    Bessel van der Kolk – How Trauma Lodges in the Body, Revisited

    When Krista interviewed the psychiatrist and trauma specialist Bessel van der Kolk for the first time, his book The Body Keeps the Score was about to be published. She described him then as “an innovator in treating the effects of overwhelming experiences on people and society.” She catches up with him in 2021 — as we are living through one vast overwhelming experience after the other. And The Body Keeps the Score is now one of the most widely read books in the pandemic world. His perspective is utterly unique and very practically helpful — on what’s been happening in our bodies and our brains, and how that relationship can become severed and restored.

    Bessel van der Kolk is the founder and medical director of the Trauma Research Foundation in Brookline, Massachusetts. He’s also a professor of psychiatry at Boston University Medical School. His books include Traumatic Stress: The Effects of Overwhelming Experience on the Mind, Body, and Society and The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma.

    Krista interviewed the psychiatrist and trauma specialist Bessel van der Kolk for the first time in 2013, as his book The Body Keeps the Score was about to be published. He is an innovator in treating the effects of overwhelming experiences. We call this “trauma” when we encounter it in life and news, and we tend to leap to address it by talking. But Bessel van der Kolk knows how some experiences imprint themselves beyond where language can reach. He explores state-of-the-art therapeutic treatments — including body work like yoga and eye movement therapy — and shares what he and others are learning on this edge of humanity about the complexity of memory, our need for others, and how our brains take care of our bodies.

    Bessel van der Kolk is the founder and medical director of the Trauma Research Foundation in Brookline, Massachusetts. He’s also a professor of psychiatry at Boston University Medical School. His books include Traumatic Stress: The Effects of Overwhelming Experience on the Mind, Body, and Society and The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma.

    Living with the strong urge to avoid loving and calm the community, I realized there was more work to do to uncover this default. As I continue my work on self awareness, I'm discovering in Bessel van der Kolk, "The Body Keeps the Score," alarming insights. Drawn towards understanding conflict, I also discovered this story that created a peace within me to understand the way things could be; the Village Of Calm. There's a connection to creating the awareness in our body and mind to how we are being and its effect on others. We have to be the first to put it forward in order to receive it. When it doesn't come back, then it’s up to us to create a calm place for others. When it does, it's a beautiful connection.

    How to Heal from Racial Trauma with Resmaa Menakem

    Show host Ryan Nell interviews New York Times bestselling author, thinker and therapist, Resmaa Menakem, who wants to help us heal from racial trauma. Brilliant, furious and powerfully raw, Resmaa is on a mission to cure and then inoculate us against the virus of "white-body supremacy". His prescription is a living, embodied, anti-racist philosophy called Somatic Abolitionism — "a way of being in the world... a return to the age-old wisdom of human bodies respecting, honouring, and resonating with other human bodies".

    In this heartfelt, funny and provocative conversation, we discuss what's happening in Minneapolis, the harm of "feral policing", and the recent tragic killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor. Resmaa talks about the collective grief that has ensued. The danger of ignorance, white silence, and the problem with white people saying "I didn't know". The whole problem of setting up the white body as the supreme standard (and by inference the black body as the deviant). The unlikelihood of overcoming white-body supremacy through intellect alone. The necessity of embodied work, getting uncomfortable with each other, and "doing the reps" to create a post-racist culture. 

    We discuss the idea that trauma could get passed down at first epigenetically, and later, decontextualised, as culture. And that this also happened to the European settlers of America, that they were fleeing violent, powerful people, and that this "fleeing energy", wasn't properly dealt with, but was instead played out on the colonists treatment of the black and indigenous people. We talk about the origins of the idea of race, the 400 to 500 year weight of the concept and its effects, and the naivety of many white people when it comes to race. 

    We talk about the relatively clean pain of the California wildfires (versus the dirty pain of avoiding discomfort when it comes to our relationship with race). We talk about the need for putting ourselves in areas so uncomfortable that the only way through is growth. We talk about the things in us that seem defective, actually being protective. We talk about the challenges of living on a US military base in Kandahar with open sewers, and how they illustrate the need we have to "embrace the suck". How we can best do this in groups. How when you're trying to contemplate how your life might look inside this huge marble block, thinking won't work, you need to get to the business of carving.

    Most of all though, Resmaa's message shines through, that the necessarily hard work will take us to a better place.

    For most of us, falling in love with the absolute wonder of being alive is a distant dream.  Nonetheless, changing how we feel is the goal of most self-help courses, a great deal of therapy and most of the routes that lead to alcohol and drug abuse.
    Suppose we could do it intelligently, with a generosity-of-spirit that allows us really to fall in love with the act of living.  So that each moment of life becomes a wonder, however it is lived?
    In this final podcast of series 1, we take a look at this ultimate sticking point in our society. For many of us, feeling just isn’t safe and feeling good is either self-indulgence or self delusion.  Or at least, that’s what we’ve programmed ourselves to believe.

    But imagine a world where everyone was in love with living every moment of the day. Where we knew as a felt sense, that life was inspiring, and there to be explored. Where the magic of the days touched every interaction with ourselves, other people and the world around us.

    None of this is impossible. Childhood trauma notwithstanding, we do have the ability to choose how we feel, moment by moment, hour by hour, day by day. I can open to the things that make my heart grow – or I can recycle the things that make it shrink. (With the coda that for some of us, our history of trauma is too great and we are hijacked by the impact of that on our bodies – therapy is a key resource and one to be used if at all possible.)

    For most of us, though, we let our default feelings define the tenor and thread and weave of our lives. And we don’t have to. In fact, we need not to do this for any longer than we can help.

    In this podcast, we explore the ways we can shift out of our defaults to something that lets us flourish. Because the world needs nothing less from us now.
