Keeping Old School Alive: Master Modder Mano Agulian on Metal Shaping & Custom Fabrication | Ep. 19

Keeping Old School Alive: Master Modder Mano Agulian on Metal Shaping & Custom Fabrication | Ep. 19

In this episode of the “In The Garage Automotive Podcast,” master-modder Emanuel “Mano” Agulian discussing modifying and customizing European import cars. They discuss Mano’s background and approach to car building, automotive trends, tips for DIYers, and the importance of keeping custom fabrication accessible. He focuses on customer service and building relationships in addition to quality craftsmanship. He also emphasizes starting with the basics when learning how to work on cars yourself.

    TOPICS

    • Mano started building and modifying cars at a young age, learning metal fabrication skills from Armenian immigrants in Los Angeles. He focuses on European imports like BMW 2002s.
    • Building a car to be driveable, versatile, and durable takes trial and error over many projects. Simplicity in the drivetrain makes the cars easier to maintain.
    • SEMA 2023 trends have gone from OEMs showcasing concept cars, to individuals with wild builds, to perfect restorations of vintage American cars, but small vendors with new tech are still there.
    • Beginner DIY projects like lowering suspension or upgrading wheels teach skills and build confidence. Following factory wiring colors and using widely available parts ensures any mechanic can service the car.
    • Custom one-off builds require an ongoing relationship with the builder for maintenance. Ask builders how they design for serviceability before starting a project.
    • Hands-on car building trades are dying off, but still offer careers for people not suited to academic paths. Building cars can also provide purpose and instill self-confidence.

    Here We Are

    Here We Are

I managed to get back on track and get the episode out on time. Go me! This episode covers the latest big event that the Davidson family is facing and the vortex we are now in which is known as summer. I also talk a bit about a song I'm revisiting called 'Here We Are' and give you a peek into where it's at today so we can compare to where it is down the road.

Song 43 is recorded on the Shure MV7 Podcast Microphone and mixed on SRH440A headphones.

    Restoring A Classic

    Restoring A Classic

Hi and welcome to The Driving Experience.  This is Kevin Pennell.  Over past episodes, we’ve talked about classic cars, driving classic cars, classic car events, well today, we’re venturing into the process of the build, building a classic and some of the details surrounding that build.  We’re looking at some of the unexpected hurtles that you can encounter.  Consider some advice about things to look for and maybe a few things to avoid.  We’re even going to briefly travel down a side road into off-roading a vehicle.  No doubt, we’re covering some ground in this episode of the The Driving Experience with Fern Amorim as he’s in the process of Restoring A Classic.

Fern Amorim can be contacted via a search on FaceBook using his name Fern Amorim

The Blue Book referenced in this episode is "The BMW 2002 A Comprehensive Guide to the Classic Sporting Saloon" by James Taylor and Mike MacArtney available on Amazon.

    Living Her Driving Experience

    Living Her Driving Experience

Get your driving gloves, driving glasses, and driving spirit ready.  It’s time once again for the Driving Experience.  This is your host Kevin Pennell.  This week we’re visiting with Clara Loose from central Florida.  A couple years ago, Clara was interviewed for an article in BMWs Roundel Magazine as one of the youngest members of the BMW CCA.  So, that’s one part of her story.  Her first BMW 2002 saved her life after she was run off the road and rolled it nine times, and she walked away!  If that isn’t enough, she also has a passion for restoring a riding classic Vespas.  Keep listening as we hear from Clara Loose who is Living Her Driving Experience!

    Andrew Wilson & Vern

    Andrew Wilson & Vern

    Welcome to...

    The Driving Experience!

Kevin Pennell here.  I’m excited to welcome my good friend Andrew Wilson! Andrew is a long time BMW and car collecting enthusiast.  If you attend car events, concours, BMW Foundation events and many other car enthusiast venues, you may just find Andrew, usually with one or maybe two of his Vintage cars, that is if he finds another driver.  I was fortunate enough to be a second driver once for an event in Maine some years ago.  I was privileged to drive Vern.  We’ll hear about his driving experience in bringing Vern to his new Maine home in this episode!  Enough rambling, let’s talk with Andrew Wilson as he shares his Driving Experience with Vern!
