Food For Thought: Cooking with Massimo and Friends, and Living the Simple Life

Welcome to Episode #14:  Food For Thought, Cooking from the Cookbook ‘Bread is Gold: Extraordinary Meals with Ordinary Ingredients’ as a project to see me though this year.  I have no doubt it will take me that long......And surrendering to the Simple Life as I know it.

Wow, things have changed so fast we barely know what will happen today nor tomorrow.  We are in the middle of unprecedented times, certainly in my own personal lifetime never mind my kids.  Italy is suffering so much as are most countries, and we are watching from the sidelines on guard to our own fate with this virus.  My prayers and thoughts are with those who are experiencing the harsh reality  and pain of this time.

In the short term I am concentrating my energies on what I can do today that is creative, intentional and purposeful.  Creativity is called for in times of crisis.

Making the decision to flat out cook from the bountiful ‘Bread is Gold’ cookbook is not a light one.  It takes time, thought, intention, resourcefulness and conviction.  Time will tell about the conviction part however I am enjoying the process and finding my way even if I am slightly anxious how this will turn out.  Onwards I say.......

Our first season just keeps getting better and better as one of the most acclaimed chefs on the planet, Massimo Bottura of Modena's Osteria Francescana, drops in to talk about his new book Bread is Gold. The book tells the story of his ambitious project at the 2015 Milan Expo where he brought 65 chefs from around the world together to show highly creative ways to use past-their-prime ingredients and minimize food waste. We also talk about how the project is distinctly Italian, why he considers New York City a second home, and some key turning points in his life. This famously high-energy, passionate chef brings it in this memorable conversation.

    THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:

Andrew is a writer by trade. If you'd like to support him, there's no better way than by purchasing his most recent book, The Dish: The Lives and Labor Behind One Plate of Food (October 2023), about all the key people (in the restaurant, on farms, in delivery trucks, etc.) whose stories and work come together in a single restaurant dish.

We'd love if you followed us on Instagram

Please also follow Andrew's real-time journal of the travel, research, writing, and production of/for his next book The Opening (working title), which will track four restaurants in different parts of the U.S. from inception to launch.

Episode 333: Massimo Bottura + Jameson Fink + Julietta

Legendary chef Massimo Bottura joins us once again, and this time it’s to share his new book, Bread is Gold. Massimo gives us insights into his fight to end food waste, and how he recruited 60 of the world’s best chefs to help tackle the issue by turning everyday ingredients into delicious recipes. Our good buddy, wine writer Jameson Fink, also stops in for another installment of “Snacky Tunes 5’s,” and this time he’s dropping some key advice on how to survive that big, daunting wine tasting. The final part of the show's trifecta is New York City electro pop singer, Julietta, who sits down with us to talk about her mom's Italian cooking, and also gives us a live in-studio performance of her latest single "Runaway."
