Renegade Review: Feud: Bette vs. Joan

Renegade Review: Feud: Bette vs. Joan
Welcome Renegade Nation it’s me Naughty Nicole and it’s time for another Renegade Review. And this time around, we’re looking at Ryan Murphy’s new, deliciously campy and oh-so-riveting series Feud. Now much like the anthology that is American Horror Story, each season focuses on one story and the series strings together on a familiar theme – bitter real-lift rifts and historic feuds. And the first season is off to a raving start focusing on the most notorious cat fight in Hollywood history. This inaugural season takes us down the rabbit hole that was the war between the original Screen Queens, Bette David and Joan Crawford. I admit I was so excited when this show was originally announced, it gave me more goosebumps then when I found out they were remaking Godzilla vs. King Kong.

“Feuds are never about hate — feuds are about pain. They’re about pain.” With those foreboding words, softly cooed to camera by Olivia de Havilland portrayed by Catherine Zeta Jones — a contemporary of both Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, in the midst of an interview about the two stars — and we’re off on the sordid tale about one of the most epic feuds in Hollywood…

As many of you know, I’m a huge fan of old Hollywood, and Bette Davis is one of my favorite actresses of all time, so you can imagine I was front and center for this ingenious new show. For those of you that don’t know the feud that was Davis vs. Crawford, you’ll need to know this: their feud was incredibly delicious and so very publicly played out so much so that the subject was ripe for this brilliant dramedy; add in brilliant portrayals by Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange – Bette and Joan respectively – well it set the bar pretty high before they were even out of the gates. In truth, either this would have been an incredible failure or something so delightfully decadent that it would soothe the souls of us purists. Lucky for us… it’s the latter, and I don’t make that statement lightly. So let’s jump right into it.

    Classics - All About Eve

    Classics - All About Eve

The end of January has ushered in the latest batch of Oscar nominees. Hence our episode of Classics this month focuses on one of the most nominated films of all time: 1950s All About Eve. This film weaves a familiar cat-and-mouse story of jealousy and ambition but offers one of the best scripts ever written for the screen and contains career-defining performances from Bette Davis and Oscar-winner for this film George Sanders. Needless to say, there is much to discuss here!

FF 27: What Ever Happened to Baby Jane

FF 27: What Ever Happened to Baby Jane

We've reached the final entry in our first Bette Davis series (first of many if Lady P has anything to say about it). Our previous 'All About Bette' episodes covered Davis' turns in All About Eve (1950) and The Little Foxes (1941). Rounding out this glorious trifecta is the sister act that would come to define the latter, post-Studio System, half of Bette's career: What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962).

Largely due to the infamous feud between the film's two larger than life stars, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, Baby Jane is now primarily remembered as a campy novelty film. We at Flixwise are certainly no strangers to the art of playful exaggeration (See our Johnny Guitar episode). However, in the case of Baby Jane, we want to make sure that film's reputation as drag queen fodder, hasn't overshadowed the abject terror and sadness at the heart of the story. We also want to highlight the film's great formal achievements. Director/referee Robert Aldrich does a masterful job creating a sense of claustrophobia and dread, while also guiding two of Hollywood's biggest leading ladies through performances that would, for better or for worse, cement their respective personas for future generations.

For our previous 'All About Bette' entries Kristen Sales and Anne Marie Kelly gave pitches for why their favorite Davis film should be included in the Flixwise canon. Now it's Lady P's turn to convince skeptics, Kristen and Anne Marie that this perennial horror classic is worthy of the Flixwise Favorite's list. Will she succeed? Pull up a chair and give it listen to find out.

    FF 26: The Little Foxes

    FF 26: The Little Foxes

We have officially made it through the Top 50 of the Sight and Sound Greatest Films of All Time list! Let's all pat ourselveson the back and celebrate a job partially done. In all seriousness, this a proud moment for our show and we're excited to mark the occasion. Let us continue our commemoration of getting a 5th of the way through this seemingly endless list by raising a glass to one of Hollywood's most enduring and tenacious screen icons, Bette Davis.

Today's show is the second in our three-part Bette Davis marathon: All About Bette. In our first entry, we discussed Davis's career-defining turn in Joseph Mankiewicz's All About Eve (1950). This time we're tackling a less-widely seen Davis film, the 1941 adaptation of  Lillian Hellman's play,The Little Foxes (1941).  Lady P is joined once again by Kristen Sales and Anne Marie Kelly to talk about why The Little Foxes deserves greater recognition among Bette's filmography.

Talking points include Davis's relationship with the film's director, William Wyler, and the deep-focus cinematography courtesy of Director of Photography, Gregg Toland (which inevitably leads to comparisons with Citizen Kane). They also attempt to put the film in historical context and talk about why 1940s Hollywood was so into making turn-of-the-century family dramas (see also Meet Me in St. Louis and The Magnificent Ambersons). Finally, they decide whether or not The Little Foxes is worthy of the Flixwise Favorites list.

    FF 25: All About Eve

    FF 25: All About Eve

Ladies and gentleman, Flixwise has officially completed its review of the Top 50 Sight and Sound's Greatest Films of All Time. It's been a long time coming and we can think of no better way to mark the occasion than by having a Bette Davis podcast marathon... because every occasion should be cause to celebrate the fiercest queen in Hollywood history.

Curiously, there weren't any Bette Davis movies on the Top 50 list. And curiouser still, there doesn't appear to be any Davis in the remaining 200. Fortunately, the Flixwise gang is here to correct this egregious error.

On today's show, we're kicking of our 'All About Bette' series with the film that many consider the pinnacle of her acting career: All About Eve (1950). Flixwise regular, Kristen Sales, tells listeners why she thinks All About Eve is one of the greatest films of all time. She'll have to convince host, Lady P, and fellow regular, Anne Marie Kelly, that Joseph Mankiewicz's celebration of "the theataar" and all of its backstage bickering is worthy of the Flixwise Favorites List.

Expect heaps of praise for Davis, George Sanders, Anne Baxter, and Thelma Ritter. Plus, an explanation for that weird scene with Eve and her "roommate".

Monika Henreid discusses Paul Henreid Documentary

Monika Henreid discusses Paul Henreid Documentary
Monika Henreid has a life long history in the entertainment business. A child of Hollywood royalty. Monika Henreid has worn the hat of an actress, radio host, writer, producer and director. She has been in movies with greats like Bette Davis. Now Monika Henreid is producing a documentary about her father, actor Paul Henreid. Henreid Beyond Laszlo. http://henreidbeyondlaszlo.com/ Paul Henreid (born Paul Georg Julius Freiherr von Hernried Ritter von Wasel-Waldingau) was an Austrian-born American actor and film director. Most fans will remember Paul Henreid as the brooding Composer Robert Schumann in Song of Love. Good friend and comrade German teacher, Max Staefel in Goodby Mr. Chips or the tortured husband in a bad marriage in Now Voyager. Perhaps fans remember him as the patriot Victor Laszlo in Casablanca. In fact he was non and all of these characters and so much more. Born into a family with prestige, he would rub elbows with Austria's elite. After his fathers death he learned to deal with hard times. Not having the educational advantages to become a doctor he turned all his passion to acting. He was black listed three times. He became collateral damage of the McCarthy witch hunts. For five years he would not be able to act in the medium he had given so much too. He married the love of his life. A story that reads like a romance novel. He reinvented himself time and again. He never lost his dignity, devotion or strength. Of course for every hero there is a heroine. Lisl would be the cement which held the family together during difficult times. Henreid Beyond Laszlo is scheduled to be released in 2017. It is still in the production stage. Funds are needed to finish the documentary. Hocus Pocus

It's almost Halloween. You know what that means, right? Because, I didn't. Apparently, it means that millennials like to watch Hocus Pocus. That's right - to some people, apparently Halloween is synonymous with a Bette Middler movie. Is it any good, or do some of us have irrational childhood memories? Joins us as we rewatch Hocus Pocus.
