Episode 36 - Advisors Bring Community and Perspective to Business with Mike Calhoun

Episode 36 - Advisors Bring Community and Perspective to Business with Mike Calhoun

LEARN THE WISDOM TO BE SUCCESSFUL

On this episode of The Game Changing Podcast, we welcome Mike Calhoun, the CEO of the Board of Advisors. The mastermind format brings together a group of individuals committed to improving their craft and sharing their expertise.

Mike shares how bringing synergy to community members is a strong catalyst for growth. Just being around people who have achieved the successes you want teaches you by osmosis, and vice versa.

This is amplified when you have dedicated advisors who watch you and bring valuable perspectives to the table. Mike also shares anecdotes about his first jobs and how problem-solving is the top skill to his success.

    GAME-CHANGING NUGGETS

Mike: A community of advisors makes verification straightforward

"There is the opportunity to have that speed of trust because you have an affinity with members, but you also have the ability to quickly verify. It's hard. I mean, in certain, let's call it regular relationships or regular environments, it's hard to know who is the trusted resource."

Mike: Learn the wisdom of those who carry even greater weights than you

"Sometimes we're like oh my gosh, I can't believe the weight that I'm carrying currently at the moment with taxes and payroll and this and that, and the list goes on. And then sitting across the table who's doing 10 times what you're doing, going through 10 times the crap, and they have wisdom. They have peace, and calm. They have experience."

Mike: Problem-solving through situations is the key to success

"Investing in yourself so that you can invest in others is how you become valuable. So what I figured out is early on, how do I become valuable to other people? Because as soon as I'm valuable, part of is your presentation of yourself, part of it is that communication, part of it is having the ability to say yes and figure things out and problem-solve because what that does is it gives you experience, and that's all really people want."

E90: Jane Veron - The Desire to Give Back

After a career in management consulting, marketing and strategy, Jane was determined to apply her professional skills to make an impact in the local economy.  Jane saw both the need and the opportunity:  The need arose from small businesses with great ideas and passion but a lack of resources and expertise.  The opportunity existed in the enormous pool of professionals who had a strong desire to redeploy their business acumen.   She built TAP to harness the untapped potential of both small businesses and local professionals.

Jane is mission-driven, seeking to mobilize women for economic impact, and merges her business acumen with her management, coaching, public sector and nonprofit work. Prior to TAP, Jane spent her career in strategy and marketing, working at Bain & Company, American Express, and as an independent consultant.  She also has experience in private equity and venture capital as an investor and board member.

Jane currently serves as a Scarsdale Village Trustee.  She has also held civic leadership positions as Chair of the Scarsdale Planning Board, President of the League of Women Voters of Scarsdale, Chair of SNAP, and President of the Fox Meadow Neighborhood Association.  In recognition of her sustained and significant impact on the community, she received the Mayor’s Award for Exceptional Leadership the Daily Point of Light Award granted by Points of Light, the organization founded by President George H.W. Bush to recognize volunteer service.

Jane has been a member of numerous boards and currently serves on Harvard’s Women Leadership Board, the Harvard Business School Alumni Board, the Regional Plan Association, the Scarsdale Foundation, and the Yale Westchester Alumni Association.  She is also a member of Golden Seeds and Harvard Angels.  Jane earned a BA magna cum laude from Yale University and an MBA with honors from Harvard Business School.
