111: The Danger of "Stand Your Ground" Laws

111: The Danger of "Stand Your Ground" Laws

More than 37 states in the US allow a person to use deadly force against an intruder or attacker under the guise that they are defending themselves or their property. This is due to what are called  “Stand Your Ground'' laws-- but those laws are highly controversial. In this episode, hosts Kelly and JJ are joined by three amazing guests: Alyssa Ackbar, the legislative coordinator for Team ENOUGH’s Florida Lobbying Collective and a state director with March For Our Lives, as well as part of their “Youth Congress''; Dr. Caroline Light, Director of Undergraduate Studies and Senior Lecturer on Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Harvard -- who also wrote the book Stand Your Ground: A History of America’s Love Affair with Lethal Self-Defense; and Dr. John Roman, a senior fellow in the Economics, Justice and Society Group at NORC at the University of Chicago who has extensive experience on the effect race plays in “Stand Your Ground'' defenses. Together, we are discussing the recent development with Stand Your Ground laws and how these laws have the potential to cause more harm than good.

    Mentioned in this podcast:
Is There Racial Bias in “Stand Your Ground” Laws? (PBS)
Why Do People Buy Guns (Roman)
Race, justifiable homicide, and stand your ground laws: Analysis of FBI supplementary homicide report data (Urban Institute)

97: White Supremacy, "the Great Replacement," and Gun Violence

Tragedies in places like El Paso, Charleston, Charlottesville, Oak Creek, Pittsburgh, Louisville, and many others, have led many to the same conclusion: that in many cases, gun violence and white supremacy are tied together. To begin to untie that knot, hosts Kelly and JJ are joined by two individuals who know supremacy groups inside and out: Seth Daire and Corinna Olsen. Seth  was once a member of the Christian Identity movement, and now is a researcher on extremism and the far right. Corinna was a leader in the National Socialist Movement who left, publicly disavowed the movement, and converted to Islam. Together, we discuss why people join hate groups, why they leave, and the roles guns play in all of these groups.

    Mentioned in this podcast:
    Sisters in Hate (Darby)
Leaving White Nationalism (Southern Poverty Law Center)
The Flexibility of Grand Anti-Semitic Conspiracy Theories (Extremism Research)
The American right wing is enabling a dual crisis: gun violence and white supremacy (the Guardian)

93: Looking for the Helpers with Fred Guttenberg

Fred Guttenberg loved watching Mr. Rogers with his daughter and his son when they were little. Their favorite piece of wisdom was: In the midst of tragedy and catastrophe, find the helpers.  He has carried this life lesson with him, and is now sharing it in his new book, Find the Helpers: What 9/11 and Parkland Taught Me About Recovery, Purpose, and Hope. Fred is the father of 14-year-old Jaime Guttenberg, who was killed when thirty-four people were shot at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in 2018. Since her death, Fred has been fighting tirelessly to pass gun violence prevention legislation, and to honor Jaime's life with the non-profit Orange Ribbons for Jaime. Together, he and hosts Kelly and JJ talk about his journey since Jaime's death, and how he has been able to survive thanks to the kindness and compassion of others.

    Mentioned in this podcast:
“Always look for the helpers. There will always be helpers. Because if you look for the helpers, you’ll know there’s hope.” (Fred Rogers, interview with Television Academy, 1999
Overcoming Grief Through The Humanity Of Others (Orange Ribbons for Jaime)

90: Senator Chris Murphy on "the Violence Inside Us."

90: Senator Chris Murphy on "the Violence Inside Us."

Is America destined to be, and remain, a violent nation? Why does the US have such high rates of gun violence? To discuss, JJ and Kelly are joined by Jon Lowy, Chief Counsel and Vice President of Legal at Brady, and Senator Chris Murphy, a United States Senator for Connecticut. While Senator Murphy devotes himself to public service, he has been very outspoken about fighting for gun violence prevention. Today, we're discussing his new book, “the Violence Inside Us,” and the role the gun lobby and legislation has played in shaping America.

The Violence Inside Us (Random House Books)

    88: Prisons, Punishment, Policing--and Guns

    88: Prisons, Punishment, Policing--and Guns

On September 9, 1971, 1,281 of Attica prison's approximately 2,200 inmates rioted and took control of the prison, taking 42 staff hostage. That riot--and the following four days of negotiations, followed by a massacre--had a major impact on prisons and policing in the United States. In particular, it changed how people thought about the rights of currently and formerly incarcerated and firearms. To discuss this all, and how it relates to 2020, Kelly and JJ are joined by the Pulitzer-prize winning historian Heather Ann Thompson. Dr. Thompson is the author of the celebrated text Blood in the Water: The Attica Uprising of 1971 and its Legacy and the fantastic book Whose Detroit: Politics, Labor and Race in a Modern American City. She is here today to talk with us all about gun violence, segregation, policing, incarceration, and the Voting Rights Act.

    Mentioned in this podcast:

Blood in the Water (Heather Ann Thompson)
Why Mass Incarceration Matters to our Cities, Economy, and Democracy (Ash Center)
The Ugly History of Racist Policing in America: Interview with Heather Ann Thompson (Vox)
How Prisons Change the Balance of Power in America (Atlantic)
Inner-City Violence in the Age of Mass Incarceration (Atlantic)
