Episode 6: Making the Most of your University’s Career Center with Dr. Barbara Hewitt

Career centers at universities are such powerful resources and it should never be underestimated just how much utility they can offer students. Here to talk about how you can maximize this potential in the early stages of your career explorations, is Dr. Barbara Hewitt, who is the Executive Director of Career Services at the University of Pennsylvania. We have an insightful and wide-ranging conversation, covering timeframes, interviews, preparation and so much more! Dr. Hewitt really breaks down each component of the process, starting with when to first approach a career center, what to do in preparation and the extent of the services. Our guest also shares some great tips for internships. One of the most powerful takeaways from this interview is Dr. Hewitt's emphasis on the help that alumni networks can supply, and after exploring the best ways for students to arrange the right kind of conversations, she reminds us of her central thesis about the job search: to be open to trying things and failing. For all this and more from a great wealth of knowledge, join us today!

This was recorded in Jan 2021. When Dr. Hewitt discusses timing for internships and says “about now,” she’s referring to mid-January.

Dave Deskins: The New Reality of Career and Tech Ed

Dave Deskins: The New Reality of Career and Tech Ed

After years of being misunderstood, Career and Technical Education has recently seen a resurgence in public schools. Among calls for schools to “prepare students for the real world,” the pendulum of attention has swung back towards CTE.

Dave Deskins has seen the pendulum swing back and forth multiple times. Growing up, he experienced another growth and decline in CTE. Now, as superintendent of Ohio’s Greene County Career Center, he's strengthening not only the career outlook for students but also the economy of the entire region.

In this episode, Deskins shares his experiences leading during different eras of CTE and how programs like these can change a region.

From Jobs to Career: Rethinking Student Employment

From Jobs to Career: Rethinking Student Employment

Topping the list of why students attend college is the desire to successfully enter into a career upon graduation. On-campus employment provides opportunities for students to gain experience in their future careers with academic and professional development opportunities, while at the same time, serving as a source of a financial resource.

Higher Ed Rewired spoke with Amelia Parnell, from NASPA, the professional organization for Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and Debra Hammond, of the California State University, Northridge University Student Union on their research and practice on how higher education should rethink the student employment experience as a student success strategy.

If you haven’t already, please review us on Apple Podcasts. It will help bring new listeners to learn more about student success efforts.

Higher Ed ReWired is produced by California State University.

I was surprised that many current students are not making use of their campus careers centres. This is a resource that helps your learning institution assist you in the broader set of career exploration conversations that arise when you are exposed to new ideas, new people, new technologies.

For final year students who are under time pressure to graduate with a job in hand, as well as keep on top of exams, projects and academics, the Career Resource Centre can help you leverage your most precious resource - your time.
