    Hiatus (end of 2022) announcement

As most of you know, Bold as Brass Podcast was started in the lockdown of 2020 as a way to keep our host, Melissa, busy whilst a lot of her work was on pause.

We've had an incredible 2.5 years since then releasing episodes at least weekly, hosting panels, live interviews, travelling with the show to conferences, and making new contacts and friends worldwide.

The world is rapidly returning to normal and scheduling interviews is getting harder and Melissa's time is fuller and she needs to focus on her work for now.

It's definitely not goodbye forever - we just need a few months off to recalibrate, figure out a way to fit recordings and editing in, and maybe come back on a scaled back release schedule.

Keep up to date on our socials, we're "Bold as Brass Podcast" pretty much everywhere and our website is boldasbrasspodcast.com

Michael Lee: Smooth Baritone Voice Which Wins Country Fans Over

Michael Lee: Smooth Baritone Voice Which Wins Country Fans Over
Michael Lee continues to prove to country music what has been missing all along with his smooth baritone voice. Having shared the stage with big names such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels, Zac Brown, Luke Bryan, Little Big Town, and more, Michael is prepared to win over and move country music fans with his soulful vocals and passion for connecting people through relatable songs and shared experiences.

Born and raised in northwest Georgia, he ventured into his country music career when he was just 14 years old singing gospel songs in church. With a natural ability to perform he became comfortable quite quickly with an on-stage presence. Michael learned to play the guitar at fifteen and continued through high school where he was performing throughout his local communities. It was during this time that Michael really ventured into songwriting and started to find his calling as an artist.

In the early 2000’s, Michael and a pal formed the country music duo Buck and Duke. During the next few years the duo started building momentum in the country music industry and eventually garnered the attention from Grammy award-winning producer Wilbur C. Rimes (father of LeAnn Rimes). Rimes helped the two record a debut album which kicked off Michael’s career as the duo performed at various showcases for major record labels in Nashville, TN. All while sub sequentially writing with prolific songwriter Pat Alger (Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member who has written number 1 hits for Garth Brooks, Dolly Parton, Brenda Lee, Crystal Gayle, etc.) as well as other prominent writers. Michael has also formed relationships and recorded duets with the late Daryle Singletary and the queen of bluegrass Mrs. Rhonda Vincent.

Despite the attention and support from the music industry he was starting to receive, Michael felt a void in his life as many do when it comes to managing life on the road and the responsibilities of being a husband and a father. Missing his wife and children, he was faced with a tough decision and chose to return home to take some time off. “We felt we both had other callings in our lives and went in different directions,” Michael says of the duo’s end. “Although we remain close friends and still write songs together even now.” Not wanting to stop singing completely, he still took some time to record several Christian country projects with Red Hen Records, a division of Daywind Records.

In late 2019, Michael met an individual looking to form a new record label with a vision unlike one he had ever heard of before. The formation of this relationship resulted in the creation of the record label Private Label Artists. Believing in the vision of the newly formed label, Michael secured a record deal with them. Since signing with Private Label Artists, Michael is back to focusing on putting out music for his fans and he’s shooting for the stars.

“My biggest dream and goal is to one day sing on the Grand Ole Opry stage,” Michael confidently says of his aspirations as artist. He started recording a brand-new mainstream country album and is looking forward to continuing to release new music.

With musical influences including the traditional singers like George Jones, Merle Haggard and Keith Whitley, it was the 90’s country that shaped him more than anything with artists including Garth Brooks, Clint Black, Alan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn, and more. “I grew up listening to all types of music, but country was always a forefront for me because my Papaw and great uncles played honkytonks in the 60’s and 70’s.” When he’s not on tour or in the studio laying down vocals for his next project, Michael is spending time with his wife and three kids and watching UGA (Georgia Bulldogs) football. One listen to Michael’s music and you will know that he is representing what real life is all about, the many roads that we all have to choose which way to go and the challenges we all face.

Luca Pisaroni - In conversation with the bass baritone

Luca Pisaroni - In conversation with the bass baritone
The bass baritone Luca Pisaroni is on the top of an international career which started 2001 in the austrian city of Klagenfurt singing one of his now most famous roles - Mozart's Figaro. He has now sung more than 150 performances of that very role and is still not afraid of more to come. Although he was born in the hometown of maestro Giuseppe Verdi himself one will hardly find any Verdi in his otherwise big repertoire. He prefers to present his abilities in Mozart, Händel and even german songs, what really makes him an italian singer being totally non-italian. How the environment you grew up in shapes you, why Mozart is a phenomenal voice teacher and how realizing not being a tenor was one of the biggest disappointments in the life of Luca Pisaroni you will hear in the newest episode of "Parlando - opera talk"

    Episode 4: Lucia Lucas

Mark S Doss – Bass Baritone

Mark S Doss – Bass Baritone

One of Mark’s earliest performing experiences was actually on stage for the Metropolitan Opera in Aida as a supernumerary, or as others might say, an actor, little knowing that he would go on to become a Metropolitan Opera Finalist Winner just a few years later. His first ambition however, was to become a Catholic Priest and despite having begun his training, he pivoted to studying voice at Indiana University. From an apprenticeship at Santa Fe Opera to becoming an ensemble member at Chicago Lyric Opera, singing at The Met and on to performing internationally, Mark’s career took off at an exceptional speed. Now, having performed one hundred roles in over sixty houses worldwide, and won a whole host of awards, Mark shares the twists and turns of his extraordinary career.

    Duncan Rock - Baritone

    Duncan Rock - Baritone

Born in Scotland and brought up on the West Coast of Australia, Duncan was set to become a lawyer, until his interest in music led him to London to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama on a full scholarship, and on to the National Opera Studio.  Finding his early niche as a sailor in Billy Budd at both Glyndebourne and English National Opera, Duncan went on to become a Jerwood Young Artist at Glyndebourne, and later a Harwood Young Artist at ENO. Winner of both the John Christie Award and the Chilcott Award his work now takes him across the world to stages from Glyndebourne to the Metropolitan Opera to the Royal Opera House among many, many others.  Duncan shares his story from the injury that spurred his deeper interest in nutrition and health, leading to his new venture - alongside his singing career - as a nutritionist and exercise professional.

    Lucia Lucas - baritone

    Lucia Lucas - baritone

The American-born, German-based Baritone chose the moment carefully, knowing it could be the end of an operatic career. With an impeccably made-up face and full-length ball gown, and accompanied by a Marlene Dietrich-styled wife, Lucia Lucas attended the company ball where she was an Ensemble member at the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe. This signalled the beginning of her social transition. Lucia has gone on to be the first female transgender Baritone to perform a principal role on an American operatic stage with her Don Giovanni at Tulsa Opera, and her career has continued to go from strength to strength, bringing her to the UK to play Public Opinion in Orpheus in the Underworld at English National Opera and with some incredibly exciting roles and venues to follow in – Covid-depending - the near future.  Lucia is living proof that being trans is not - and should not be - a hindrance to being hired. Don’t miss her extraordinary story.

19Stories: Episode Six George Washington III

19Stories: Episode Six George Washington III

George Washington III is a voice actor with over 17 years of experience after spending 20+ years in the IT industry.  His diverse body of work ranges from radio spots for the Carolina Panthers to national television commercials.

He says his proudest moment was becoming one of the voices of the National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington DC.

Music has also been a big part of his life from childhood and he's used his gift in the opera and classical music worlds, most notably with the use of his beautiful bass-baritone as a regular performer with Opera Carolina, the professional opera company of Charlotte, NC and the oldest continuously operating company in the Southeast.

George joins me, however, to share a different narrative as Covid has personally touched his family with the loss of his own father, George Washington, Jr. after losing his mother just one month prior to cancer.

Listen in as he shares his audio journal of this time and what brings him hope in moving forward.

It's the shortest episode yet as our intrepid podcaster is given some harsh feedback from his Father, Gerry, via electronic letters. Ed reminisces about the pub they used to own in Birr and it's deep dark secret which should be of interest to history buffs. There's also some beard and sex facts and a fun fact about flamingos.

Classical Classroom, Episode 139: Summer Music – Music Academy Of The West! Finding Our Voices With Thomas Hampson

Classical Classroom, Episode 139: Summer Music – Music Academy Of The West! Finding Our Voices With Thomas Hampson

In our second annual Classical Classroom Summer Music Festival Series, we hit the (sound)waves at the Music Academy of the West in sunny Santa Barbara, California!

Library of Congress “Living Legend” and Grammy Award-winning baritone Thomas Hampson has reached a point in his life and career at which one might use the term “venerable” to describe him. “Wise” is another word that music journalists probably throw down when talking about him. And they would not be wrong. But even Thomas Hampson got his start somewhere. In this interview, he talks about his classical music beginnings at the Music Academy of the West, and about conveying the grand meaning of music as a teacher to young people in master classes there now.

Music in this episode (all performed by Thomas Hampson):

    • Three Songs Op. 10: No. 1, Rain Has Fallen by Samuel Barber
    • Sechs Lieder aus “Lotosblatter,” Op. 19, 6 Mein Herz ist stumm, mein Herz ist kalt by Richard Strauss
    • Vier Lieder, Op. 27: 3. Heimliche Aufforderung by Richard Strauss.

Audio production by Todd “Toddsong” Hulslander with editing by Mark DiClaudio and lipsyncing by Dacia Clay. Thanks to the Music Academy of the West for their help with these interviews, especially to Emma Levine and Kate Oberjat, who’s quite frankly, done a lot.
