    The Noble Bereans

    The Noble Bereans

Paul continues his 2nd Missionary Journey by visiting the cities of Thessalonica and Berea. Several people began to follow Jesus in Thessalonica, but others were jealous and caused trouble. Paul went on to Berea where the people received the message of Jesus with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures daily to see if what Paul said was true. Troublemakers from Thessalonica soon followed and caused so much trouble that the Christians escorted Paul to Athens for his own safety.d

We should follow the example of the Bereans and study Scripture to understand what is true.

Bible verses used in this episode:

    Acts 17:1-15

    2 Timothy 2:15

    Outline:

    1. Paul and Silas preach in Thessalonica (Acts 17:1-4)
    2. Jealous Jews retaliate (Acts 17:5-9)
    3. Paul teaches in Berea (Acts 17:10-15)

    Tips for teaching children:

    • Help the children learn how to use their Bibles.  Talk about it being a collection of 66 books gathered into one book.  Look at the table of contents together.
    • Teach them how to look up a Scripture reference (book, chapter, verse). Practice looking up verses using that same format.  Simple verses for the beginning Bible reader might be Genesis 1:1 and John 3:16.

    Tips for teaching adults:

    • Questions to ask the class: 1) Why would Paul go to the synagogue first to preach about Jesus?  Who would be his audience? 2) What could they have been preaching about Jesus for the Thessalonians to understand them as claiming Jesus is a rival king to Caesar?  3) How serious is this charge about Jesus?
    • As a teacher, it is good to develop your skills in studying the Scripture.  Here are some tips to keep in mind when reading, studying and preparing for your class: 1) Read the text in its context.  Don’t just pick out one or two verses out of their context.  Things make sense when put into their context.  Read the passage and then re-read it, thinking about how the text flows and how the parts of the text connect.  Try to get into the habit of reading paragraphs instead of single verses.  Context is everything.

The Four Soils - The Gospels

The Four Soils - The Gospels

In this Bible Story, Jesus speaks about the four soils. He tells of what happens to many different hearts when they come in contact with the word of God. This story is inspired by Mark 4:1-32 Matthew 13:1-23, 31-32. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is Mark 4:32 from the King James Version.

Episode 187: As Jesus was teaching crowds on the shores of Galilee, He began to tell a parable about a farmer sowing seeds. The farmer sowed his seed into four different types of soil, yet only one yielded a crop. Not everyone in the crowd understood His meaning, however, and even His own disciples needed Him to explain this to them. But in the end, we find that this timeless parable is a tale about our own hearts in response to God’s Word.

Acts 17-18:18 | Journeying with Paul: Spreading the Gospel to Thessalonica, Berea, Athens, Corinth and Beyond

Acts 17-18:18 | Journeying with Paul: Spreading the Gospel to Thessalonica, Berea, Athens, Corinth and Beyond

Are you ready to journey through the narratives of Acts 17 and 18, uncovering the teachings of Paul as he spreads the Gospel across cities? You're in for a treat! We'll explore the lessons we can learn from Paul's encounters with both receptive and resistant audiences, highlighting the importance of faith and the challenging of traditions. The story of the Bereans, who diligently studied God's word, serves as a compelling model for us to emulate in our quest for understanding.

We'll also accompany Paul on his travels through Thessalonica, Berea, Athens, and Corinth, discussing the purpose of the church and the message he brought to these cities. We'll delve into how he used the culture of Athens to preach about Jesus, and the significance of repentance and judgment. We'll draw parallels between the persecution of Jesus and Paul, providing context for our upcoming readings of Thessalonians and Corinthians. Plus, we'll shed light on the events in Corinth, from the conversion of Christmas, the synagogue ruler, to the intriguing vision Paul receives from the Lord, and the subsequent accusations by the Jews. Get ready for an eye-opening exploration!

Acts 17 portrays Paul's missionary journey to Thessalonica, Berea, and Athens. In Thessalonica, Paul preaches in the synagogue, causing both Jews and Gentiles to convert. However, opposition arises, leading Paul and Silas to Berea. The Bereans, known for their open-mindedness, examine the Scriptures daily to verify Paul's teachings. Despite this, troublemakers from Thessalonica disrupt their work, and Paul leaves for Athens. In Athens, Paul engages the intellectuals at the Areopagus (Mars Hill), using the altar to the "unknown god" to proclaim the Gospel, introducing the Athenians to the one true God. Though some mock, others become believers.

Acts 18 begins with Paul's arrival in Corinth, where he meets Aquila and Priscilla, tentmakers like himself. Paul reasons in the synagogue weekly, and many Corinthians embrace Christianity. God encourages Paul in a vision, assuring him of safety despite opposition. Jewish adversaries bring him before Gallio, the proconsul, who dismisses the case. Paul continues his ministry for a year and a half in Corinth, facing opposition but protected by God. Later, Priscilla and Aquila accompany Paul to Ephesus, where he briefly teaches before departing for Caesarea.

The Unknown God - The Book of Acts

The Unknown God - The Book of Acts

In this Bible Story, we are able to read the letters written by Paul to the church in Thessalonica. Paul encourages them to continue in their pursuit of a quiet and peaceful life that honors God. This story is inspired by Acts 17. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is Acts 17:23 from the King James Version.

Episode 233: Paul, Silas, and Timothy were teaching at a synagogue in Thessalonica. Crowds from all over gathered there to hear what they had to say and many came to a saving faith in Jesus. Yet some of the Jews were angered by this change and hired a mob to find Paul and kill him. When the mob couldn’t find Paul they brought out Jason instead and had him beaten. Meanwhile, the rest of the believers encouraged Paul, Silas, and Timothy to flee to Berea. There was peace for Silas and Timothy there, but Paul moved on to Athens where he would reason with God-fearing Greeks and be brought before the Areopagus.

    Episode 107: Acts Chapter 17

    Episode 107: Acts Chapter 17
In Acts 17, we find the familiar pattern, Paul and Silas enter a town, preach the good news of Jesus, people respond, others resist and they move on to another town. This pattern repeats three times in this chapter. What strikes me most about this pattern is that in spite of the resistance and pain that it causes, Paul and Silas keep moving and the church keeps spreading. That challenges me to keep sharing with others the good news of Jesus and keep moving with His guidance. What do you think?

    Feeding Our Communities

The spread of COVID-19 and the insufficient response to it, has made it much more difficult to access safe and healthy food, especially for those most vulnerable among us. Feeding Our Communities features Harry MacCormack from Sunbow Farm in Benton County, Oregon and Martina LeForce with Berea Kids Eat in Madison County, Kentucky. Both Harry and Martina have worked to fill gaps in access to food whether it be through making free meals for children or supporting organic food producers through a host of different methods. If you are interested in connecting with rural Oregonians to work on organizing for food access in this pandemic moment and beyond, head to www.rop.org to learn more about Rural Organizing Project (ROP) and how you can get involved.

A Tale of Three Cities (Acts 17)

A Tale of Three Cities (Acts 17)
It's a sermon about cities, and a sermon about seeds, but really it's a sermon about people's reactions to the Good News of Jesus Christ. It's also about trashing the neighbouring town of Barrhead. It's just a joke though, Barrhead. We love you, Barrhead, like Paul loves Thessalonica and Berea. We love you like Athens loves its idols and idle chatter. We love you like Angie loves giggling churchmice.

Men Who Turned the World Upside Down (Acts in Action - 40)

Men Who Turned the World Upside Down (Acts in Action - 40)
When Paul and his companions were in Thessalonica and proclaimed Jesus as the Messiah, some were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, but others were jealous; so they formed a mob and started a riot in the city, accusing the believers of defying Caesar’s decrees. They went to search for Paul and Silas but they did not find them. Paul had managed to escape and went on to Berea, but “when the Jews in Thessalonica learned that Paul was preaching the word of God at Berea, some of them went there too, agitating the crowds and stirring them up. The message upset a few and challenged what they thought they knew—this message turned their world upside down and they were not happy! Have you ever been in a place when what you thought you knew was challenged? Acts 17:1-17
