    66. MEET ME AT THE BILTMORE: Dutee Wilcox Flint

This week, I’m joined by Amanda Quay Blount, who just released her new book Meet Me at the Biltmore this October. She brought me a story I’d never heard before about this Rhode Island based Ford dealer. His name was Dutee Wilcox Flint, and he was one of the earliest and most successful Ford dealers in the world before he lost his empire, moved into the Biltmore, and largely vanished from memory.

Searching For Hope And Beauty In Greece With Acclaimed Author Peter Fiennes

Searching For Hope And Beauty In Greece With Acclaimed Author Peter Fiennes

Is there hope for the future?  In his latest book, A Thing of Beauty: Travels in Mythical and Modern Greece, Peter Fiennes travels to the sites of famous Greek myths on the trail of hope, beauty and a new way of seeing what we have done to our world. Peter explores what the ancient Greeks have to say to us today and why it's the people who give us hope.

Peter walks through stunning and spoiled landscapes on the trail of dancing activists and Arcadian shepherds, consults the Oracle and loses himself in the cities, remote villages and ruins of this storied land. Find out if the ancient Greeks actually had anything to say to us about our climate crisis and our other ecological concerns. From Greek mythology to Greek food and all the way to picturesque beaches of the Greek islands, Peter draws on dreams and moments of hope that he encountered during the first year of Covid.

If you're not able to visit Greece right now, you can visit a little bit of paradise in the North Carolina Mountains. Although every season is perfect to visit the Biltmore Estate, Leeann Donnelly, Senior Public Relations Manager for Biltmore, shares why the holiday season is Biltmore’s most popular.

And with the holidays right around the corner, the Asheville Regional Airport is ready to make visitors feel right at home. Tina Kinsey fills us in on how to best navigate traveling this holiday season.

    Episode #20: Old South Florida

    Episode #20: Old South Florida

Road trip, anyone?  Jennifer's in Florida again, but this time she's nowhere near the Magic Kingdom.   With Miami as home base, she's gassed up the rental car and set the GPS to a place (South Florida) and a decade (the 1920s) where she explores a beautiful old mansion and garden, a historic and spectacular swimming pool, and a glamorous prohibition-era hotel.  Oh, and the highlight: Jennifer visits a crazy tourist attraction from the 1920s that she has dreamed of for decades.  Does reality live up to the dream?  (Spoiler alert:  Yes!).   She also does some hard-hitting investigative work to determine why Miami drivers honk their horns... A LOT.   It could be their way of saying hello... or it could be their way of alerting other drivers that Jennifer is on the road again and a danger to herself and others.  Either way, we'll get to the bottom of it.  Finally, we learn about Charleston (the song) and The Charleston (the dance).  We are visiting the '20s, after all.  And speaking of flappers (were we speaking of flappers?) Jennifer puts all the Circa Sunday Night listeners to sleep with the latest addition to the Vintage Century Reading Room.   Tonight's episode is a virtual vacation, so pack your bags and hop a plane.  We'll meet you in Miami!

    Wigwam Arizona

    Wigwam Arizona
In this episode of the Not So Native Podcast we sit down with the Social Media and Marketing Manager of the beautiful 4-Star Wigwam Resort, Sarah Boyd. The Wigwam’s luxurious history in Litchfield Park starts shortly after Arizona’s joining of the lower 48, before many of the valleys other well known luxury resorts like the Phoenician and Biltmore, and decades before Phoenix became the sprawling metropolis it is today. We spend the majority of our time together in the Organization House of the resort which is in the midst of its 100 year anniversary celebration. As Sarah describes, much of the room today is as it was a century ago, the room has become a piece of history and one of the many reasons the Wigwam is a member of ‘Historical Hotels of America’. She continues to share with us more history of the resort as well as some unique features such as the doors and windows throughout the property that pay homage to the resorts founders, Goodyear Tire and Rubber. After our time with Sarah we ventured to Reds Bar and Grill and enjoyed the delicious and renowned Arizona burger paired with their exclusive brew the Wigwam ale (both highly recommended). Be sure and book your next vacation, or if your local like us your next staycation, at the beautiful Wigwam resort, you will not be disappointed. Be sure to say hello to Sarah and let them know that the No So Native Podcast sent you. Enjoy! Special Guest: Sarah Boyd.
