Katonya Breaux graces Hello Beauty to talk all sun protection, especially for melanin-rich skin. She is the mother to musician Frank Ocean, a meditator, who is wellness-focused, and the founder of Unsun Cosmetics.

Katonya grew up with the belief that black people did not need sun protection. She learned from a dermatologist that the moles that she would see from the older women from her family were not genetic, but the direct result of sun damage. Shocked by this, she started her journey in searching for a safe sunblock that did not leave a white cast on her skin. Since the market was lacking sunscreens that were inclusive with her skin tone, and one that was free of chemical actives, Katonya created Unsun Cosmetics.

Unsun Cosmetics is a natural skincare brand focusing in sun protection and beauty products for all skin shades and tones. It is clean and safe for the user and the environment.

In this episode, she clarifies that a higher SPF number does not mean a great higher amount of protection. The gap between an SPF 30 and SPF 50 are so small that using an SPF 30 is perfectly okay. To illustrate, SPF 30 gives 97% protection and SPF 50 gives 98% protection.

Isabelle Du is a bilingual SAG-AFTRA actress, former Miss Vietnam USA 2017, was part of CBS Amazing Race Season 25, Syfy's Face Off Season 9-13, and Lifetime's American Beauty Star Season 1-2. I asked her what it's like to get COVID-19. Isabelle shares her experience on contracting a "mild" case of COVID-19. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the worse, she mentioned that her experience was a 3. This episode is based on Isabelle's experience and recounts what she went through. This episode is not meant to be used as a medical advice.

We discuss the stigma associated with COVID-19 and the solutions we can do to avoid this. We talked about how we need to reframe our language, know our facts, correct misconceptions, offer support, and many more.
