    Indigo Sparke (Singer Songwriter)

Happy New Year and welcome back to Roadcase! We are absolutely delighted to talk to Indigo Sparke for this first show of 2023 and the start of a new season of spectacular guests.  Indigo, who hails from Sydney, Australia and now calls upstate NY home, joins us shortly after the release of her latest album, Hysteria -- a stunning and emotionally compelling work filled with glorious soundscapes and brutally honest lyrics. This outstanding new work is produced by Aaron Dessner of The National, whose recent work on Taylor Swift's album, Folklore, earned him a Grammy for Album of the Year. Indigo's development as an artist reveals a deep current of passion and emotional depth, and we talk about the steps she has taken to get to this exciting point in her life: a pivotal moment filled with challenges, opportunities, and the therapeutic exercise of putting it all out there, on stage and off. So hop on the Roadcase bus for this exciting first episode of the New Year.  2023 is gonna be a great ride, so hang on tight!!

    Intana

    Intana

Narrative Led with So Textual Founder & Creative Director Jennie Edgar

Narrative Led with So Textual Founder & Creative Director Jennie Edgar

This week I spoke with Jennie Edgar, who has led (as she says) many lives, from starting a pie business to working as a freelance editorial and art director. Since 2018, Jennie has been writing and designing for thoughtful brands to refine their editorial voice and aesthetic expression.

Additionally, she’s a visual artist and the founder of So Textual, a platform that promotes community around reading, so we talk about her style of reading and how that varies from her husband’s and mine, and how the way we read, as well as what we read, is unique to each of us.

We also cover effect theory, book culture, and literary artists we love like Eve Babitz, Adrianne Lenker, her grandma, and Nora Ephron. She talks about looking at one’s life like a project and answers a question from our mutual friend Maddie on what it means to be a narrative-led person. I loved this wide-ranging conversation and am eager to hear what you think of it and how you read.

Ep 22 - Big Thief - Dragon, New Warm Mountain ...

Ep 22 - Big Thief - Dragon, New Warm Mountain ...

Last month we shared our thoughts on Small World by Metronomy, all 9 tracks and 35 minutes worth. This month This Is Not Happening ups the ante with 'Dragon, New Mountain ...', all 20 tracks and 80 minutes worth.  In part 1, we deep dive into the density of Big Thief and Part 2 we play 'Spin It or Bin It?' where we judge the tracks that we've chosen for this month's theme.

Part 1 - Album of the Month

This month it's David's choice, 'Dragon...' by Big Thief. Three of us love Big Thief and have more than a passing relationship with the band ... whilst one of us is a Big Thief virgin. There was SO much written about this album as soon as it came out including a number of 100% reviews.  As always, we take a slower, more considered approach to criticism, living with this album for a couple of months and letting it really settle in before we reflect and share our views.

    You don't have to look to far to find interviews, reviews and videos on Big Thief and this album but some of the content that we consumed and discussed in part 1 can be found below;

    • The Metacritic review page is always a goo start and can be found here
    • This is a great listen - 'Out On The Line' Podcast
    • Really insightful take on the album - 'Taking it Down' Podcast
    • If you love them ... or not, this one's got you covered - 'NY Times' Podcast
    • A great article in Vulture - read it here

Part 2 - 'Spin it' or 'Bin it?'

In the second part of this episode we get stuck into 4 tracks representing this months theme - 'Not on Spotify'. We all pick a track,  introduce our track and ask the others the painfully binary critical question; 'spin it' or 'bin it?'

This month was a little more 'free form' than usual ... but an amusing listen none the less!

    1. Guy's track selection is - Prassay - Krvsin
    2. David's track selection is - Nick Drake - I Was Made to Love Magic
    3. Nolan's track selection is - Pharoahe Monch - F You
    4. Joey's track selection is - Joanna Newsome  - '81

    Next Month

Episode #23 will be with you soon - Joey will be leading the discussion on 'Life on Earth' by Hurray for the Riff Raff. If you get the chance we'd love you to have a listen and perhaps share some thoughts with us on the blog or on our Insta. This album's getting a lot of positive attention and we think it's going to be in a few year end lists.

If that's not enough for you then there's 10 years worth of music discussion on the blog at www.thisisnothappening.net, which runs alongside the podcast choices and much, much more. Brightness Crumb with Grace Park & Jesse Dalton of The Deer 🍊

Brightness Crumb with Grace Park & Jesse Dalton of The Deer 🍊

This week I spoke with Grace Park and Jesse Dalton, two members of the Austin-based band The Deer. If you listened to my recent episode with Buck Meek (of Big Thief), he recommended his fellow Texan musicians The Deer to be featured on the podcast, and I'm so glad he did. Their songs are spacious, with airy vocals and gentle percussion, and it’s a sound that compels comparisons to Fleetwood Mac, Neko Case or Mazzy Star. In this conversation, Jesse and Grace tell me about the beginning of the band, being back on the road after quarantine, their new album, and their process. We talk about trial and error, acceptance, friendship, grief, and much more.

This week's episode is the next installment in the series called HappyThankYouMorePlease, where we have guests talk about three things: something they're happy about, something they're craving more of, and something they are grateful for. This week I spoke with herbalist and author Erin Lovell Verinder (who you know from episode 297) and her husband Noah Checkle about their want for space, the movie Sister Act 2, persimmons, their home (which is an old church), friendship, and so much more. They are my dear friends and I hope you like this episode as much as we liked recording it.
