    142. The Rescuers Down Under

    142. The Rescuers Down Under

Who’s ready for a little outback adventure? Kevin and Chris revisit The Rescuers Down Under, the oft-forgotten Disney movie which sits snugly between The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, in the early days of Disney’s animation renaissance. With Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor returning as those selfsame Rescuer mice Bernard and Bianca one last time (barring a new Bernard-only sequel—RIP Eva, but happy 94th Bob!), you hardly ever hear about this one, possibly because unlike its contemporaries, it’s not a musical. Is its relative obscurity deserved? Or is this an under-heralded gem?

Elf Part 1: Spaghetti Candy, Big Meets Ten Commandments, A Jewish Lover of Christmas and Nearly Chris Farley

“I like to smile, smiling’s my favorite”

Robert is back after a brief hiatus to explore the first major Christmas classic of the new millennium, Elf. Even though he’s gone back and forth on it, Robert does consider Elf a great Christmas movie which works thanks to Will Ferrell’s talent.

Learn about how writer David Berenbaum was a movie obsessed Jewish child who also happened to love Christmas movies, how his brother Michael would work with Coppola and the Coen Brothers, how David’s loneliness in LA inspired him to write Elf and how the script nearly became both Jim Carey and Chris Farley vehicles.

    Episode 375: F For Feeling

    Episode 375: F For Feeling

Peter Sobczynski returns to get you up to speed on what to add to your physical media collection. You may want to skip some of the bad horror on the show but there are also war movies and westerns featuring Steve McQueen, Gary Cooper and Bob Newhart! There’s a musical from Jacques Revette, a film from Patrice Leconte and a new 4K edition of one of Terry Gilliam’s best. Peter also certainly wants you to know about a film with Lea Seydoux that flew under the radar at the end of last year and that he is certainly a champion for one of the biggest hits of 1983.

Rarified Heir Podcast #108: Eric Bonerz (Peter Bonerz)

Rarified Heir Podcast #108: Eric Bonerz (Peter Bonerz)

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Eric Bonerz whose father Peter Bonerz you all know from his acting and directing career. Likely, most of you know Peter Bonerz as the role of Jerry the Dentist on The Bob Newhart Show. But did you know that Peter directed some of the biggest (and some of the most bizarre) television shows of all-time? From Wingsto Murphy Brown to Home Improvement to Friends and News Radio, Peter Bonerz has more than 350 directing credits to his name. We also learn about some of his pilots & short lived shows like Apple Pie which did not make it. One, about humans playing dogs with Chuck McCann and Charles Martin Smith, might be the weirdest of them all.

We talk to Eric about being on set like Catch-22 and Medium Cool and how his dad made it a point to be home for dinner and to be a parent who was present. Always. We also discuss Eric’s own career, working at the Beastie Boys (wink, wink) store X-Large, his offbeat Bay Area band Eskimo and how he was the PD on the internet radio channel LuxuriaMusic.com which is yours truly favorite radio station.

If The Day The Clown Cried, Yul Brenner, the band Primus, tagging along with Adam Arkin or seeing Keir Dullea eating sushi alone in the 80s mean anything at all to you, you must listen to this episode. The Rarified Heir Podcast’s latest episode begins, now.
