039 – There are no benchwarmers on the Vail (AZ) School Mountain Bike Team. (Scott Wraith w/ Shelby & Riley)

039 – There are no benchwarmers on the Vail (AZ) School Mountain Bike Team. (Scott Wraith w/ Shelby & Riley)

In this episode, we hear from Scott Wraith (aka Scotty Van Halen), coach of the Vail Composite Mountain Bike Team, and his daughters/team riders, Shelby and Riley. They discuss the team's history, its mission, and the benefits of participating in competitive mountain biking.

The Vail Composite Mountain Bike Team, a member of the Arizona Cycling Association (ACA), was started 10 years ago by Ben “Bubbles” Chandler with one student and has since grown to include over 50 middle school thru high school age riders from the Vail, AZ area. Demonstrating a culture of inclusivity, Vail Composite welcomes boys and girls of all skill levels with a focus on personal goals and teaching community and social responsibility. The program is successful largely because of the total group effort consisting of many parents and volunteers. The Team’s Booster Club recently applied for their 501(c)(3) to help subsidize race fees where needed.

Scott also shares information about a philanthropic program called El Tour Bikes for Change, which has partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs Tucson, Serve Our City and other non-profit entities to deliver new bicycles, helmets, locks and lights to underserved youth.  In 2022, they distributed 560 bikes to disadvantaged kids. They hope to more than double that this year . . . with your help. Click on the link in the show notes for details on how to donate.

Overall, the Vail Composite Mountain Bike Team is a great example of how two-wheeled sports can promote fitness, teamwork, and personal growth. This episode provides valuable insights into what it takes to be successful in competitive mountain biking and highlights the positive impact that this sport can have on young people and their families.

038 - Providing transformative experiences. The Arizona Trail. ~800 miles from Mexico to Utah. (Matt Nelson)

This week the MCP is joined by guest host Mike Mucker and features special guest Matt Nelson, Executive Director of the Arizona Trail Association (ATA). The ATA is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect, maintain, enhance, promote and sustain the Arizona Trail as a unique encounter with the natural environment.

The Arizona Trial is 1 of 11 officially designated ‘National Scenic Trails’ in the US.  It spans ~800 miles, South to North, across Arizona, from Mexico to Utah.  The trail is supported by 100’s of ambassadors and stewards, 1000’s of volunteers, and 10’s of 1000’s of users each year.  It is a multi-use trail frequented by mountain bikers, hikers, and equestrians.  It offers, hands down, some of the most spectacular mountain biking in the Southwest United States and should, without a doubt, be on your bucket list to ride. Matt is an amazing leader, advocate and human.  We like him.  You will as well.

029 - GRO Girl GRO empowers & enables 4th-8th grade girls thru bikes and more! (Jody Bartz)

Jody Bartz, PhD, dedicated endurance athlete with over a decade of experience as a competitive cyclist, recently started a program called GRO Girl GRO which stands for “Gathering and Recreating Outdoors, Girl(s) learn how to Give back, be Responsible, and take Ownership.” In the podcast, she discusses the mission of the program to create a space for girls in 4th – 8th grade to give back to the community, demonstrate responsibility, and take ownership by gathering and recreating outdoors. She explains that this will be accomplished thru activities like mountain biking, hiking, trail running, trail advocacy and stewardship, along with active reflection.

Overall, Dr. Bartz’s message is one of empowerment and positivity thru a concept she describes as Making, Creating, and Taking Space. She believes that by creating positive outdoor exercise experiences, providing girls with the tools and support they need to build healthy habits, and fostering a sense of community and connection, we can help young girls develop the confidence and resilience they need to thrive both on and off the trails. 026 - Cowboys ride mountain bikes and build trails too! (Neil Stitzer)

This week the boys are joined by Neil “Cowboy” Stitzer, the current Trails Program Coordinator for Pima County, Arizona.  Cowboy helps to manage the design, build, and maintenance of 150 miles of amazing trails throughout Southwest Arizona.  He is an accomplished mountain biker himself and has a wealth of knowledge about all things trails-related.  During the episode he walks us through how trails are conceived, funded, land-acquired, designed, ground truthed, cleared for biological & cultural assessments, built, and maintained.  Early in the podcast he highlights a few of the new machines he uses to build trails (the Sweco 480 Trail Dozer and John Deere 17g Mini-Excavator).  Bonus - at the end of this podcast - the boys read a script written by OpenAI’s ChapGPT engine about “why all mountain bikers should donate either time &/or money to trails advocacy”.  Come on down to listen and learn from Cowboy AND get a little glimpse at our future as AI becomes a bigger part of our lives.
