DCMTB - ep. 6 (The Butcher)
It was a dark and gloomy night. The street lights flickered. His shadow appeared in the doorway. Was he a killer? There was something in his hand, was it a knife? Are we in danger?
No
It was the Brownsville Butcher , and he brought beer. We sat down for another episode of the podcast with him, drank a beer and talked about the best way to build a bike scene in a small town.
Kimberly Avila
32 year old Kimberly Avila vanished in Brownsville, TX in the early morning hours of May 13, 2017.
Kimberly was born Ramiro Avila, Jr, and as a transgender woman, was no stranger to mistreatement at the hands of others. As a sex worker, the danger she faced was only compounded. Did the fact Kim was transgender, or that she worked as a sex worker factor in to her disappearance, or are those details simply red herrings? 5 years after she vanished, it seems that we are no closer to finding out what happened to her, and her family is desperate for answers. There have been no confirmed sightings of Kim since she vanished despite being well-known in the local LGBTQ community, and her bank account and social security card have not been used.
Kim's sister Ivon discusses Kim's case in this episode.
At the time of her disappearance, Kim was described as being 5'8-6'0, 200-220 pounds, and Hispanic with brown hair & eyes; she was last seen wearing a dressy black short-sleeved blouse, a black skirt, black fishnet stockings, black stiletto heels, a black wig, and gray contact lenses. There is a $10,000 reward in this case.

1906 Ft. Brown, Tx Raid, Colin L. Powell & The Chronicles Of USBC Military Experience
We discuss the 1906 Brownsville, TX Affair. We also place Colin L. Powells distinguished career/legacy in the context of the System of Racism White Supremacy being in full affect. We discuss the anti-black mistreatment that black veterans within the U.S. Armed forces fell victim to and or had to endure and overcome. We use clips of Neely Fuller Jr & Maya Angelo to add context.

Ep. 36: "Saving Our Children and Their Education During A Pandemic" (with Dr. Nadia Lopez)
Many parents are having a difficult time home-schooling their children. However, remote learning can be just as, if not more, frustrating for the child. In Ep 36: “Saving Our Children And Their Education During A Pandemic,” Dr. Nadia Lopez walks us through the challenges affecting most New York City public schools, especially those in impoverished neighborhoods, like Brownsville. Dr. Lopez highlights the hardships of homeschooling, discusses IEP / SETSS students, identifies the weaknesses and inequities in our educational system, challenges the public to be more active in elections, and offers sound advice to discouraged parents. Dr. Lopez even leaves Jay speechless in this powerful episode.
Ep. 36: "Saving Our Children and Their Education During A Pandemic" with Dr. Nadia Lopez
Dr. Nadia Lopez of Mott Hall Bridges Academy gives us inside access to the challenges our children, educators, and schools are facing during and after this pandemic. As a fellow parent of Latinx and Caribbean descent, this NYC school leader is overcoming her own personal mental health experience and is still championing for her scholars to maintain access to their education. As COVID19 continues to wreak havoc on the weaknesses in our community, students in poor areas could fall prey to generational issues if we do not provide educational resources and emotional support. Dr. Lopez shines a bright light on how we can prioritize our children’s education and strategize our collective voices to make valuable changes in the educational system, that disproportionately affect black and brown children.

#189 - Funkadelic Toothlessness - The Flyness of James "Fly" Williams
This week, we check out a legend of the New York City playground basketball scene, who made it all the way to the pros, before his interesting personality, and flair for the dramatic got him banished back to the playground, and eventually to a much worse place than that. He seemingly cleaned up his act after recovering from a gunshot wound, and some time in prison, by helping kids, and becoming a role model... until the police came breaking down the door, accusing him of being a drug kingpin! Super Fly!
Be an icon of the playground, lose half of your bodily organs from a shotgun blast, then become the king of New York, drug style!! It's James "Fly" Williams!!
Check us out, every Tuesday!

Pickpocket Proverbs
In this episode, Gordy and Mia get real with each other. They are both a work in progress and they share decision-making processes, storytelling preferences, and of course, more about 'back in the day.'
As promised, Gordy explains how Flatbush took him from amateur to professional in the pickpocketing world.

For Kids' Sake
It turns out that libraries weren’t always so friendly toward children. That started to change around the turn of the 20th century, thanks to a librarian who is pretty much unknown today. We're taking a field trip to a library truck in the Flatlands, a story time at Central, and to Brownsville in 1914...

Completely Conspicuous 253: Smokin' in the Boys Room
Part 3 of my conversation with guest Ric Dube as we dissect a legendary 1970s boogie rock classic. I've also got the Bonehead of the Week and music from Titus Andronicus, The Henry Clay People and Action Jets.
Show notes:
- Recorded late at night at More Lost Time world HQ
- "Smokin' in the Boys Room" came out in 1973, was revived in the Ramones movie Rock 'n Roll High School
- Ric questions the deeper meanings of the song: Is it about drugs, sex or both?
- Rebellion took on a much different meaning in the '70s
- 12 years later, Motley Crue covered the song and hit #16 on the charts
- Cub Koda reportedly influenced stage style of Peter Wolf of J. Geils Band
- Brownsville Station's had a radio "hit" called "Martian Boogie"
- Seven minutes of cheesy effects and stupidity
- ZZ Top was much better at boogie rock
- Koda was making rockabilly solo albums on the side and selling them himself
- Not many weed songs in rock anymore
- Dube talks about the origins of beatboxing, in 1971 from a band called The Counts
- Those awkward moments watching risque TV with your parents
