    Apr 18 St Peters Basilica

Today we look at the laying of the cornerstone of St Peters Basilica in 1526. It would become the biggest church in the world and its style would influence many others that were built.  We explore the difference between a basilica and a cathedral. We look at the claim that it was built over the tomb of the apostle Peter, and the history of pilgrimage there.  We also explore how it was funded, and how that could have sparked the Reformation.

    Have You Heard - Basilica

    Have You Heard - Basilica

Basilica is a 4 piece “hair-slam” band out of Boone, North Carolina.  The term “hair-slam” hails from the draw of the earlier days of hair metal but with an updated twist.  They like to blend multiple flavors of metal to help create their sound.

The band had their self-titled album “Basilica” ready to go in the early days of 2020 but had to press pause on the release due to COVID.  They all took the time during COVID to keep their chops up and were able to work on their reach outside of the mountain range of the Appalachia Mountains.  The podcast featured “Grinding Teeth” on the “Does It Stank” segment and after hearing the track, decided to set up a chat to learn more.

Being a North Carolina boy himself, Ryan wanted to know how the music scene is fairing in the Carolinas.  The guys go in detail about how they go about spreading their sound throughout the surrounding areas.  They also discuss their signing to Innerstrength Records.

With everyone being in school for music related studies, the guys go around the room and talk about their side projects.  Everything from country to R&B to Emo to math rock.  They all studied at the Hays School of Music at Appalachia State and essentially have all the bases covered with it comes to DIY.

Todays featured track is “Grinding Teeth” of the self-titled album.

Episode 25 - Beauty is in the Eye of the Basilica

Episode 25 - Beauty is in the Eye of the Basilica

Modern church buildings. They leave a little lacking compared to the buildings of yore. Where's the architecture, art, reverence... it seems these things have been lost through the spread of various denominations over the course of hundreds of years. Is it necessary? Wasteful? Gaudy? Marvelous? We discuss this and more as we jump into our first "by request" topic written in from listener Norm!
