Sunshine Foss - Building a Community-Driven Wine and Spirits Travel Shop with Happy Cork

Sunshine Foss - Building a Community-Driven Wine and Spirits Travel Shop with Happy Cork

    About Sunshine Foss:

Sunshine Foss is a woman of many talents. Born in Brooklyn, New York to St. Lucian parents, Sunshine had the best of both worlds: Brooklyn roots with an upbringing on the beautiful island of St. Lucia – affording her the opportunity to flourish and cultivate the woman she is today. Upon returning to the concrete jungle of New York, Sunshine once again moved – this time to Miami where she pursued her first passion, design. While living in the sunshine state, Sunshine became known in the Miami community as the best kept secret for everything vintage.

A new shift in her career followed her return and marrying to Remo Foss; the two pursued a career in real estate – complimenting each other’s talents of sharp business and a keen eye for design. Two kids, available space, and a dream later: Happy Cork Wine and Spirits was born.

Sunshine’s love for design greatly influenced the feel and product selection while developing the Brooklyn-based store. From the wood pallet cash wrap to the tree stump hanging display, the store features up-cycled/ recycled merchandise along with an amazing assortment of wine & liquor. Sunshine spared no detail in ensuring Happy Cork is truly a happy place made for the community to find joy upon entering. Unlike other wine and spirits shops within the local community, customers are treated like guests, invited in to ask questions, touch the bottles, and indulge in all the store’s offerings.

The mommypreneur is constantly thinking of new ways to ensure the community Happy Cork serves is kept at the center. This commitment to community includes featuring local artists, working with other small businesses to keep the block clean, and hosting events – currently virtual – as a means to continue cultivating beautiful connections amongst the people Happy Cork serves.

5 Things In 15 Minutes / Always Assuming

5 Things In 15 Minutes / Always Assuming

I originally started this newsletter with a story about a mistaken assumption I made but my editor told me, “It comes across to me like you are downplaying biases… and I think this also shows your privilege that you don't have to deal with biased situations as others do.”

I’m here for accountability. It’s my job to keep my team both diverse and psychologically safe where each person feels comfortable expressing constructive feedback directly to me. I’m always still learning – and yes, I still have mistaken assumptions.

A few weeks ago, I had a sales conversation with a medical professional who told me about a recent time in which an “older, white doctor from the South Suburbs” misgendered a transgender patient. My mind painted a picture of that doctor. I asked, “Did the patient file a complaint against him?” Turns out the doctor is a woman. I was embarrassed about that mistaken assumption in front of a potential client.

It’s remarkable. All the work I do, and my assumptions and biases still show up. My privilege still shows up. And if it shows up for me, I’m sure it shows up for you as well. But the more we talk about it, the more we can interrupt it.

Here are the good vibes I found this week:

    1. New D.C. Strip Mall Is Dedicated To Black-Owned Businesses
    2. President Biden Signs Cantwell-Capito Equal Pay Bill Into Law
    3. North Carolina Updates License Plate Rules & the Roads Just Got a Whole Lot Gayer
    4. Chipotle Plans to Hire 15,000 Restaurant Workers as It Plans Double in Size to 7,000 Restaurants in the Coming Years
    5. You Can Now Add Top-Surgery Scars, Binders, and Hearing Aids to Your ‘Sims’ Characters

Financial Impact Challenge – Comcast, SoloFunds and HoneyComb Credit

Financial Impact Challenge – Comcast, SoloFunds and HoneyComb Credit
During COVID small businesses were hit hard and those owned by women, Black, Hispanic and Indigenous people even more so. In 2020 41% of Black businesses, 32% of Latino businesses, and 30% of women-owned businesses closed and of those that survived, 80% are now experiencing financial challenges. Amid financial instability and lack of cash flow, operating expenses have become the top financial challenge for small business and also for the people within underserved communities. Comcast NBCUniversal sought to find new solutions to this systemic challenge with their Financial Impact Challenge that identified and invested in HoneyComb Credit and SoLo Funds to provide lending alternatives that are equitable, empowering, and community-driven. Featuring: Antonia Dean, Rodney Williams and George Cook.
