School Days: A Conversation with Gunpowder Great Bob Pettebone

School Days: A Conversation with Gunpowder Great Bob Pettebone

You'll have to forgive Steve and me for at times sounding, to use Steve's word, giddy during our conversation with retired Baltimore County teacher and administrator Bob Pettebone.  Except for a brief phone conversation to schedule our interview for this episode, I hadn't had any contact with  Mr. Pettebone since the mid-1970s. Steve has seen him only a couple of times over the same time span. Talking to him after so many years, I had the strange sensation of regressing to my fourth-grade self. And I liked it!  Hearing him describe how at Gunpowder Elementary he came to call me "Lerch" for the way I sat in my chair, especially, in his recollection, when next to a cute girl, led me to two conclusions.  First, the man has a phenomenal memory.  Second, in addition to trying to get to know my cute classmate better, I wonder if I was also trying to copy her homework.

So, again, forgive our occasional giddiness, but few students who were blessed to have Mr. Pettebone as a teacher walked away unchanged for the better.  We hope you enjoy hearing about his illustrious career in education as much as Steve and I did.
