“The Bloody Protestants” Part 2: Northern Ireland’s Match of the Day…

“The Bloody Protestants” Part 2: Northern Ireland’s Match of the Day…

As he locked up Bellaghy Wolfe Tone GAA Club in May 1997, Sean Brown was murdered by loyalist gunmen.

The sense of injustice has deepened since the British Government passed the Legacy Act last year.

This week, a High Court judge Mr Justice Kinney was so appalled by the behaviour of the state that he pulled the plug on the inquest and recommended a public inquiry. This on the day the inquest was told that surveillance of a leading suspect had mysteriously been suspended on the day of the murder.

Among those present at the inquest was the new GAA president Jarlath Burns, a man who has embraced his Protestant neighbours, vocally supported the PSNI before it was popular and is as happy at Windsor park as he is in Croke park (unless Armagh are playing).

On Free State, Joe and Dion look at the case and the relentless search for justice.

Free State with Joe Brolly and Dion Fanning is a Gold Hat Production in association with SwanMcG.

Almost exactly a year on from our first episode, Calum and Andy are joined by Iain Anderson, founder and Executive Chairman of the lobbying group Cicero, who has switched allegiances to Labour after being a Conservative supporter for four decades. They discuss Labour's prospects as the self-proclaimed party of business, and how that might weigh on Scotland. After a chaotic week in Westminster, we try and figure out where we find ourselves now, and what we've learned. And ahead of Scottish Conservative Conference, the trio dissect the party's role within the Scottish political sphere, and why former leader Ruth Davidson could well have been First Minister, but was held back.

    RTÉ The Musical: Part 5

    RTÉ The Musical: Part 5

The RTE scandal is not about pay-offs, flip-flops or Ryan Tubridy’s salary, it’s a story of how the media was manipulated in Ireland. From the Troubles to Gaza one point of view has always been given an easier ride than the other.

On RTE The Musical Part 5, Joe and Dion look at who has been platformed by the national broadcaster and who is excluded.

RTE’s future is a story that is much bigger than the national broadcaster. It’s not just about the media but about who governs Ireland.

The multi-billionaire defended his ownership of Twitter in a last-minute interview live from the company’s Silicon Valley HQ.

This extra episode of Americast features his rollercoaster conversation with the BBC’s James Clayton in full.

It came out of an email exchange over the BBC’s labelling on Twitter as "government-funded media" – Musk replied himself and agreed to an interview "tonight".

Asked about the mass layoffs of Twitter staff, misinformation on the platform and his unusual work habits, Musk at times tries to do the interviewing himself and admits that owning Twitter has been "quite painful".

    Stopping The Shootings

Donald Trump might be dominating the news again, but Nashville is still grieving after six people were murdered in the latest school shooting. The Tennessee tragedy was one of 130 mass shootings this year alone in America.

For this extra episode, we return to the question we planned to bring you earlier this week: where does gun control go from here? We explore what would and wouldn’t make a difference.

And celebrity lawyer Ben Chew, who was Johnny Depp’s lead attorney last year in a defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard, gives us his view of how future Trump court appearances might play out, as well as his verdict on Gwyneth Paltrow’s $1 ski crash trial.

HOSTS: • Justin Webb, Radio 4 presenter • Katty Kay, US special correspondent • Marianna Spring, disinformation and social media correspondent • Anthony Zurcher, North America correspondent

    "Marianne Williamson For President"

    "Marianne Williamson For President"

Sarah is on holiday so the BBC's US Special Correspondent Katty Kay steps into her breach on Americast, equipped with stories of Dr Anthony Fauci saving a guest at the prestigious Gridiron dinner.

The team speak to Marianne Williamson, who found fame as Oprah Winfrey's 'spiritual advisor', and who now wants to usurp Joe Biden to become the Democratic nominee for President, despite newly-emerged allegations of bullying her staffers.

There are other challenges for Biden this week, though - Marianna Spring talks us through how the president's controversial plans to approve oil drilling in Alaska are being received online.

And a former economist at the United States Department of the Treasury, Brad Setser, explains how damaging the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank is for the US.

Americast is presented by the BBC’s US Special Correspondent Katty Kay, Today host Justin Webb, social media and disinformation correspondent Marianna Spring, and North America correspondent Anthony Zurcher.
