    Getting to Know: Clark! 

    Bassist, Composer and Educator, Clark has toured and performed extensively throughout the world. He has had the privilege of performing with Cedar Walton, Darrell Grant, Brian Blade, Ernie Watts, Bennie Maupin, Von Freeman, Ira Sullivan, Frank Wess, Charles McPherson, Peter Bernstein, Lin Haliday, Dana Hall, Jodie Christian, Bobby Broom, Jeff Parker, Ron Perrillo, Geof Bradfield, Michael Weiss, George Fludas, Kevin Mahogany, Eden Atwood, Ted Sirota’s Rebel Souls, The Mighty Blue Kings and The Chicago Jazz Orchestra among others. 

    Clark completed his undergraduate degree in Jazz Studies and World Music at California Institute of the Arts, where he studied with bass masters Charlie Haden and Darek Oles. While living in Los Angeles, Clark performed with Leo Smith, Vinny Golia, The Charlie Haden Liberation Orchestra, Joe La Barbara and Larry Koonse. He continues to seek expansion of his craft by pursuing his musical studies with masters such as David Grossman of the New York Philharmonic, Mike Longo and Stefon Harris. He recently completed two residencies at the Brubeck Institute in Stockton California. 

    Clark is proud to be at home in the bass chair with vocalist Kurt Elling, with whom he tours the globe bringing jazz to everyone from Istanbul to the Canary Islands. Thus far he has been privileged to play on two GRAMMY nominated recordings with the band, one of which won the GRAMMY for best vocal jazz album in 2009.

On stage he's been in the National Tour of The Play That Goes Wrong, and the Broadway productions of Once: The Musical, and Bandstand. We discuss switching to real estate during the pandemic, how music changed his life as a kid, learning to communicate better through theatre, showing up to an audition after hearing he wouldn't be seen, having imposter syndrome between jobs, wanting to develop new roles, the importance of making connections, the pros and cons of pay-to-play classes, and trying to land reps by buying them tickets to his B'way show.     Ep. 005: Ross Kratter - Freelance Bassist and Composer/Arranger

    Ross Kratter is a bass player, tuba player, and composer based in New York. He is equally at home on string bass and electric bass, both fretted and fretless, 4, 5, and 6 string, as well as on tuba. While primarily known as a jazz musician, he is equally comfortable in any and all styles of music. 

    Ross has performed with such notable and varied artists as Joshua Redman, the Drifters, Bob Franceschini, Victor Wooten, Bob Reynolds, Alex Sipiagin, and many more. He was the bass player on the 2019-2020 First National Tour of Bandstand the Musical, the 2018 national tour of A Charlie Brown Christmas Live, and the 2016-2017 national tour of FAME the Musical. He has also served as a Musical Director for P&O Cruises and Queen’s Room Orchestra Leader for Cunard Line. 

    Kratter released his debut album "It’s Time" with his working quartet in October 2018.
