    Episode 24: The Proposition

    Episode 24: The Proposition

This week on Remainders, Darren and Patrick cover the 2005 Australian western The Proposition.

Directed by John Hillcoat (The Road) with a screenplay and score by Nick Cave, the outback never looked or sounded so violent. The plot is simple but commanding: a vicious criminal must hunt down and kill his older brother in order to save his younger brother from execution.

The poetic nature of death and murder is nothing new to Nick Cave, and in The Proposition he goes hard on morality in an immoral world. We also dive into Cave’s post-punk roots and current status as artistic philosopher, the nature of grieving, the history of Australian subjugation, new book recommendations, Paul Thomas Anderson rankings, and wondering how Ray Winstone and Guy Pearce can act in a swarm without bug repellant. Australia…what fresh hell is this?

    S2E67: The Great Molasses Flood

    S2E67: The Great Molasses Flood

The Great Molasses Flood, also known as the Boston Molasses Disaster,[1][2][3] was a disaster that occurred on January 15, 1919, in the North Endneighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts.

A large storage tank filled with 2.3 million US gal (8,700 m3)[4] of molasses, weighing approximately 13,000 short tons (12,000 t), burst, and the resultant wave of molasses rushed through the streets at an estimated 35 mph (56 km/h), killing 21 and injuring 150.[5] The event entered local folklore and residents claimed for decades afterwards that the area still smelled of molasses on hot summer days.[5][6]

Episode 118: Obscure Horror Movie Remake: The Town that Dreaded Sundown (2014)/'High Ground' review

Episode 118: Obscure Horror Movie Remake: The Town that Dreaded Sundown (2014)/'High Ground' review

Danny is back as Obscure Horror Movie Remake month continues. This week we talk the Blumhouse remake of a 1970s horror movie that is not all that great. But with a cast that includes Gary Cole and a crew that includes Ryan Murphy, the remake must be good. Right?

The Green Knight has been one of our most anticipated movies for quite a while now. The new trailer has only made us more excited. (We have big plans for when the film releases! In the next few weeks we will have more info.) But does the trailer give audiences a little too much?

George A. Romero is a true legend of horror. We talk about the announcement of his "lost" film coming to Shudder. We talk about whether a movie that is almost fifty years ago can hold still hold up.

This week's first film is the first Kangaroo Western on Adventures in Movies! High Ground is a revenge thriller that takes places in 1930s Australia. The film deals with a number of heady themes. We discuss white saviors, character driven narratives, and how to properly use blood.

For Obscure Horror Movie Remake Month we are reviewing the 2014 remake of The Town That Dreaded Sundown. The Blumhouse version is a strange one and we discuss the storytelling decisions, why certain remakes are made, and the worst killer in horror history.

004 ARTICLE READING: Stop Treating Animals as “Invaders” for Simply Trying to Exist by Marina Bolotnikova and Jeff Sebo

004 ARTICLE READING: Stop Treating Animals as “Invaders” for Simply Trying to Exist by Marina Bolotnikova and Jeff Sebo

Earlier this month, officials in Australia announced plans to shoot and kill thousands of camels. What did the camels do to deserve this punishment? They were looking for water to drink, and this search brought them into human communities.

Last year, U.S. federal and state governments spent tens of millions of dollars on plans to “eradicate” bands of feral pigs. What did the pigs do to deserve this punishment? They were looking for food to eat, and this search, once again, brought them into human communities.

This year, Denver is poised to kill more of its Canada goose population, after slaughtering 1,600 geese last year. What are the geese doing to deserve this punishment? They are merely trying to live—Colorado is part of their historic range—and are seen as a nuisance.

These stories are the tip of the iceberg. While the details vary, the general theme is always the same. When human and nonhuman interests appear to conflict, we use violence, often in the form of organized extermination campaigns, to resolve these apparent conflicts in our favor.
