, Emma and Cyn speak with Felix Vandergrift (He/Him). Felix is a researcher and works in governmental relations. He is an active advocate for TGNB rights, access to gender affirming healthcare, supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, harm reduction and human rights.

Felix recently underwent top surgery in Dartmouth thanks to the plastics team at the QEII and is continuing to push for more access to better gender affirming care for all TGNB folks in the province.

    Welcome to Trans Canada Stories!

It's a podcast dedicated to cutting through the headlines and clickbait to tell real stories about real trans people living in Canada today.

"This show isn't going to be a bunch of inspiration porn about people having terrible lives and overcoming challenges..."

This is a place to celebrate trans joy and the successes (big and small) which inspire it. We'll desensationalize the stories of trans people to tell honest accounts of the trans experience. We want to provide role models and heroes for the community to look up to and admire, while helping to foster the development and strengthening of trans communities across Canada.

Debbie Rathwell On 100 Women Who Care Of Greater Saint John

Debbie Rathwell On 100 Women Who Care Of Greater Saint John

Several years ago, I was part of a group in Saint John that started a fundraising initiative called 100 Men Who Care. The idea was to bring together men to fundraise for non-profit organizations in the community. We were inspired by a group of women who had founded a similar group in Saint John in 2013 – the 100 Women Who Care of Greater Saint John.

We had a good run, hosting a series of events over a two-year period.

But we didn’t have the staying power of the women, who are still going strong after nearly 10 years … and close to a million dollars in funds raised for local organizations doing essential work in the community.

But we didn’t have a Debbie Rathwell, one of the founders of the women’s group.

Debbie runs a company called “Red” that does corporate event planning as part of its services – she has the kinds of skills and experience you need to make this kind of initiative successful and sustainable.

I’ve always admired the work of this group and have been planning to have Debbie on the show when they hit the million-dollar mark.

They’re not there yet, but they’re close as Debbie told me in our chat recorded the week after their most recent meeting.

The group voted to give $26,000 to an organization called “The Compassionate Grief Centre”, which works with people struggling with illness, grief, loss and life’s challenges.

That meeting took the 100 Women Who Care group over the nine-hundred-thousand-dollar mark.

In our chat, Debbie talks about the power and inspiration of women coming together to help people in their community.

We also talk about her career journey, which began with her childhood dream of becoming a professional figure skater.

And we discuss our personal connections too. I grew up down the street from Debbie - she was actually one of my babysitters when I was a kid.

Lori Weir Of Four Eyes Financial On 'Riding The Waves' Of Entrepreneurship

Lori Weir Of Four Eyes Financial On 'Riding The Waves' Of Entrepreneurship

The serial entrepreneur from Saint John chats with Mark Leger about her career in business and the fintech company that now employs more than 30 people and has more than 3,000 financial advisors using its platform.

Loir and I work just down the street from each other – me in my home office and Lori in her office in a nearby commercial building. But on the latest episode of the Huddle "Home Office" podcast, we had to connect by video call because of the Covid-19 restrictions. It was probably for the best given how cold it was.

"It gives me a lot of joy," says Lori. "Entrepreneurship is challenging. People think there are these overnight successes...that is very rarely the case, if ever. I still have yet to see it myself, though I'm sure it happens from time to time."

"[Being an entrepreneur] requires a lot of patience for outcomes. At the same time, you have to be planning and making decisions very quickly. You have to be relentless in making them daily. You have to be patient, you have to make decisions with limited information, so your core belief in what you're doing is really what allows you to ride the waves."

No Tour Of New Brunswick Is Complete Without A Night In Jail

On the latest in a series of conversations about their Love For Local New Brunswick "Electric Summer Social Tour," Jason Gallant and Mylène Theriault chat with Mark Leger about their night at an old Dorchester jailhouse turned into an Airbnb; a tour of the lush Kingsbrae Gardens in St. Andrews; and the raucous Acadian Day celebrations in Caraquet.

Huddle is a media partner for the tour that has Jason and Mylène travelling to 104 communities in 104 days. That doesn’t mean Mark gets to go along for the ride, but it does mean he can connect with them on the road and live vicariously through their adventures. On the latest Huddle “Home Office” podcast, I chat with them at the end of a day in St. Andrews, as just as they’re about to leave to catch the ferries to Campobello Island.

He’s now the founder and CEO of Introhive, a software company that employs around 350 people in the Maritimes, U.S. Europe and India. Huddle has covered the various stages of Millennia’s growth, from their appearance on Dragons’ Den, to a venture capital raise of more than $500,000, to the tea being sold in Sobeys and Safeway stores across the country. When Mark Leger heard the news that Millennia TEA would be sold in Whole Foods Canada stores, he decided it was time for a chat, fittingly, in the old Red Rose Tea factory in Saint John.
