Robby Angle – Discipleship and Authentic Community

Robby Angle – Discipleship and Authentic Community
We can’t be loved if we’re not known, but vulnerability in discipleship and community can be intimidating. Robby Angle is the CEO of TrueFace, a ministry committed to helping others experience authentic relationships. He reminds us that grace is foundational to our experience of Christ’s love and our path of discipleship as Jesus' followers. God revealed to him that his striving was in the way of experiencing true grace while he was on the mission field in Pakistan. Before this revelation, he thought that being a Christian meant sinning less, doing better, and reading more of the Bible. However, he found that instead, all we are called to do as Christians is receive God’s gift of grace. Robby and Les discuss how we can truly let go and be fully known and why authentic community is vital for believers. He challenges listeners to tell God their fears about vulnerability and authenticity and to have the courage to build genuine and vulnerable relationships with one trusted person. Accepting and appreciating grace takes time, but we are not called to do life alone.

God's Kingdom, Leadership and the Pursuit of Excellence in Faith

God's Kingdom, Leadership and the Pursuit of Excellence in Faith

259: Pastor Plek, Pastor Mo, Catie Sas, and Machine Gun Nick are on the podcast today to recap Sunday’s sermon on Exodus 18. They talk about the Israel-Hamas conflict, what makes a good leader, and resolving conflict within the church.

Faith, Culture, and everything in between.

    Scripture References:
    Exodus 18

    Questions:
Mo did a great sermon.  So the folks that attacked Israel were descendants of Ismael, which was also fathered by Abraham by God's instructions to Sarah.  So why would God allow them to attack & kill one another to the point where one lineage is totally wiped out?  The history of wars and no neighborly love seeming to exist anywhere or anytime in the world seems pretty depressing
Why do we keep falling back to "we aren't perfect and will sin" instead of turning it around and actually trying to live our lives more like Jesus?   It just sounds like that's a crutch to justify our sinful behavior.

How to Lead with Peace, Humility, Compassion, and Faith / Christian Faith & Democratic Leadership / Evan Mawarire

How to Lead with Peace, Humility, Compassion, and Faith / Christian Faith & Democratic Leadership / Evan Mawarire

Activist, Pastor, and Global Leader Evan Mawarire reflects on the role of Christian faith in democratic leadership, specifically looking at three significant Gospel passages that reveal not just Jesus’s approach to leadership, but how he teaches his disciples to lead with peace, humility, compassion, and faith.

In Mark 4, we find Jesus leading from peace, rest, control, and trust, peacefully sleeping in the midst of a storm, while the disciples prematurely conclude: “Don’t you care that we are going to die?” In Mark 10, when two of the disciples play political games for their own glory, Jesus responds with a teaching of humility and a subversive glory—that the greatest will in fact be the servant of all. And in John 13, Jesus displays this humility and compassion by washing the gross and grungy feet of his friends, and teaching Peter that a leader is first a student, and the student isn’t greater than their teacher.

Other boats were with him. 37 A great gale arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’ 39 He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. 40 He said to them, ‘Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?’ 41 And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, ‘Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?’

Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?’ 39 They replied, ‘We are able.’ Then Jesus said to them, ‘The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.’ 41 When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. 42 So Jesus called them and said to them, ‘You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 43 But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.’

And during supper 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, 4 got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered, “You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” 8 Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you.” 11 For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, “Not all of you are clean.” 12 After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are right, for that is what I am. 14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. 16 Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. 17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

Joshua 22-24 | We Will Serve the Lord

Joshua 22-24 | We Will Serve the Lord

The Book of Joshua contains three main sections: conquest (1-12), division (13-22), and Joshua's farewell speeches (23-24). Chapters 22-24 form the final section of the book and focus on Joshua's farewell speeches to the Israelites.

In chapter 22, Joshua sends home the two and a half tribes of Israel who had settled on the east side of the Jordan River. He reminds them to remain faithful to God and to keep His commandments. He also instructs them to build an altar as a reminder of their unity with the rest of Israel and their devotion to God. However, when the other tribes hear about the altar, they assume that the eastern tribes have rebelled against God and plan to attack them. After a tense confrontation, it is revealed that the altar was not meant for sacrifices, but rather as a symbol of their unity with the other tribes.

In chapter 23, Joshua gives his farewell address to the leaders of Israel, reminding them to stay faithful to God and to avoid worshiping other gods. He warns them that if they do not obey God's commandments, they will face punishment and be driven out of the land that God has given them.

In chapter 24, Joshua gathers all the tribes of Israel at Shechem to renew their covenant with God. He recounts the history of Israel from Abraham to their conquest of the land of Canaan, emphasizing how God had been with them every step of the way. He then challenges them to choose whether they will serve God or the gods of their ancestors. The people pledge their allegiance to God, and Joshua sets up a stone as a witness to their covenant.

Overall, these chapters in Joshua emphasize the importance of remaining faithful to God, unity among the tribes of Israel, and the need to remember God's faithfulness throughout history.

Joshua 19-21 | All Came to Pass

Joshua 19-21 | All Came to Pass

Joshua 19-21 is a section of the Bible that describes the allocation of land to the remaining tribes of Israel. The chapter begins with the allotment of land to the tribe of Simeon within the territory of Judah. It then goes on to describe the allotment of land to the tribes of Zebulun, Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and Dan. Each tribe receives a specific portion of land, with the size of the allocation varying depending on the size of the tribe. The chapter also includes a description of the cities within each tribe's allotment, as well as the Levitical cities that were set aside for the tribe of Levi. Overall, the chapter outlines the distribution of land among the tribes of Israel following their conquest of Canaan.

The allocation of land to the tribes of Israel is part of God's fulfillment of his promise to give the Israelites the land of Canaan as an inheritance. This promise was first made to Abraham in the book of Genesis, and it was reiterated to Moses and the Israelites as they prepared to enter Canaan. Throughout the book of Joshua, we see God keeping his promise by granting the Israelites victory in battle and enabling them to conquer the land.

The final verses of Joshua 21 emphasize God's faithfulness to his promises. The chapter describes how the Israelites took possession of the land and settled in the cities that had been designated for them. The passage ends by stating that "Not one of all the Lord's good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled". This statement serves as a testament to God's faithfulness and his commitment to keep his promises to his people. It also highlights the importance of trusting in God and relying on him to fulfill his promises in our own lives.
