Left of Greg #053: Your memory is self-serving.

Do you remember that one time... The truth is, you probably don't. Or at least not nearly as well as you think you do.

On this episode, Greg and Brian will be explaining how our memory works and why it’s not nearly as good as we think it is. They cover everything from how and why memories are formed and how our fragile "ego-system" can corrupt those memories. We also give you a few real-world examples of how you can get better at storing and recalling your memories.

Left of Greg #052: Tom Lake

Left of Greg #052: Tom Lake

In this episode, Greg and Brian are joined by former St Louis police officer Tom Lake. Just over 3 years ago Tom was shot twice in the face while sitting at a stoplight in his patrol car. Tom is on the show today to talk about what happened that night as well as what has happened over the last 3 years.

Tom tells us the story of what happened to him and everything that he's had to deal with over the last 3 years including his struggle with PTSD and depression and how the very department he worked for investigated him after he shared his stories of PTSD with other officers.

This was an incredibly powerful episode and it was an emotional conversation. You’re going to want to listen to this one all the way until the end.

Left of Greg #049: The case of Officer John Mitchell

In this episode, Brian and Greg are covering a case from Blackwell, Oklahoma where police officer Lieutenant John Mitchell was indicted for second-degree murder after shooting and killing an armed, active shooter.
Given the facts of the case, it was difficult for Brian to understand how a police officer can be charged with murder after killing a violent, fleeing felon who was also shooting at the police. As always, we try to dissect these cases through the lens of cognitive performance.

In this episode, Greg and Brian are joined by active-duty US Army officer Lt. Col. Andy Riise who is currently transitioning to civilian life after 20 years of service. For the last 10 years, he's been jumping out of perfectly good airplanes as a paratrooper and helping Green Berets put warheads on enemy foreheads as a JTAC (Joint Terminal Attack Controller).

Andy is an expert in the psychology of elite human performance and has taught at West Point and the Air Force Academy, in addition to consulting with professional athletes in sports, the US military, first responders and leaders in business.
