Understanding the Microsoft Outage: Why Were Azure, Microsoft Teams, & Outlook Down? | Outage Deep Dive

At around 7:05 a.m. UTC on January 25, 2023, Microsoft started experiencing service related issues. At the same time, ThousandEyes observed BGP withdrawals and a significant number of route changes that resulted in a high amount of packet loss, ultimately affecting various services like Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and others.

00:00 Welcome: This is The Internet Report, where we uncover what’s working and what’s breaking on the Internet—and why. Join our co-hosts Angelique Medina, Head of Internet Intelligence, and Kemal Santja, Principal Internet Architect, both from ThousandEyes, as they discuss the January 25, 2023 Microsoft outage.

10:18 Why would rapid announcement changes cause packet loss at the scale that was observed during this event?

12:35 What should someone make of the length / duration of the event?

14:28 Why would the change of an IP address on a router cause such a major connectivity disruption?

    SHOW NOTES:

Topic 1 - Welcome to the show. Tell us a little bit about your background, and where you focus at Juniper?

Topic 2 - There’s lots of talk about Hybrid Cloud and Multi-Cloud, but it’s often in the context of Kubernetes or an application running in multiple places. Let’s talk about how we interconnect clouds.

Topic 3 - How should we think about the networking interconnections between end-users, the service providers, and the public cloud providers?

Topic 4 - Help us understand the similarities and differences between the orchestration of workloads (e.g. containers and Kubernetes) and orchestration of networks (e.g. SDN, Contrail, etc.). Who needs to know about each system?

Topic 5 - How does this all evolve as things like Kubernetes, KubeVirt (VMs) extend out to the edge?

Topic 6 - What are some of the newer use-cases or application-types that are starting to push the need for new cloud networking technologies?

    108: Deez Network Servers

Well, this was one heck of a week. On Monday, Facebook experienced a historic outage of its infrastructure that impacted services used by billions of people. On Tuesday, a new Windows came out. On Wednesday, Twitch disclosed one of the largest data breaches in years, maybe ever. We were duty-bound to talk through our view on all these momentous events, and some of the things we've learned along the way, and that's exactly what we did.

If you'd like to jump to any of the individual topics this week, the timecodes are:

Collaboration App Networks Have Particularly Bad Week, Rostelecom BGP Bungle (Again) (Week of March 30-April 5, 2020) | Outage Deep Dive
It was yet another eventful week on the Internet, folks. In this week’s episode of The Internet Report, Archana and I discuss the latest figures around global Internet performance, noting that, despite an elevation in outages last month, the Internet is holding up well. ISP outages declined slightly in the U.S. and globally last week, but that wasn’t the case for UCaaS providers, who had a particularly rough time last week, especially in the United States. There was also a fairly large BGP route hijack on April 1 courtesy of Russian ISP, Rostelecom — the same ISP responsible for a route hijacking incident back in 2017. The prefixes involved belonged to Amazon, Cloudflare, and other services, and impacted the reachability of sites like Yelp.com.

Show 106: OpenBGPD with Claudio Jeker

Everyone is talking about FRRouting suite these days, while hidden somewhere in the background OpenBGPD has been making continuous progress for years. Interestingly, OpenBGPD project was started for the same reason FRR was forked - developers were unhappy with Zebra or Quagga routing suite and decided to fix it.

We discussed the history of OpenBGPD, its current deployments and future plans with Claudio Jeker, one of the main OpenBGPD developers, in Episode 106 of Software Gone Wild.
