Concert Attack Suspects Charged & Bonds Are Back...Maybe

Your morning briefing, the business news you need in just 15 minutes.

    On today's podcast:

    (1) Russian authorities showed footage of four men charged in court with carrying out the deadly Moscow concert hall attack after interrogations that traced their origins to Tajikistan.

    (2) French authorities have raised their security alert level to the maximum following the deadly Friday attack in a Moscow concert hall.

    (3) Bond traders are cautiously reloading wagers that burned them just weeks ago as the Federal Reserve and key global peers finally appear set to begin reducing interest rates as soon as June.

    (4) Britain's ruling Conservative party will promise to keep the generous "triple lock" on state pensions in the upcoming election despite the spiraling cost of the commitment, Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt said.

    (5) As Donald Trump sits in a Manhattan courtroom Monday for a hearing related to one of his criminal cases, he'll also be facing a moment of truth for his finances: a deadline that same day to either post a bond to cover a $454 million civil fraud verdict or risk having New York state start the process of seizing some of his assets.

Mark Cabana on the Fed, QT and Treasury Funding

Mark Cabana on the Fed, QT and Treasury Funding

It's a busy week for the bond market with a meeting of the Federal Reserve and the release of the US Treasury's quarterly refunding statement. While a lot of people have been focusing on when the Fed will cut benchmark interest rates, there's also an ongoing debate about how fast the central bank will shrink its balance sheet given last year's banking crisis and the recent drama in the repo market. In this episode, we speak with Mark Cabana, longtime rates strategist at Bank of America, about the big questions lurking behind the week's events. We talk about who will buy all the bonds the US is selling, what will happen to bank balance sheets as rates go down, and the impact of liquidity on the broader market.

Gilt Trip: Did UK government bonds almost blow up the financial system?

Gilt Trip: Did UK government bonds almost blow up the financial system?

The gilt market was the last place anyone expected systemic risk to almost blow up the UK pensions industry, force the Bank of England into emergency bond purchases, cause the chancellor to be sacked, and make the government reverse its flagship economic policy.

But are we now out of the woods? And what other markets are vulnerable to sharply rising bond yields and similar ‘doom-loop’ dynamics?

And in today’s Dumb Question of the Week: What is a haircut?

Toby Nangle on What We Just Learned From Gilt Market Madness

UK financial assets just experienced once-in-a-generation type moves in the wake of the government's mini-budget announcement. Not only did both gilts and the pound sell off dramatically, they rebounded just as dramatically after intervention from the Bank of England. What does it all mean? And how did pension accounting contribute to the massive volatility? On this episode of the Odd Lots podcast, we spoke with Toby Nangle, an economics and markets commentator, who spent several years running asset allocation at Columbia Threadneedle. He explains why we saw such a dramatic move and what the whole thing taught us about market structure.

Why central banks are baffling investors

Why central banks are baffling investors

The Federal Reserve has spent more than a decade buying up government debt as part of a post-2008 program to support the economy, also known as quantitative easing. Now with inflation reaching record highs, those days are over, and a new era of quantitative tightening is emerging. On this week’s episode, the FT’s markets editor Katie Martin explains how markets expect to grapple with the change.

What on earth has been going on in Italy and what does it mean for your money?

What on earth has been going on in Italy and what does it mean for your money?

Global financial markets have been flying up and down and all over the place this week and it’s all got to do with one boot-shaped country in the Mediterranean.

Italy has found itself embroiled in a power struggle between Eurosceptic populists – winners of the March general election – and the pro-EU establishment.

The ramifications have spread across the globe and will affect Britons from big-time investors to anyone building up a pension pot.

As we write this a coalition deal has been reached in Italy, likely to avert a proposed snap election. But this story is moving so quickly that just hours ago when we recorded the podcast there was no deal on the table. Even more reason as things helter-skelter forward to step back and work out what is going on and how on earth we got here – as This is Money editor Simon Lambert offers in his back-to-basics explainer.

Also in this episode, Simon, presenter Georgie Frost and personal finance editor Rachel Rickard Straus talk about what you can do to stop your dream house move falling through, and whether proposals to make tax on savings and dividends simpler will work – or just see savers pay more tax.

And finally, in troubled times for the high street, they look at one retailer bucking the trend.

    Enjoy.
