Back problems are among patients’ most frequent complaints to their doctors. Nearly 65 million Americans report a recent episode of back pain. Some 16 million adults — 8 percent of all adults — experience persistent or chronic back pain, and as a result are limited in certain everyday activities. Back pain is the sixth most costly condition in the United States.

This morning we will talk with Dr. Cochran about prevention and treatment of spine pain as well as areas of specialization at Aultman Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine and Aultman’s Back and Spine Center.

The Critical Need for Blood Donations

The Critical Need for Blood Donations

Many people believe that most blood is needed after major disasters. However, daily personal emergencies and ongoing medical needs of thousands of patients require a constant and ready blood supply. It’s the blood already on hospital shelves that saves lives.  Today there is a critical need for blood donations and we would like to dedicate our show to sharing information about blood donations.

Every day in the U.S., patients in hospitals, surgical centers and emergency treatment facilities need approximately:

    • 36,000 units of red blood cells
    • 7,000 units of platelets
    • 10,000 units of plasma

When you donate blood, you’re part of something bigger than yourself. It is a simple act and the ultimate pay-it-forward moment.  Please enjoy our show today as we talk with Allyson and Lori about the process of donating blood, the safety precautions in place and the positive impact donating blood has on people’s lives.

We’d like to remind our listeners that today’s program is also available on our podcast which can be downloaded from the app store on your mobile phone. Look for Health Matters with the Medicine Center Pharmacy in your favorite podcast app and please subscribe.

    The Compassionate Journey

    The Compassionate Journey

People who are suffering or nearing the end of life often have spiritual needs as compelling as their physical concerns.  That person might find peace by resolving unsettled issues with friends or family.  They might appreciate and find comfort in visits from social workers or counselors.  Many people find solace in their faith.  In addition, the friends and family members of the person who is suffering often find themselves wondering what to do, and how to help while also coping with their own feelings.  Today Chaplain Terry is with us to discuss a compassionate journey and share his insight for those of us who are either faced with the journey ourselves or are journeying with a friend or loved one.

Darrell Maze, Chaplain Aultman Compassionate Care Center

Hospice care is designed to help terminally ill people live out their final days in as much comfort as possible. The practical application of palliative care, in most cases, focuses on alleviating physical pain. But there are other elements involved.

Emotional, psychological, and spiritual comfort all take on vital importance at the end of life. Faith may take precedence over everything else in these moments. No matter what a hospice patient believes, the interconnected concepts of mind, body, and soul are deeply ingrained across most cultures. When faced with their own mortality, people often feel an urgent need to get their spiritual affairs in order. At its best, hospice care can allow patients to incorporate faith into their life during their final days as much or as little as they desire.

This morning, Darrell will talk with us about his role as a hospice chaplain at Aultman Hospital.

When To Use Urgent Care vs. Emergency Room

When To Use Urgent Care vs. Emergency Room

All too often, illness or injury appears out of the blue: You wake up in the middle of the night with intense abdominal pain. You stumble while carrying groceries up a flight of stairs, and cannot put weight on your swollen ankle. Or your baby spikes a high fever on the weekend.

When these situations occur, we’re often faced with uncertainty about where to go for care, especially if the symptoms seem severe and our regular doctor’s office is closed.

While the answer is not always simple, knowing the difference between a walk-in clinic, an urgent care center and a hospital emergency room can make a huge difference, especially if you have a medical emergency.

Today we will talk with Dr. Elias and learn about the difference between the Emergency Room and Urgent Care, while also discussing common health concerns during this cold and flu season.

Fall Prevention with Pharmacist Melissa Overly and Physical Therapist Michelle McCann

Fall Prevention with Pharmacist Melissa Overly and Physical Therapist Michelle McCann

Fall prevention may not seem like a lively topic, but it’s important.  Each year, millions of adults aged 65 and older fall.  Falls can cause moderate to severe injuries, but the most important message is that falls can be prevented.  Falls are often considered to be part of a syndrome.  In other words, more than one thing may be causing the condition.  As a result, there is often a benefit from a team approach where various disciplines can contribute to the assessment and treatment of the condition.  Today, our discussion includes both a physical therapist and a pharmacist to get their perspectives on fall prevention.
