    Episode 425: Can I Get A Witness?

    Episode 425: Can I Get A Witness?

October ends on more of a suspenseful note than a horrific one but that may be enough to not want a phone to ring during viewing. On the latest in physical media, Peter Sobczynski joins Erik Childress to talk about the cultural horror elements of the latest Criterion release. There’s also a snarky self-referential horror film that pre-dates Scream. Kino has a cornucopia of 1980s ninja goodness and Peter even has something positive to say about a comic book movie. On top of all that there is one of the best action films of the year, one of the best performances of Harrison Ford’s career and another round of the master of suspense in 4K.

    0:00 - Intro

    1:18 - Criterion (Nanny)

9:14 - Ronin Flix (There’s Nothing Out There)

15:41 - Kino (Enter the Ninja, American Ninja, American Ninja 2: The Confrontation, The Challenge)

31:25 - Universal (The Alfred Hitchcock Classics Collection Vol. 3) (4K)

    59:16 - Arrow Films (Witness (4K))

    1:06:19 – Warner Bros. (Blue Beetle 4K)

1:10:38 – Paramount (Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (4K))

1:15:16 – More Recent Theatrical & Streaming Titles

Comic Book Bears Podcast Issue #270: Steve Bryant and Don Cardenas vs Blue Beetle

Comic Book Bears Podcast Issue #270: Steve Bryant and Don Cardenas vs Blue Beetle

If this were the 1970s we would call this episode Comics Book Bears Triple Action! Press play and get ready for an extended triple treat!

First, we are joined by writer Steve Bryant and artist Don Cardenas who join us to discuss their Kickstarter campaign for the second issue of Evie and the Helsings! The miniseries follows Evie Van Helsing of the famed vampire hunting Van Helsing family as she navigates life between two worlds - the rock scene where she fronts a band and the family business. It's like Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets This is Spinal Tap by way of Ash Versus Evil Dead. Steve and Don cover what metal bands and horror films are influencing them and so much more! The Kickstarter still has a few days to go and the link is below!

Second, we transition to cinematic talk and discuss Blue Beetle, the 14th installment of the DC Extended Universe. Blue Beetle was directed by Ángel Manuel Soto and stars Xolo Maridueña as the title character alongside Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez. All the CBB boys saw it and offer up what they thought of Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle's origin story!

Third, we still manage to get in a comic book roundtable to wrap it all up! Caleb discusses the latest reboot of The Avengers by Jed MacKay and C.F. Villa! Bill takes on Tales of the Titans #1 featuring Starfire! And Steve chooses The Devil's Cut #1 (or "that DSTLRY one-shot"), an anthology collecting samples of new work from the initial creative line-ups for DSTLRY's fall debut as a new publisher to chat about!

Blue Beetle Review, Hair Care Revelations, and a Call to End Racially Motivated Crimes

Blue Beetle Review, Hair Care Revelations, and a Call to End Racially Motivated Crimes

Here's a glimpse of my recent adventures - from discovering a standout superhero movie, Blue Beetle, to finding a hair hack that's a game-changer for textured hair like mine. Tune in as I rave about the enjoyable ride that Blue Beetle was, why it should be next on your watch list, and the hilariously memorable character that became my favorite. But wait, there's more! I'll also walk you through a hair routine revelation I unearthed on TikTok. Layering mousse and gel, who would've thought? This trick offers the perfect blend of volume and definition, a total lifesaver for those battling humidity-induced frizz. And just in time for the changing seasons, I've got new merch – all ready for fall and Halloween.

Though we're having a ball with these updates, there is a serious matter close to my heart that needs our attention. The issue of racially motivated crimes is an ugly reality that we can't afford to ignore. A devastating incident in Florida has rekindled this discussion and today, I lend my voice to it. Let's talk about unity, about love, about the need to see beyond colors. My heart aches for the families affected by this horrific act, and I remind you and myself that our journey against racism and prejudice is far from over. Let's use this conversation as a step towards change, towards a world where we see each other for who we are - beautiful human beings. Stand with me, and let's make a difference.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Welcome back to this weeks episode of The Blackdog Podcast.
This week Jim is away. So Lee tries to fill the void with extra dose of poorly delivered dad jokes before we move on to everyones week, including Eltons shock that there is a national cinema day and Darren falling into a hell of generic superhero cliches watching Blue Beetle, followed by Jurassic Park.

Lee on the other hand, climbs Elizabeth Tower and gets his insides liquidised thanks to close proximity to the Big Ben bell as it struck the hour. As well as visiting a "pug cafe" and watching in quick succession the Daniel Craig James Bond movies and gaining a new appreciation for them in the process.

Then, after a bit of feedback (and a possible threat of watching more Reb Brown movies in the future its on to this weeks film) which due to a small streaming error changed from the scheduled film The Vikings, into Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny... Which may actually be about Archimedes going to Timpsons key cutters, watch repairs and shoe weather treating

    oh dear...

    Episode 52: Blue Beetle

    Episode 52: Blue Beetle

DC is punching back at Marvel's extended universe with a new addition: Blue Beetle. But does Jaime Reyes have what it takes to take on Kord Industries... or more importantly, a great movie worth rewatching? In this episode, Maverick and Avalon have an animated discussion on this new movie, and how Joseph Campbell's roadmap to a great story can be followed TOO closely.

Dive into DC Podcast: Blue Beetle

Dive into DC Podcast: Blue Beetle

Jaime was already a hero to his family being the first Reyes to graduate from college. When Jaime went to Kord Industries that day he was just trying to get a job but instead a pretty girl shoved a Big Belly Burger box in his hands and told him to guard it with his life. Inside the box was not a sandwich but a mysterious being that would change Jaime's life forever.  The shiny blue beetle seems like an object at first, but it is more than it seems. The magical scarab has a mind of its own and chooses to bestow its powers on to Jaime.  Join Silver Vox and Green Butterfly as we discuss Blue Beetle, a major theatrical release full of fun and family.  If you are ready, let’s dive in!

    Strays

    Strays

Strays is a new-ish breed of R-rated talking dog comedy, and it's definitely bad...to the bone. But are we making our way poundtown? Pawing fast? Leashes past, and we're Homeward Bound? That's right, we're reviewing Strays this week, plus Jon does a mini-review for Blue Beetle.

    Show Notes:

    • 00:00:00 – Blue Beetle mini review and what else we might cover soon
    • 00:17:15 – Strays

Strays was directed by Josh Greenbaum and written by Dan Perrault. The cast (a mix of voice and live-action) includes Will Ferrell, Jamie Foxx, Randall Park, Will Forte, Harvey Guillén, Rob Riggle, Brett Gelman, Jamie Demetriou, and Sofía Vergara. Strays opened in theaters on August 18 through Universal Pictures and has a 93-minute runtime.

Our intro music this week is “Which One?” by Glimlip & .multibeat.
