Why Do They Speak Portuguese in Brazil? (¿Por Qué en Brasil Se Habla Portugués?)
Do you know what’s one of the strangest things in Latin America? The fact that the biggest country in a Spanish-majority region (with a third of the total population in Latin America) speaks a different language: Portuguese.
You’d think that somehow, Brazil would have adopted Spanish like their neighbors, but they never did, and even today, it is a minority language among many others. So… why? Why does Brazil speak Portuguese?
Basically, it has a lot to do with its origins and how the colonized lands were divided when it came to the Portuguese and Spanish kingdoms, who now had practically full control of the South American continent.
…but I won’t go into the historic details here. It’s better if you watch the fascinating latest episode of the Learn Spanish with Stories podcast, instead!

Lettering Artist Jackson Alves
This is actually the fourth time Jackson’s been freelance. He’s not just quit jobs, he even once quit his own company.
But whereas the other times he was a ‘regular’ graphic designer, this time he’s spent a decade as a specialist: a lettering artist and calligrapher.
Regularly posting to Instagram and Behance got him noticed and grew an audience as commissions from around the world reached him at his home in Brazil.
He’s since launched online courses, prints, fonts and NFT collections, building his reputation so he can work when he wants around his family. There’s no sign of him quitting this time around.

Graphic Designer Victoria O'May
Brazilian creative Victoria was working in advertising in London when in 2013 she fancied a change.
A change of pace, country and language, and to help her do that she figured she’d go freelance in Spain.
After 3 years she took a job in an agency. Four years on she felt ready to freelance again. A pandemic and motherhood making the flexibility of working from home even more appealing.
Second time around Victoria felt much more prepared. In her positioning, her processes, her dealings with clients… in running her own business.
In this conversation we cover, amongst other things:
- the importance of a network of fellow freelancers
- getting to know clients properly
- working around having a child
- how some things you want to do just can't be done right now, and that's okay...

THE MAGRI'S (Leo's Brazilian Family) - ALTBAYS SHOW #159
Show 159 – The Magri’s (Leo’s Brazilian Family)
Welcome to the Altbays Show (Feat. Leo Magri)
Meet Lorelay, Eliana and Alcir Magri.
Our host Leo had the pleasure to have his family visiting Aotearoa New Zealand for the first time this summer. The last time they saw each other was in 2016!
Eliana and Alcir were amazed by how different NZ is compared to Brazil. They were surprised by how most houses don’t have gates or burglar’s bar and how everything fine is clean and tidy (Obviously, they did not visit many kiwi garages. Ha!)
The Altbays Show team added English subtitles to this great chat in Portuguese show, so you can enjoy the perspective of a couple who left their home country for the first time in their sixties, and how shappy they were to see what their son is doing on the other side of the world. Lorelay, Leo’s sister, talks about her adventures as an interpreter for her parents that cannot speak a word in English, what she things about the Coromandel and much more.
Enjoy this great, fun show here now!
ALTBAYS Show invites awesome people to have an honest, laid-back conversation. Our platform focuses on bringing communities together to grow and thrive.

Emily Kwok: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion and Peak Performance Coach
A true indicator of peak performance is experiencing joy even in the most challenging moments. According to Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Emily Kwok, the moments she spends enjoying her time on the mat with her opponent are indicators of her success. This week Emily returns to the podcast to share how her definition of peak performance and athleticism has changed over the years as she experienced parenthood, COVID, and a shift in perspective. Listen in as Emily shares insights into the different stages of life as a professional athlete, how to create awareness around the different levels of performance you achieve throughout your life, and the key questions to ask yourself when determining your limits. Emily also shares the liberating feeling of showing up to the mat and knowing you deserve to be there, as well as why she takes every opponent seriously.
Emily Kwok is a multi-time-international Brazilian jiu-jitsu Federation World Champion, a mixed martial arts veteran and co-owner and co-head instructor of Princeton, Brazilian jujitsu, peak performance consultant, and freelance writer. She is widely regarded as the early pioneer of Brazilian jiu jitsu in Northern America, being one of the first females to rise to prominence as the sport extended around the globe. She has spent the better part of the last decade working closely with Josh Waitzkin, training in the field of peak performance, exploring how to manage and induce optimal states in the self.
