Dr. Aviv Regev - Computational Biologist and Head of Genentech research and early development

Dr. Aviv Regev - Computational Biologist and Head of Genentech research and early development

For our latest episode we are talking with Dr. Aviv Regev. Dr. Regev is the head of Genentech Research and Early Development. Prior to Genentech, Regev served as Chair of the Faculty and Core Member at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and as Professor of Biology at MIT and Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She is a founding co-chair of the Human Cell Atlas.

Broadly Speaking: The One with Dr. Corrie Painter

Broadly Speaking: The One with Dr. Corrie Painter

Dr. Corrie Painter is an 11-year survivor of primary breast angiosarcoma, diagnosed initially at 36 while married and raising two very young children. As the Founder of the nonprofit Angiosarcoma Awareness and the Associate Director of Operations and Scientific Outreach for the Broad Institute, she dedicates her life to cancer advocacy and research by engaging with metastatic breast cancer and angiosarcoma patents on groundbreaking genomic initiatives. This is a hell of a story, folks, with a 140-year old easter egg buried in there. Have a listen and enjoy the show.

S2E1: A Conversation with the Broad Institute's Anne Carpenter

S2E1: A Conversation with the Broad Institute's Anne Carpenter

On this season of Theory and Practice we explore one of the art of being a great biologist – marrying a problem to a solution, choosing the right biological question, and pairing it with the right technology.

Dr. Anne Carpenter is the inventor of CellProfiler and designed a method for coloring and analyzing cells. She works at the Broad Institute as the Senior Director of the Imaging Platform and is an Institute Scientist.

One of the things that strikes me about Anne's work is how visionary it is. She started doing this a decade ago or more, at a time when computer vision was not nearly as mature as it is today. The idea that you could just image cells and extract biologically meaningful information from them was not at all obvious when she first started.

Theory and Practice is a presentation of GV and Google AI.

Hosted by Anthony Philippakis (Venture Partner at GV) and Alex Wiltschko (Staff Research Scientist with Google AI), Theory and Practice opens the doors to the cutting edge of biology and computer science through conversations with leaders in the field.
