The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939)

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939)

This week, we take a trip to Paris and cover the 1939 version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame! From the beloved Victor Hugo literary classic to the silver screen, this timeless tale of humanity (and all of the passion, cruelty, kindness it contains) has captured hearts throughout centuries.  If you're a history buff, in addition to being a film buff, you'll be fascinated to learn how the movie's screenwriters created a metaphor for real-world events leading up to World War II.  We're so grateful a listener recommended watching this film (the first time for us!); it's a wonderful way to become more acquainted with Quasimodo's story beyond the 1996 Disney retelling!

The Lighthouse: What Do You Do With a Drunken Sailor

The Lighthouse: What Do You Do With a Drunken Sailor

We take a look at Robert Eggers’ latest THE LIGHTHOUSE which stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson as a couple of salty sea dogs tending a secluded lighthouse in what might just be the Twilight Zone. It’s a beautifully photographed black-and-white film shot with vintage lenses with careful attention paid to period details not just in the set dressing and wardrobe, but with the dialects and even the mannerisms. Dafoe and Pattinson deliver amazing performances and the mood and sense of dread are as thick as the New England fog, but do all those things add up to an excellent film? Join us for a discussion about why this film worked or didn’t, and why it’s bad luck to mess with a seagull.

SPOILER WARNING: This episode contains MAJOR SPOILERS which means important story details will be revealed. We always advise listeners to: Watch First Listen Later.

Music composed and performed by Burk Sauls.

Heists Gone Bad: Sterling Hayden Noir or Stop Cryin' and Get Me Some Bourbon

Heists Gone Bad: Sterling Hayden Noir or Stop Cryin' and Get Me Some Bourbon

The Cinemondo gang of hooligans takes another look into the darkness at a couple of heist films from the 50s starring Sterling Hayden. John Huston’s THE ASPHALT JUNGLE and Stanley Kubrick’s THE KILLING. Great writing, amazing casts, beautifully photographed and just fun to watch. If you want to know why not to become a career criminal, check these two films out for a look at how upside-down things can get, even when you have a fool-proof plan that can’t go wrong.
