Hello, I’m Gail Nobles on the Cat Bear. Today’s topic is Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb. I love hearing them sing together.

    Theme: Together
    Barbra Barry Singing Together

I’m thinking of the song “Guilty” a vocal duet between Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb. The song was written by all three Bee Gees. Barry, Robin, & Maurice Gibb. The song was released as a single from Streisand’s 1980 album of the same name.

“And we’ve got nothing To be guilty of, our love We’ll climb any mountain Near or far, we are And we’ll never let it end We are devotion
Pulse is racing, darling How grand we are .."

Guilty" peaked at No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 5 on the adult contemporary chart. In the UK, the song reached No. 34 on the UK Singles Chart. The single was certified gold by the RIAA. In addition, "Guilty" won a Grammy Award in the category Best Pop Vocal Performance, Duo or Group.

    Radio Boy

    Radio Boy

There's a tale radio people tell about why they got into radio. Does it apply to me? Well...

    --------

A story I’ve heard about people in radio is that many of them share a similar childhood experience: They tried to get their parent’s attention but their parents shushed them – told them to be quiet – they’re trying to listen to the man on the radio. The children begin to think that whatever is coming through the radio speaker is more important than what they want to say and later, those children begin a career in radio to get their parents to listen to them.

Is it true? I don’t know. Regardless, when I heard the story, I had to assess if that’s the reason I’ve begun these commentaries and the business talk show I have on other stations across Alabama.

My earliest memories of the radio are as a young boy of about ten. My father would wake me early in the morning on Saturdays in the winter and we’d drive north out of Mobile for a hunting club in the small dirt-road town of Suggsville, Alabama deep in Clarke County. We left well before daylight and I lie across the bench seat in the old yellow Jeep Cherokee in my hunting clothes with my head on my father’s leg trying to get back to sleep while he drove. This was long before using seatbelts was a thing. The radio dial was the only light in the car, and it shined in my eyes while the radio played country music. I remember hearing the piano in Crystal Gayle’s song “Don’t It May My Brown Eyes Blue” and thinking, “Wow. I really like that” and I still really like it to this day.

After that the memories jumble. I remember the Top 40 radio stations of the late seventies and eighties and one time as a pre-teen calling a station over and over again to request a song. When the DJ finally answered and I told him I wanted to hear - “Emotions” by the Bee Gees  and I’m shocked that I can remember that – and he said “Well…It’s playing right now.” I had become so focused on dialing and redialing I stopped noticing what was playing. Alone in my bedroom, my face burned bright red in embarrassment and hoped that DJ couldn’t ever figure out who I was.

And I remember hearing Paul Harvey. There are over 3000 episodes of his The Rest of the Story. 3000! He did six per week, all about four minutes long. You can find his catalog online. Today when I listen, I hear that remarkable voice, that remarkable control in his delivery. His word choice, his inflections, his tone, his variations in speed to perfectly sculpt the story he was telling. Today I recognize those as the tools of his craft. Back then though, I just listened. Probably impatiently. Sitting in the car with my father or my mother in a parking lot somewhere in the middle of running an errand.

“Mom” or “Dad”, I very likely said. “Can we get out now? Can we go?” “No,” they said. “Not until this is over.”

    And, here I am.

I’m Cam Marston and I’m just trying to Keep It Real. Oh, and welcome to my new listeners with public radio station KXCR in Florence, Oregon. I’m happy you’re along for the ride.

    Maurice Gibb

    Maurice Gibb

The Bee Gees had a string of hits in the 60s and 70s. Maurice Gibb was one of the members of the brother group, the Bee Gees, one of the most successful pop groups of all-time.   Maurice’s career started at the age of six in a skiffle rock and roll group named the “Rattlesnakes,” which later became the Bee Gees. His early musical influences included the Beatles, Everly Brothers, the Mills Brothers and Paul Anka. Maurice was the fraternal twin of Robin Gibb. On Dec. 28 1957, the brothers were invited to perform at a local movie theater. They planned to sing along to a 78 rpm record, but they dropped and broke the record so they had to sing live. They sang “Wake Up Little Susie” by the Everly Brothers. The audience thought they were great and they were on their way to stardom.

THE CARL ARRINGTON ARCHIVE Episode 2 BARRY GIBB 1978

Episode 2 of THE CARL ARRINGTON ARCHIVE features an excerpt from Carl's interview with Barry Gibb, recorded in July of 1978.

The Bee Gees were happy to be burning up the charts with the success of “Saturday Night Fever.”  It was a hectic time in 1978 when Carl interviewed Barry Gibb at his home in Miami as the brothers were churning out a fresh studio album (what came to be “Spirits Having Flown”), a new movie, and preparing for a mega world tour.
    What could go wrong?

Barry Gibb talks about success, the frantic work of the Bee Gees to ride the fame wave of the iconic disco film and soundtrack, coping with work and family, and much more.  Both Maurice Gibb and Barry’s wife Linda were present during these interviews.

With a voice that touches somewhere deep inside, Alyssa’s soulful sound and powerful lyrics will send you jet-setting into a broad range of human emotions. Growing up on the open roads of America, with her RCA country recording artists parents, Baillie & The Boys, made it impossible for Alyssa not to witness the power and magic of music. At just 3 weeks old, her cradle was the gentle rocking of a tour bus. Her play ground encompassed sound checks at fairs and festivals and back stage dressing rooms at a slew of different venues including the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Award shows, and her “extended family” consisted of managers, promoters, roadies, musicians and other fellow mainstream country artists...

Most of us know who the Bee Gees are. They are every essence of what disco is - but they are also so much more than just disco.

Their music spans decades, with a journey through multiple different music genres. They are so much more than just disco. Which had me wondering.... Why? Why do the Bee Gees rock so much? Why do so many people only think of disco when they think of the Bee Gees music? And what makes them so infectious to the people who love them most?

This episode I set out to find some answers.

    #64 RIP Joey Jordison

    #64 RIP Joey Jordison
The Bee Gees - 4:12:21, 2.00 PM
    Keyboard music by: Gail Nobles

Today I’m thinking of the Bee Gees. When they were singing songs like Staying Alive, More Than A Woman; Jive Talk.

Paw Prints of the Cat Bear. The Red Panda’s diverse sound. Today’s topic .. The Bee Gees

The Bee Gees were a music group formed in 1958. Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. They were a trio and were especially successful as a popular music act in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The group had three-part tight harmonies; Robin had a vibrato. Barry was the R&B falsetto which became their signature sound during the mid-to-late 1970s and 80s. The Bee Gees wrote all of their own hits, as well as writing and producing several major hits for other artists. They sold over 120 million records worldwide (with estimates as high as over 220 million) making them among the best selling music artists of all time.

I love the Bee Gees. You might think of their hit Staying Alive while walking I’m sure after seeing the movie Saturday Night Fever starring John Travolta. It was a great 1977 dance musical film.

I love all of the Bee Gees’ songs
    How Deep is Your Love
    Tragedy
    You Should Be Dancing
    Too Much Heaven
    And there were many more.

The Bee Gees is a musical singing group you just can’t forget in music. I’m Gail Nobles. Thanks for tuning in. I hope you’ll tune in again next time.
