The Bloomer Report: Walk a Mile

The Bloomer Report: Walk a Mile
I speak with Nathan Gage from James Ling High School (EMSB) who discusses his project: Walk a Mile in my Shoes 2.

The project was an evolution of a previous project where donated shoes were upgraded with art. This year, they brought in a filmmaker to help the students make great videos!

The Bloomer Report: Masks, Masks Everywhere - A Student Initiated Recycling Project

The Bloomer Report: Masks, Masks Everywhere - A Student Initiated Recycling Project

In Dec 2020, students in Stephanie Jonker’s grade 5/6 class were asked to look around and identify an authentic community need. Since this was in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, what they saw were so many blue disposable masks being thrown away, or littering the ground.

Using a grant from LEARN’s I Belong project, they decided to TAKE ACTION.

Ms. Jonker and the students followed a Community Service Learning process to address this authentic need and implement a Mask Recycling Project in their community.

Check out LEARN’s Community Service Learning planning tools and templates to TAKE ACTION in your own community.

    The Bloomer Report: Slam Poetry

    The Bloomer Report: Slam Poetry

The Bloomer Report is hosted by Ben Loomer and showcases conversations with teachers working in English Schools across Quebec. Featured educators are leading projects that engage their students and their results need to be shared widely. The hope is that others will be inspired to replicate these projects in their own school and community.

A conversation with Maria Raskin, an English Language Arts teacher from Marymount Academy (EMSB) takes us through her spoken word unit that she brings to every class she enters.  Starting with an introduction and culminating in performance, student engagement is a key feature of this genre.  Maria’s efforts let students dive into the writing process and the project lets their creativity shine.

S3 EP 06: Lisa Congdon - Be Brave.

S3 EP 06: Lisa Congdon - Be Brave.

Lisa Congdon is a fine artist, illustrator and author of seven books, but she did not begin her professional life as an artist. It was not until her thirties, when she went to an art class with her brother, that Lisa discovered her love for painting and drawing. Before that, she worked in the education field – first as a teacher and then as a director at an education non-profit. In 2007, at the age of 40, she made the decision to leave her job to focus on becoming a professional artist full time. With her late start on the creative career path, she is often referred to as a late bloomer. Lisa stands as an example that taking the time to bloom into what you want to be – and being okay with the fact that the change may be slow – is indeed all worth it.
