    Biofilms

    Biofilms
Biofilms are collections of organisms working together to survive and thrive within a host environment. An example of this is the plaque that forms on our teeth! Healthy, beneficial, bacteria living within our intestines, organize into a biofilm to support their survival as well as ours. Additionally, biofilms can be formed by pathogenic microorganisms and create both illness and disease. Biofilms are resistant to antibiotics and so effective treatment lies within other forms of therapy. Although present throughout nature, the effect of biofilms was not studied extensively until recently, due to the presenting challenges of culturing the organisms and their ability to change form. Current and continuing research is growing and could potentially hold the key to increased understanding and effective treatment of many forms of chronic illness.
