Land Line Now, Jan. 18, 2024

Land Line Now, Jan. 18, 2024

Federal meetings Thursday, Jan. 18 are tackling topics such as speed limiters, automatic emergency braking, autonomous trucks and lease-purchase plans, among others. Also, a wide variety of ages and experiences make up the OOIDA board. We recently spoke with two younger board members about the importance of being politically active in the trucking industry. And a renewed effort at the Missouri statehouse would tackle the issue of predatory, nonconsensual towing in the state. Meanwhile, competing bills in Indiana would either eliminate or increase the speed differential between cars and trucks.

Land Line Now, Jan. 4, 2023

Land Line Now, Jan. 4, 2023

Two states are acting to significantly increase the number of truck parking spaces within their borders. Wyoming is adding spaces to one location with a history of problems, while Indiana will add spaces to rest areas across that state. We’ll talk with both states’ DOTs to get the details. Also, 2024 is looking to be another big year for new regulations – and many of them do not appear favorable to truck drivers. We’ll get a rundown from OOIDA Director of Federal Affairs Jay Grimes. And it’s a new year, which means fuel tax rates are changing in many states. In a lot of those locations, the changes are automatic.

Land Line Now, Sept. 13, 2023

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg joins the show to talk truck parking from an event in South Dakota dedicated to the issue. Automated trucks take the spotlight during a hearing in the House, and in the absence of a witness representing truck drivers, lawmakers step up to raise some valid concerns and questions. And finally, DAT expects the spot market to pick up a bit as retailers shift from back-to-school season to the holiday season.

Land Line Now, May 12, 2023

Land Line Now, May 12, 2023

Marty Ellis has been talking with drivers about a question: Are trucks getting too automated? Are automated manual transmissions, adaptive cruise control or automatic emergency brakes too much? Also, some carriers are enforcing ever stricter policies on several issues, including personal conveyance, the split sleeper berth provision and inward-facing cameras. And OOIDA’s biannual board meeting recently took place. We’ll hear from one of the members of the board to talk about his career – and his side job running an animal rescue and sanctuary.

    Eliminate
This month we are doing a mini-series inside Amplify Your Team where we are talking about elimination, automation and delegation.

    Today’s focus - ELIMINATE!

Let’s go THERE with elimination and…dare i say, get ruthless?
Before we start though…there are tasks that we just don’t want to do…but that we GET to do for our business because it’s what’s required. I’m not talking about those tasks (because those tasks are where our growth is). And perhaps these tasks can be delegated…but we will talk about that in 2 weeks…
I am talking about a task that we can truly eliminate.

In the first episode, https://everydayinspiringwomen.libsyn.com/amplifyyourvision/find-more-time-in-your-day-and-weekwith-ead-eliminate-automate-delegate I asked for you to make a list over a two week period {or doing a minimum at a 15 minute brain dump} of the tasks you’ve been doing. And part of it was to comb through it and ask “Why am I doing this”?

I am inviting you to get on this level with me here.
Why am I doing this and go through and ask yourself these questions of the tasks is,
    You are unsure WHY…
Were you coached on it but unsure why
Did you think you ‘should’ be doing it.
Because everybody else is doing it.
Is it because you love to do it and it brings you joy?
Do it. Maybe NOT 24/7 but if it’s bringing you joy, keep it on your list and be present to when you’re doing it and how much time it’s actually taking you.

If you decide that ultimately you’re doing it and you’re not sure why it’s really something that you get to consider eliminating from your daily, weekly or monthly task list.

I have been following content creator/Beachbody coach Angie Bellemare for a while now, I love her planners. She created a post the other day talking about not enjoying doing reels. She does tons of video content, but she loves long video content and photos.
What she ultimately said was she’s been pushing to do IG reels, YouTube shorts and tiktoks. Until she finally asked herself why am I doing this? It’s a trend and all of the people say I should be doing it…but she was forcing it, not creating the same results for the time she was putting in and instead decided to go back to what has worked for her in the past.
Now…this is what I am talking about and what I’m aligned to.
If something isn’t creating the results you’re looking for, take a look at it and see if it is a tweak that you get to do or something gets to shift or do you get to stop doing it?
And if you need to give yourself permission to stop doing it.

    THIS IS YOUR PERMISSION SLIP…

    It’s okay. Keep going!

You should definitely have stuff to eliminate from what you’re doing.
Unless you are such a well oiled machine…and well, if that were the case, you wouldn’t be listening to this podcast because I started off the first episode saying if you’re here it’s because you’re likely feeling stressed out, feeling overwhelmed or on the brink of overwhelm.

    So what are you eliminating?

Be mindful - if it’s a task that is creating a result perhaps you look to delegate or automate.

    Otherwise, let’s get RUTHLESS…

Write your list…what are you eliminating?

If you want to send your list to me, I would be happy to take a peek at it. Shoot me an email at Jessica@amplifyyourvision.com I will take a peek and give you some feedback if that’s what you are up for.
    Let’s do it.
Otherwise, post your list on social tag me @amplifyyourvision .

You love your friends and business besties, don’t you? Who else could you challenge to eliminate busy work tasks that they’re doing and don’t need to be? They don’t need to be doing these things in their business because we were told once they should or the trend said they should or they’ve been doing tasks and don’t even know why? Send them the first podcast in this series https://everydayinspiringwomen.libsyn.com/amplifyyourvision/find-more-time-in-your-day-and-weekwith-ead-eliminate-automate-delegate

Let’s get ruthless and round up your friends to get ruthl

Scott Stephenson CEO and Cofounder of Deepgram - Voicebot Podcast Ep 158
Scott Stephenson is cofounder and CEO  of Deepgram. He earned a PhD in particle physics at the University of Michigan with a focus on Machine Learning. He then spent time building a system designed to detect dark matter two miles underground. That experience inadvertently introduced Scott and a colleague to the limitations of speech recognition systems which to their surprise were not using the same deep learning architecture with hardware acceleration they had built to detect dark matter activity. It ultimately led to founding Deepgram in 2015 as a new model for automated speech recognition. The company added 12 million in funding in March of 2020.

Patricia Scanlon CEO of Soapbox Labs - Voicebot Podcast Ep 129

Patricia Scanlon CEO of Soapbox Labs - Voicebot Podcast Ep 129

Patricia Scanlon is CEO and founder of Soapbox Labs, the leader in automated speech recognition for kids.

You may have observed a child attempting to use an Alexa or Google Assistant device and noticed the success rate of those interactions was noticeably lower than when you use it. A big part of that is due to the fact that the speech recognition models in leading voice assistants are tuned toward adult speech patterns, tone, and enunciation. Scanlon points out that children have shorter and thinner vocal cords and have often not learned how to enunciate properly. That means the speech recognition models tuned for adults are looking for the wrong cues when attempting to discern speech from children and the poor results are predictable.

Scanlon began noticing this problem in 2012 and 13 and decided to set out to solve the problem. That has led Soapbox into both the Education Tech and Toys and Games markets. Today we discuss the technology and the applications related to speech recognition for children and even how her company is moving toward developing entirely edge-based solutions with large vocabulary voice recognition that never needs to send data to the cloud. We go deep and wide on this topic that gets too little attention but is likely to shape the experiences of the generation of children born from this point forward.

Scanlon earned her PhD in speech recognition with a focus in signal processing and machine learning at the University College Dublin. She also has an undergraduate degree in electrical and electronics engineering. Before founding Soapbox in 2013, Scanlon worked for seven years as a researcher at Bell Labs of Alcatel Lucent.
