Picturesque Engineering: Telford's Highland Roads and Bridges

Picturesque Engineering: Telford's Highland Roads and Bridges

In partnership with the Fulbright Commission.

In 1819, Thomas Telford and Robert Southey went on a six-week tour of the Scottish Highlands to inspect the region’s newly built roads, bridges and canals. What compelled this unlikely duo, the “Colossus of Roads” and Britain’s Poet Laureate, to undertake one of the greatest road trips of the Picturesque era?

Landscape historian and Fulbright scholar Paul Daniel Marriott explores the legacy of their extraordinary journey, meticulously chronicled by Southey, on travel, transport and design in the twenty-first century.

A lecture by Paul Daniel Marriott recorded on 14 March 2023 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.

Gospel of John #4: John 1:35–51 Jesus Calls the First Disciples, etc.

Gospel of John #4: John 1:35–51 Jesus Calls the First Disciples, etc.
Two men who are with John the Baptist hear John point out the Lamb of God as Jesus walks by. One of these two men is Andrew, while the other is not named (could it have been John the Gospel writer?). They spend time with Jesus and acknowledge that this Jesus is the promised Messiah. Andrew then finds his brother Peter and tells him about Jesus. Then Jesus calls Philip to be His disciple who then testifies to Nathanael (this is likely Bartholomew of the Synoptic Gospels) and tells him he has found the Messiah.

Episode 18: Putting Passion Ahead of Fear with Canopy Pilot, Jeannie Bartholomew

Episode 18: Putting Passion Ahead of Fear with Canopy Pilot, Jeannie Bartholomew

Jeannie Bartholomew is a professional canopy pilot who (along with her husband, Curt Bartholomew) has put everything she has into the sport of skydiving. She is a member of Team Alter Ego Fastrax, travels the globe to teach canopy piloting skills and compete in events, and holds multiple records: National women’s records: longest distance (127.25 m), fastest speed (2.386 seconds in 2017), fastest speed (2.411 seconds in 2016). North American women’s records: fastest speed, longest distance. State women’s records: Tennessee longest distance and fastest speed, Florida fastest speed, North Carolina fastest speed

With over 9,000 jumps to her credit her goal is to become the world’s best in her sport but first she claims she needs to beat her husband, who is currently ranked #1 in the world.

In this interview that Jeannie was kind enough to allow a few of my student to sit in on, we discuss the importance of routines, visualization, physical endurance, preparation and the attention to detail for maintaining success and safety in this high risk sport. Jeannie’s passion for life and sport can be summed up in this statement: “Your character is defined by how you treat someone who can do nothing for you.”

Mike Hawthorne is a fantastic visual artist who came to writing later in life with his book The Hungry Horizon.  It's historical fiction about the pirate Bartholomew Sharpe who sailed with Henry Morgan before going his own way.

Born in Manchester in 1954, well traveled and self taught, Mike Hawthorne has made his reputation in London since 1975 with exhibitions of rock, reggae, and jazz visuals, underground comix and work acquired by the Museum of London and Lembeth Archives.

The first nine years of his life were spent in Nigeria and Sierra Leone. His early influences were MAD magazines, illustrations of the American Civil War and television newsreels of Biafra and Vietnam. His paintings also draw on European medieval traditions of depicting heaven and hell. Since 1975 Hawthorne has worked in London, creating rock, reggae and jazz visuals and underground 'comix'.

    In this episode:

    • Who was Bartholomew Sharpe?
    • Growing up in Nigeria and Sierra Leone
    • The status of book 2 and some insight into the publishing industry
