    The First Church

    The First Church

    Title:

The early church was full of excitement as they saw more and more people becoming Christians every day. Many people who had come to Jerusalem to celebrate Pentecost stayed longer to be with the rest of the new Christians. The church devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread (Lord’s Supper), and prayer.

The church is not a building but is made up of Christians. The church today does the same things as the early church.

Bible verses used in this episode:

    Tips for teaching:

    For Children:

    • To help children understand that the church is people instead of a building, first, draw an outline of a church building on a large piece of paper.  Then, ask the children to write names or draw pictures inside the outline depicting all of the people at church.  Once they have done this, then use scissors to cut away the outline.  All that is left is the people.  The saved people of God do not need a building to be the church.
    • Plan a way for the children to participate together in an aspect of church life that is unfamiliar to them.  They might prepare the Lord’s Supper for the church or interview the preacher and learn what preparations he is making for the upcoming sermon. A visit to a member’s home is another idea.
    • Older children might take photographs or make a scrapbook to show what your church does together.
    • Sing “Building Up the Temple” and talk about Ephesians 2:19-22

    For Adults:

    • Challenge the class to memorise these verses (or, as an alternative, just verse 42).  And then challenge several people to recite these verses in the class.
    • Print out the text for each member of the class.  Ask them to circle all the words and phrases that denote groups, such as “they spent time”, “everyone felt great respect”, and “all believers stayed together”.  How many of these describe your class?
    • Ask the class to brainstorm ways your class group can be more devoted to these four things (apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer).  Be creative.  What can you do to make your gatherings (your fellowship time) more meaningful and rich?  What can you do as a class to make each one feel special, loved and valued?  For example, one thing you can do to make prayer more meaningful is to pray at the beginning of class, in the middle and at the end.  One prayer is focused on praising God, another on the spiritual growth of your class, and the other on the needs the class has.  When you come together, make it a habit to eat together with a little twist.  Always include bread that the host will break at the start of the meal to signify fellowship, unity and friendship.

Notice, before the big event, a daily investment in small faith steps prepares us for the great storms of life! Paul started by being faithful in little things along this great path he is living.

Sea of Adria was in the middle of the Mediterranean while the Gulf of Adria what we today call the Adriatic Sea. As they near shipwreck, it becomes clear to the crew that Paul’s prophecy is coming to pass.  Fear is still present.  Some want to escape.  Now Paul is in control with divine authority. His insight is followed by the centurion. When the ship starts to run aground, the centurion wants to save Paul, and the prisoners so all make it to shore.

What is the purpose of the very clear and extensive account given by Luke here and not in Chapter 21? Notice the lack of calming the storm. Here there is something else that God is doing, namely, he is establishing the power of faith and God’s control over history in sight of overwhelming paganism. What could be construed as magic has no place in the very real fear of the elements of nature. God is not tinkering with natural and human processes with arbitrary interventions, but with the direction of the human heart by revealing the purposes and call of God.  See Luke 21:12-19.

When we are caught in the complexity of social entanglements, our faith in God must not be focused so much on the elimination of these circumstances but on God’s power that enables us to endure and so gain possession of our lives!

Here we find the real value of prophecy:  Though Paul is predicting the future and seeing it fulfilled, he is also a spokesperson for God! He advises, exhorts, comforts, strengthens, challenges as a servant of God whom he serves! And at the center of the storm and its ravages, fears, and confusion, he breaks bread.  Of the 276 on board, only 3 are Christians. Yet he includes all with dramatic results – not all believe, some try to escape, but all are brought to safety as he said they would. This act of faith changed the course of the events, as it gave courage, strength, and hope to all. Paul’s faith reminds us of Mary, who chose to believe God and whet he said would come to pass.  Put your faith in Jesus today.

    Devoted - Week 7 - A Universal Principle
While Luke is quite clear about many of the factors and characteristics at work in the early church of Acts 2, there is also a universal principle in play that receives no mention. This principle - which operates in both the natural world and spiritual world - is crucial to our ability to experience the abundant life that Jesus promises in the Gospels. Join us this week as we discover this universal principle at its role in our spiritual lives.
