My Mom Was the Brownie Lady with Alia Volz

My Mom Was the Brownie Lady with Alia Volz
This week's guest Alia Volz is the author of the new book "Home Baked - My Mom, Marijuana, and the Stoning of San Francisco." Alia’s mother Meridy was known to countless people around the Bay City during the 1970’s as “the Brownie Lady.” Meridy eventually ran the largest underground pot brownie business of the time. Sticky Fingers Brownies started out as a great way to make money... and ended up being an essential medical supply for gay men in San Francisco during the AIDS epidemic.

An account of dozens of people’s memories, Volz’s book is a valuable history lesson about the many unsung heroes who got us to this era of semi-legalization - where marijuana is recognized as a medicine in 33 states, and considered an “essential business” during a pandemic.

Bronnie's work has been to understand what it is that people who live well with pain do - and how we can learn from them.

How Much Pot is in a Pot Brownie?

How Much Pot is in a Pot Brownie?

Sounds like a perfect world--chocolate and THC, deliciously combined into a mouth-watering brownie. But how much THC are you actually getting? New research shows that for some reason, when you mix THC and chocolate together it's difficult to get an accurate reading of the potency. Host Julie Nygard, owner of The Chocolate Therapist chocolate company, summarizes the research to help you make an educated decision.

    The Brownie

    The Brownie

The Scottish Brownie formed a class of being distinct in habit and disposition from the freakish and mischievous elves. He was meagre, shaggy, and wild in his appearance. Thus Cleland, in his satire against the Highlanders, compares them to

“Faunes, or Brownies, if ye will,
Or Satyres come from Atlas Hill.”

06.07.14: 5th-Anniversary Uncelebration, 'Squatch VS Vespa, GM VS Recalls, GM VS Itself, International Podcasting Awesomeness and Garambiance

Ahhh yes, one of those episodes...  We hit on everything that makes gearheads tick (now, in our fifth year!), ratcheting up the garambiance for a review of Gov'ment Motors' troubles with millions of recalls, unsold Cadillac hybrids littering dealership lots, the Aztek (yuuuuup), using a whole bunch of made up words to describe them. We're gearheads - if there ain't a word for it, we'll build one to suit.

Taking time out from congratulating Command Master Chief Larry Wilske, candidate for the 53rd District, and reminding you that if you don't vote, you don't get to argue, Hostus Maximus Justin Fort and SuperMeg (fresh from her Vespa-crashing Sasquatch attack) also dig into Calvin & Hobbes creator and super-recluse Bill Watterson, Anthrax, Michelle "Call Me Patrick" Obama, Dr. Who's repeated new-season fails, pot-use fails, Seth "Fail" McFarland, gun rights, doubling our Swiss audience, and why Bill "Ruby Ridge" Gore is not good.

Remember, just because the Simpsons did it doesn't mean you shouldn't.

#129: A Brownie A Day Keeps The Doctor... Wait, What Are We Talking About Again?

Auntie Dolores (that's not really her name) met me at the Comedy Store patio to talk about edibles. She makes some of the best brownies, pretzels, lolipops, nuts, and popcorn you can find in California. We talked about how she makes things, her worries with the authorities, and when she got started. Plus we also reminisced about our history with pot cookies.
