    The Great Geoengineering Debate

    The Great Geoengineering Debate
This week Matt Sauers is back and we're looking we're looking at the shiny new technological idea that could turn back the clock on climate change...or it could fundamentally alter the atmosphere setting in motion a series of events that renders the planet unlivable. So let's ask the question, is it better to invest in solar engineering? Or would we be better served to put that time and effort into finding more sustainable types of energy. Plus we're also talking about some polluted pollinators that are covered in dinosaur juice exhaust. Your Hosts James Reed (https://twitter.com/James_Reed3) Steffi Diem (https://twitter.com/SteffiDiem) Jason Organ (https://twitter.com/OrganJM) Our Guest Eagle eared listeners will remember Matt from our Gen Con episode with Indiana Sciences, where he wowed the crowd by bringing science to the world of dungeons and dragons. In his spare time, he works as an engineer and mentor to the future of STEM. Gaslighting

    Gaslighting

In this episode, Ralph and Luc delve into what the oil companies knew about CO2’s impact on the climate, and how they lied to you to sustain their fossilized business model – even if it risks drilling us into oblivion… This argument will soon be heard in court as part of a series of lawsuits against Big Oil.

We start by looking into the history of scholarship on this issue, dating back to the 19th Century.
We highlight the record of what the oil companies such as Exxon and the American Petroleum Institute were saying behind closed doors – and contrast this with their contemporaneous public statements.

Description: Many people have never heard of the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC – but for 50 years, the group has been the driving force behind some of the most extreme policies in this country. Behind closed doors, ALEC brings corporate lobbyists and state politicians together to draft and vote on model bills that aim to free corporations from regulations, regardless of the impacts on people and the planet. Labor law, environmental law, health and safety, voting — no cause is off-limits. Our guests say ALEC and its wealthy pool of funders are a real threat, but there are ways to take action and progress has already been made. In 2023, a diverse coalition of groups, including Greenpeace, Color of Change, the Center for Media and Democracy and more, is calling out the anti-democratic impact of ALEC by using the hashtag #50YearsOfHarm. Congressman Ro Khanna of California's 17th Congressional District, a leading progressive in the House, and Lisa Graves, Executive Director of True North Research and President of the Center for Media and Democracy, two of the preeminent national watchdog groups investigating dark money, join Laura Flanders to unpack it all. And in her closing commentary Laura fills us in on the other side of the story in state houses: the Democrats' have their own project in place these days. But is it any match for ALEC?

“ALEC recognizes that on many of these issues, there's a 70, 80, 90% consensus against them and they're trying to distort the democratic process by the use of big money.” - Ro Khanna

“ I still believe that for many people, not all people, knowledge is power, facts matter, and knowing who the real special interests are behind this [legislation] can help expose and block them.” - Lisa Graves

    Guests:

Lisa Graves: President of the Board, Center for Media & Democracy; Executive Director, True North Research

Ro Khanna: Congressman California's 17th District

    Climate Defiance with Rylee Haught

Fossil fuel profiteers don’t deserve a moment of peace. The youth-led group Climate Defiance is using direct action to expose the politicians most responsible for the climate crisis and compel them to act with the urgency this crisis deserves.

I spoke with Rylee Haught – the group’s student recruitment lead – just a day after Climate Defiance shut down Joe Manchin’s keynote address in protest of the Senator’s role in greenlighting the Mountain Valley Pipeline. We talk about Manchin’s fossil fuel interests, the success of this action, and the other incredible actions the group has organized, including their successful blockade at the White House Correspondents Dinner.

    We also discuss:

Senator Joe Manchin’s profiteering off of fossil fuels

            Disruption as a strategy

Disruption vs working within the normal channels

How to shut down a board meeting or other event

Sit ins, blockades, and other tactics

Save the Earth? (ft. George Carlin)

In this episode, Ralph and Luc listen to a stand-up routine by comedian George Carlin about environmentalists. We engage with Carlin’s pontifications and his ingenious framing by providing context from a scientific perspective. We also gesture at disarming some of his cynicism while steering clear of fully explaining away what made his take comedic in the first place.

This episode contains 4 brief excerpts from George Carlin's "Jammin' in New York" special.

Erratum: we said microplastics were found in the blood of 99% of people tested – in fact, plastic was found in the blood of 17 of 22 subjects tested (77%).

    Episode 69

    Episode 69

The noise from oil trolls, oil bots and Big Oil astroturfing has become deafening. Their aim is to overwhelm the climate movement - and thoroughly confuse the public - by posting vast amounts of misleading information and spreading crazy conspiracy theories as well as general nonsense, in very large volumes. They are a naked attempt at pushing Big Oil's agenda of perpetuating fossil fuels irrespective of the very high risk they pose to society's very survival. The Angry Clean Energy on what they are; what to do about them in an environment where Big Oil's obscene 2022 "profits" will likely power them into hysteria mode; and how this is consistent with Big Oil recently dropping any pretense about their goal of stalling - and then reversing - the energy transition.

Climate Quickie: Why fossil fuels were a dirty word at COP

86% of everything trapped in our atmosphere comes from three things: oil, gas, and coal AKA fossil fuels, so why has the phrase been strangely invisible in global climate negotiation and climate policy? Here to explain is Tzeporah Berman, the chair of the Fossil Fuel Non-proliferation Treaty Initiative.

How a database is speeding up fossil fuel’s extinction
A ‘list to rule all lists’ is helping citizens and organisations hold polluters, governments and greenwashers accountable, says Carbon Tracker’s executive director Rob Schuwerk on TEDxLondon’s Climate Curious. Episode 130 - Discovering True Riches at Harvard Business School with John Cortines

John Cortines had a plan to become a millionaire by age 30 and retire by age 40. He had all the spreadsheets and the “Big Oil” job to prove it. But while pursuing his MBA at Harvard Business School, John took the class “God and Money,” where he ended up writing a term paper that became a book—and it changed his life forever. He began studying God’s Word to answer the question “How much do we need to give?” John ended his exploration with the question flipped to “How much do we really need to keep?” In this Faith Driven Entrepreneur Podcast episode, we talk to John about the book that he co-authored, entitled, ‘God and Money: How We Discovered True Riches at Harvard Business School.’ Listen in as John shares practical tools for how Christ-following business leaders can give biblically and responsibly.
