The FUTURE of Recreational Drugs & Their POTENTIAL Could Change Your LIFE | David Nutt

The FUTURE of Recreational Drugs & Their POTENTIAL Could Change Your LIFE | David Nutt
Research in the fields of neuroscience and pharmacology over the past several decades have resulted in countless positive benefits for humanity. But until very recently, certain classes of drugs had been rigorously excluded from clinical trials - namely, the class of drugs commonly known as psychedelics. Fortunately, a handful of organizations around the world have been making breakthroughs in psychedelic drug research, working in cooperation with government regulators to answer this question: what are these drugs doing to our brains and bodies? One such researcher is today’s guest - Dr. David Nutt. He and his team at Drug Science have brought together leading drug experts from many different clinical backgrounds, with the goal of providing clear, evidence-based information about how a wide range of drugs - from CBD to PCP - impact the human system. In his latest book, Cannabis (seeing through the smoke): The New Science of Cannabis and Your Health, Dr. Nutt gives an in-depth look into one of the most commonly used recreational psychedelics on the planet: cannabis. In today’s episode, we discuss David’s findings on how cannabis affects different systems in the brain, how it differs from other classes of drugs, what the future of drug research looks like, and much much more! Dr. David Berson: Understanding Your Brain's Logic & Function

Dr. David Berson: Understanding Your Brain's Logic & Function
In this episode, my guest is Dr. David Berson, Professor & Chairman of Neuroscience at Brown University. Dr. Berson discovered the neurons in your eye that set your biological rhythms for sleep, wakefulness, mood and appetite. He is also a world-renowned teacher of basic and advanced neuroscience, having taught thousands of university lectures on this topic. Many of his students have become world-leading neuroscientists and teachers themselves.  Here Dr. Berson takes us on a structured journey into and around the nervous system, explaining: how we perceive the world and our internal landscape, how we balance, see, and remember. Also, how we learn and perform reflexive and deliberate actions, how we visualize and imagine in our mind, and how the various circuits of the brain coordinate all these incredible feats.  We discuss practical and real-life examples of neural circuit function across the lifespan. Dr. Berson gives us a masterclass in the nervous system—one that, in just less than two hours, will teach you an entire course's worth about the brain and how yours works. Your Brain Is Not What You Think It Is, with Lisa Feldman Barrett, PhD

Your Brain Is Not What You Think It Is, with Lisa Feldman Barrett, PhD

What if the way you think about your brain and how and why it functions is just plain wrong? Lisa Feldman Barrett, PhD, a professor of psychology at Northeastern University and author of the book “7 ½ Lessons About the Brain,” discusses myths about the brain and her theory that it evolved not to think but to control our bodies, and that emotions are not something we experience, but things that the brain creates in order to make sense of the signals it receives from the world.

Are you enjoying Speaking of Psychology? We’d love to know what you think of the podcast, what you would change about it, and what you’d like to hear more of. Please take our listener survey at www.apa.org/podcastsurvey.

#175 Gut Health: Everything You Need to Know

Gut health is a hot topic these days, with more and more research showing that our gut health impacts so much more than simply our digestive system. The gut is now being implicated in a host of different conditions, including joint pain, brain fog, insomnia and depression. Over the past few years on the podcast, I have had the pleasure of speaking about the importance of gut health with some incredible experts, including neuroscientists, immunologists, nutritionists, and clinical researchers and in this week’s special episode, I have pulled together some of the very best clips from these conversations to give you a detailed overview on the science of gut health as well as practical steps you can take to improve it.

On this week's show, I speak to my guests about a variety of different gut-related topics. We discuss how the health of our guts is closely related to our physical health, our mental health, our immune systems and can impact how we respond to stress. We delve into what we should eat to improve our gut health and how restricting when we eat can also play a significant role as well. We talk about the role probiotics may play in improving our response to stressful events as well as their potential role in improving a variety of different health conditions. You will also hear advice for Irritable Bowel Syndrome and we discuss the low FODMAP diet and so much more.

This episode really is full of actionable tips that you can put into practice straight away. I've seen time and time again with my patients that taking simple steps to improve their gut health can have a profound impact on their overall health. I hope this episode helps you improve yours.

#166 BITESIZE | How 10 Minutes of Exercise a Day Can Improve Mental Health | Dr Brendon Stubbs

We all know that exercise is good for our physical health, but exercise can be just as powerful for our mental health.

Feel Better Live More Bitesize is my new weekly podcast for your mind, body and heart. Each week I’ll be featuring inspirational stories and practical tips from some of my former guests.

Today’s clip is from episode 97 of the podcast with clinical-academic physiotherapist, Brendon Stubbs.

His work is helping to provide much needed evidence of what we know instinctively - physical activity makes us feel good.

In this clip he explains why movement is not just good for our body, but also for our mind and why you don’t need to exercise for hours to feel the benefits. Just 10 minutes of light exercise a day can result in meaningful changes happening within your brain.

Best of: We don’t just feel emotions. We make them.

Best of: We don’t just feel emotions. We make them.
How do you feel right now? Excited to listen to your favorite podcast? Anxious about the state of American politics? Annoyed by my use of rhetorical questions? These questions seem pretty straightforward. But as my guest today, psychologist Lisa Feldman Barrett, points out there is a lot more to emotion than meets the mind. Barrett is a superstar in her field. She’s a professor of psychology at Northeastern University, holds appointments at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, and has received various prestigious awards for her pioneering research on emotion. Her most recent book How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain argues that emotions are not biologically hardwired into our brains but constructed by our minds. In other words, we don’t merely feel emotions — we actively create them. Barrett’s work has potentially radical implications. If we take her theory seriously, it follows that the ways we think about our daily emotional states, diagnose illnesses, interact with friends, raise our children, and experience reality all need some serious adjusting, if not complete rethinking.
