Preventing sudden unexpected death in infancy

Preventing sudden unexpected death in infancy

Sudden unexpected death in infancy, or SUDI, is the leading category of death after the first month of life, and it usually happens when babies are sleeping. Modification of unsafe sleep environments therefore provides a focus for possible intervention.

One such intervention in Australia and New Zealand, the Pēpi-Pod® Program, is literally saving lives. Professor Jeanine Young of the School at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Young is a registered nurse, midwife, and neonatal nurse who has provided nursing and midwifery care for parents who have lost their children.

Everson: Surviving the First 18 Months of Parenthood

Everson: Surviving the First 18 Months of Parenthood

In this episode of the podcast, I talked with Everson, an experienced father of three, about his strategies for surviving the first 18 months of parenting. We covered various topics such as:

▶︎ Preparation for birth including research and nesting, but the unknowns of childbirth were his biggest fears

▶︎ Challenges with caring for his 3 babies including baby-proofing the house, cleaning and sterilizing everything, maintaining the baby's dietary needs, and the daily care of the baby

▶︎ Emotional and physical challenges of caring for a baby including fragility in the first few weeks and months, dependence on the caregiver, and constant worry about safety

▶︎ Importance of adapting to changes and appreciating the little things that come with caring for a baby

▶︎ Everson's experience with time management and routine when raising his children, including adapting to changes when his children started going to school and managing schedules during the pandemic when they had to do school from home

▶︎ Use of technology to help with time management, such as setting alarms and using smart speakers to play music to wake up his children

▶︎ Discussion of "baby clash" and Everson's acknowledgment of the natural adjustment period any couple faces when welcoming a baby

▶︎ Discussion of different personalities and behaviors of their children, as well as their own experiences growing up and being parents

▶︎ Importance of traditions and maintaining family connections

    4. Commentary - Dog Kills Sleeping Baby

    4. Commentary - Dog Kills Sleeping Baby

When a 2-month old infant was recently killed by the family dog during the night, I felt it was important that we talk candidly about how this could have happened - and more importantly, how it could be avoided. Michelle talks about safe sleep for families with dogs and babies with true compassion, as only a mother can do. While this was avoidable, people don't know what they don't know, and it's up to us to help families learn how to do better so that their babies and dogs are safer and set up to succeed.

    I discuss:

    • safe sleep for dog and baby
    • where dog should sleep when you have a baby
    • how to keep baby safe from dog
    • sleeping parents can not ensure safety if dog is loose in the same space
    • dog bite prevention
    • management tips for parents with dogs

    Thank you for listening!
