Our annual winter adventure to a cabin in the woods is here! It's one of our favorite trips of the year.  We hunker down, eat lots of good food,  soak in the hot tub, drink lots of hot (and spiked) drinks and just enjoy nature and solitude- we even brought friends this year!  On the road we discuss what will surely be a new classic EVIL DEAD RISE. In the epic conclusion of our 3-part retrospective on the Sam Raimi Spider-Man saga, Odian Levy and I return for one final web-slinging adventure into "Spider-Man 3." As the closing chapter of a trilogy that captivated a generation, this film brought a tumultuous yet heartfelt ending to the story of Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker.

Under Sam Raimi's visionary direction, "Spider-Man 3" presented a narrative brimming with complexity and controversy. Released over fifteen years ago, it left a distinct impression on both Odian and myself, challenging our expectations of superhero narratives. The film's ambitious attempt to weave multiple storylines and introduce iconic characters like Venom and Sandman has been a topic of much debate among fans and critics alike.

In this episode, we delve into the intricate web of "Spider-Man 3," exploring its narrative choices, character developments, and the emotional weight carried by Peter Parker as he confronts his darkest challenges yet. We analyze the portrayal of heroism and villainy, examining how the movie navigates themes of forgiveness, identity, and the consequences of power and revenge.

As we've done throughout this series, Odian and I share our personal reflections on the film, including how our perceptions have evolved over time. We discuss the broader impact of the trilogy on the superhero genre and its legacy in shaping the cinematic landscape.

Friend of show Comrade Yui returns to discuss John Carpenter's 'Escape From L.A.', his raucous and acidic sequel to 1981's 'Escape From New York'. Derided by both audiences and critics, we offer a defense of the film as a vital work of Carpenter's late period that manages to thrill as an action picture, while wryly thumbing its nose at the corrupt values of Hollywood and its own existence as a prototype for modern "legacy sequels".

We begin by talking Carpenter in the 90s, a time when he was taking his biggest swings (while also facing some of his most frustrating conflicts with studios). Then, we take a look at the fascinating tenor of the film, and how it balances the acerbic, raw energy and wit of the original film while taking aim at societal ills of 1996 America with even more directness and urgency than its predecessor. Finally, we compare the film to other great movies (and one 2021 sequel specifically) that have followed in the spirit of 'Escape From L.A.', reckoning with legacy, while also boldly subverting audience expecations in pursuit of revealing the deeper truths and authenticity of their creators.

Obviously you've seen hundreds of movies in which a fame weary Elvis Presley didn't die and in fact switched places at the peak of his stardom with an impersonator, the real King of Rock and Roll instead winding up in a convalescence home with a cancerous lump on his penis alongside an African American John F. Kennedy, skin dyed by the C.I.A. and with portions of his brain replaced by sand, teaming up to fight the mummified remains of an Egyptian Pharaoh but BUBBA HO-TEP is the best and least typical one. PHANTASM director Don Coscarelli puts down the psychic metal death orbs for a moment to deliver an adaptation of Joe R. Lansdale's novella which turns out to be a surprisingly thoughtful meditation on aging and fading sexuality, lamenting the lack of dignity afforded to those in declining health and reminding us that being old does not make you worthless as well as giving us some good gags, some very silly special effects and that deliciously preposterous plot. All that and featuring the always beloved Bruce Campbell and, improbably, civil rights activist Ossie Davis.

If I have any advice for you, it would be if you find a scripture called the book of the dead, maybe don’t read it out loud to your whole family. This addition to the evil dead franchise was a perfect little bounce back into the original to the reboot to just being on its own terms.

Chris and Taylor go back to a cabin in the woods to review The Evil Dead Trilogy, later also referred to as Army of Darkness, is an American horror film franchise created by Sam Raimi. The original trilogy includes The Evil Dead (1981), Evil Dead II (1987), and Army of Darkness (1992), all written and directed by Raimi, produced by Robert G. Tapert, and starring Bruce Campbell. The series revolves around the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, an ancient Sumerian text that wreaks havoc upon a group of cabin inhabitants in a wooded area in Tennessee.
