The Amityville Horror: Murder and a Haunting

Welcome to The Oddity Shop, Where the Bizarre is Always on Sale! This week in the Shop, Kara gives the True Facts and history of the Amityville Haunting.

What if you discovered your dream house was actually the setting of one of the most terrifying and notorious hauntings in history? Buckle up as we transport you to 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, where the Lutz family's dream turned into a 28-day living nightmare. We're not just discussing chilling stories of paranormal encounters, we're diving into the controversy and speculation around the Lutz family's experiences.

what about the role of paranormal investigators like the Warrens in this chilling saga? As we ponder the validity of their methods, we also grapple with the unsettling idea that the Lutz's experiences might be linked to the DeFeo family's gruesome end in the very same house. In a whirlwind of possible hoaxes, media frenzy, and chilling accounts, we attempt to separate fact from fiction and uncover the unsettling truths behind the Amityville horror.

    S3 E3 | Experimenting With New Media Models in Web3 w/Daisy Alioto

    S3 E3 | Experimenting With New Media Models in Web3 w/Daisy Alioto

Daisy Alioto is the co-founder of Dirt, a daily(ish) newsletter about entertainment online that uses NFTs for community participation and governance.

With over a decade of experience working in audience development at tech startups and companies like Time Inc, Daisy is well versed in content, editorial, marketing, community building, and more. This background prepped her to see the potential in web3 early on, as she was already familiar with the wide breadth of media structures that have popped up throughout the digital media boom. So when she decided she wanted to start a digital media project of her own, she and co-founder Kyle Chayka brought those traditional building blocks together with NFTs and web3 tech. Dirt was born.

Today, Dirt consists of a newsletter, NFT art editions and a growing community of readers and token-holders. The project is carving out a space for ‘weird but intelligent’ content and giving community members options for how deeply involved they want to be - from occasional consumers to collectors and curators.

During our conversation with Daisy, she walks us through the rapidly changing digital media landscape. She explains the troubles with our reliance on digital ads and platforms, the idea of product-audience fit, and the opportunities in web3 for media to be more community supported. While she is deeply familiar with digital media’s current issues, she is optimistic about its future.

We also discuss being a media-first brand, decentralized content creation, and the role that traditional marketing techniques play in web3. Finally, Daisy gives us her thoughts on where she sees media and social networks heading, and gives us a reason to go back and play Candyland again.
