    Left Behind? (Audio)

    Left Behind? (Audio)

Do not be shaken: Jesus is in control. Evil will be defeated and destroyed. Easily. The victory is secure. Followers of Jesus are to find our security in God, not in the stability of the world. If our confidence is in anything other than God’s truth, then we will be shaken and disturbed.

Remember, there will always be evil in the world. Things might look worse before they get better, but that doesn’t mean we need to live in rapture anxiety about every single moment of every single day. When things get bad, we don’t have to be shaken—we rest on this truth: when Jesus returns all evil and oppression and death and sin will come to an end. All sad things will come untrue. Jesus will establish his kingdom in full and everything will be made right. Hold fast and remain faithful.

    #133 | Preaching Hurt

    #133 | Preaching Hurt

Welcome to The On Preaching Podcast, the podcast dedicated to helping you preach faithfully, clearly, and better.

It has been said that you should preach to broken hearts, as there is one in every pew. But what do you do when the broken heart is in the pulpit?

There are times when the preach goes to the pulpit with great joy. He cannot wait to stand to preach. He can barely stand as he preaches. He feels he will float away as the Holy Spirit holds him up in the pulpit.

Those good times in pulpit ministry won't last forever. There will be times when the preacher must drag himself to the pulpit with a troubled mind, a weary spirit, and a broken heart. If you remain in ministry long enought, you will have to preach your way through personal, family, and even church hurts.

How do you preach when you are hurting?

    1. Be honest with yourself.
    2. Pray without ceasing.
    3. Talk to someone you trust.
    4. Preach consecutive messages.
    5. Preach the gospel to yourself.
    6. Don't use the pulpit to vent.
    7. Take a break from preaching.

#132 | My Complicated Relationship With Sermon Manuscripts

Welcome to The On Preaching Podcast, the podcast dedicated to helping you preach faithfully, clearly, and better.

In this episode, I want to talk to you about my complicated relationship with sermon manuscripts. At this point, I am a conflicted manuscript preacher. I write a full sermon manuscript each week. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, I have taken the manuscript to the pulpit. On one hand, I feel like preaching from a sermon manuscript is helping my preaching. At the same time, there are ways In which I feel the manuscript hinders my preaching.

What is my current view of preaching from sermon manuscripts?

    1. Biblical Accuracy
    2. Message Clarity
    3. Balanced Preaching
    4. Sermon Length
    5. Pulpit Liberty
    6. Sermon Archives
    7. Ministerial Development

#131 | The Ministry of Application

#131 | The Ministry of Application

This is The On Preaching Podcast, the podcast dedicated to helping you preach faithfully, clearly, and better.

In this episode, H.B. talks about the ministry of application. A biblical sermon should consist of explanation, illustration, and application.

We are prone to skip over application, or do it wrong. It is critical that preachers take application seriously and work to do it effectively.

How can I practice the ministry of application effectively?

    1. Apply the text.
    2. Pray for wisdom.
    3. Know your audience.
    4. Make pastoral applications.
    5. Ask probinh questions.
    6. Craft your application.
    7. Illustrate for application.
    8. Address different categories.
    9. Apply throughout the sermon.
    10. Trust the Holy Spirit.

    #128 | On Pulpit Ethics

    128 | On Pulpit Ethics

Welcome to The On Preaching Podcast, the podcast dedicated to helping you preach faithfully, clearly, and better.

    Whatever happened to pulpit ethics?

Pulpit ethics are pulpit manners which include dos and don'ts for those who stand in corporate worship to preach God's word. Unfortunately, we no longer have pulpits. We now have stages. We no longer have ethics. We not have platforms. But pulpit ethics still matter.

What are the basics of pulpit ethics?

    1. Physical Posture
    2. Appropriate Attire
    3. Reverent Spech
    4. Nonverbal Communication
    5. Personal Distraction
    6. Worship Participation
    7. Spiritual Sensitivity

BOOK RECOMMENDATION: "Expositional Preaching" by David Helm

"Expository preaching is empowered preachign that rightfully submits the shape and emphasis of the sermon to the shape and emphasis of the biblical text. In that way, it brings out of the text what the Holy Spirit put there... and does not put into the text what the preacher things might be there." - David Helm

The Gospel in Post-Christian Culture (Video)

The Gospel in Post-Christian Culture (Video)

In the post-Christian vision for our world and our culture, progress replaces God’s presence as the engine of history. The story of post-Christian culture is a story which says that as the world moves away from faith and belief in God that the world will inevitably become a better place. However, according to the theology of the New Testament, we find ourselves firmly in the era about which Jesus proclaimed, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me—disciple all nations—I am with you ALWAYS—even to the end of the age. Jesus is king. Jesus is on the throne. Even in our post-Christian age, Jesus has not been dethroned from his position at God’s right hand. God has not given up on his project of redemption and salvation!

Do you believe that God has created you, made you for this cultural moment? That he has placed you in this time in history, this specific context, so that you can share the good news with your neighbors and loved ones and a culture in desperate need of some good news?

    Sermon References:

    • “There is no going back. We will most likely live the entirety of our lives in an increasingly diverse, contested, globalized, and divided world. This world will also be a fragile one. Thus such a moment will be served by a church that is relevant by being resilient. With change and chaos as the norm, a nostalgic desire to return to golden days is deeply tempting. But instead of wanting to return to the past, we must learn from the past.” Pastor Mark Sayers
    • “Religion declined not because it was refuted, but because it became irrelevant, dull, oppressive. When religion speaks only in the name of authority rather than with the voice of compassion—it’s message become meaningless." Abraham Joshua Herschel
