Episode 4: Breaking the Broadcast Barrier

    :: DROPPING EVERY TUESDAY SUMMER 2023 ::

“I was there to be me. I broke the door wide open,” says Ms. Clayton about her pioneering career as a broadcast journalist. As the first Black member of the Press Club, the first to question the lens of an all-White media, and the first Black person to have their own talk show, her legacy as a journalist showed an industry—and America—that race, visibility, and access matters. Ms. Clayton’s character, authentic voice, and raw talent attracted a diverse audience in Atlanta and other markets. She traveled to many TV stations to share her insights and show other outlets how to open their doors to people of all colors. In one of her most well-known interviews, she even inspired KKK Grand Dragon Calvin E. Craig to change his mind about his view on Blacks, publicly renounce his position and go on to work for Civil Rights.

    Tastemakers: Jessica B. Harris

    Tastemakers: Jessica B. Harris

Jessica B. Harris (1948-present) is a journalist, cultural historian, and author. She has published twelve books about the foods and foodways of the African diaspora.

Food has been a unifier for millennia, not just gathering people together to share a meal, but acting as a warm introduction to new histories and traditions. This February on Womanica, we’re celebrating Tastemakers - the Black chefs, cooks, and food historians who created new foodways and preserved important culinary stories of the past. The impact of chefs like Pig Foot Mary, Mama Dip, and Georgia Gilmore stretch far beyond the culinary scene - uplifting their local communities and inspiring those who came after them.

History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn’t help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. On this Wonder Media Network podcast we explore the lives of inspiring women in history you may not know about, but definitely should.

Every weekday, listeners explore the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of groundbreaking women throughout history who have dramatically shaped the world around us. In each 5 minute episode, we’ll dive into the story behind one woman listeners may or may not know–but definitely should. These diverse women from across space and time are grouped into easily accessible and engaging monthly themes like Educators, Villains, Indigenous Storytellers, Activists, and many more.  Womanica is hosted by WMN co-founder and award-winning journalist Jenny Kaplan. The bite-sized episodes pack painstakingly researched content into fun, entertaining, and addictive daily adventures.

Womanica was created by Liz Kaplan and Jenny Kaplan, executive produced by Jenny Kaplan, and produced by Liz Smith, Grace Lynch, Maddy Foley, Brittany Martinez, Edie Allard, Lindsey Kratochwill, Adesuwa Agbonile, Carmen Borca-Carrillo, Taylor Williamson, Ale Tejeda, Sara Schleede, Abbey Delk, and Alex Jhamb Burns. Special thanks to Shira Atkins.

    The (News)Room Where It Happens

    The (News)Room Where It Happens

This week, Tre’vell and Jarrett take us into the room where it happens: the newsroom.

The past few weeks have seen the world galvanized around the Black Lives Matter movement following the death of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department as well as the deaths of Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery. The protests around the world have sparked debate about reform, defunding and restorative justice.

Black people online and in protest have been sharing their experiences with Anti-Blackness and racism in all of our American institutions.

While the nation attempts to decipher what defunding the police actually looks like, we are also seeing a push for an honest look at how welcoming (or not) newsrooms are to Black journalists. From the media's issues with inclusion to the way Black journalists like Yamiche Alcindor and Omar Jiminez have been treated for just trying to do their job to the shared stories we've been reading through the week on and offline, newsrooms and other forms of media have a long way to go toward parity.

Jarrett and Tre'vell unpack what they love about the newsroom and some of what they don't love about the burden of being a Black journalist.

But before we dive deep into this topic we've got…

    A Tough Question

Black military and law-enforcement officers are under the microscope this week. Are you an African American law enforcement officer? Let us know how you're feeling at this time?

    DIS/Honorable Mentions

This week, Tre'vell has an honorable mention for the newsroom of the LA Times for catching up and putting a capital "B" in Black people. Say it with your chest, next time!

An honorable mention to the honorable Mrs. Beyoncé Knowles Carter for her stirring digital commencement speech.

An honorable mention to young Black activists actors doing what needs to be done including Keke Palmer, Amber Riley and John Boyega.

A Dishonorable mention from Jarrett to Congressional Democrats for their Kente cloth stunts.

A dishonorable mention goes out to Georgia's voter suppression efforts happening right now.

Finally, an honorable mention for everyone sharing their stories with the #Everyday tag. Click here to read more about it.

S1E6: Increasing Representation in the Film Industry with Cha Quallis

It’s so important for young people to have diverse role models in every field. This rings true to our most recent guest Charnelle “Cha” Quallis, who joins us to discuss diversifying the film industry, especially in the editor's room. While there is a recent proliferation of female editors in both fiction and non-fiction storytelling, the industry continues to lack representation from female editors of color. We talk about why we need more diverse decision-makers in the film industry, the importance of championing young talented editors of color, and we begin to tease apart some of the pervasive diversity challenges that continue to afflict Hollywood.
