    5. Jenny Chu: The Spiral of Time

    5. Jenny Chu: The Spiral of Time

In this episode, Jenny Chu and I created a rich conversation on time that stretched beyond strict, societally-agreed definitions. We reached into relational, experiential exploration of how we can be with time, calling into question our perception of time, our sense of the spirit of time, our shared love for the work of the Italian physicist Carlo Rovelli, and how studying astrology has changed our relationship with time. Jenny has a truly brilliant mind and is a beautiful conversationalist so our discussion (spiralically) branched out in many different ways that feels very organic.

In addition to the topic of time, we also explored the Buddhist idea of the Middle Path, the I-Ching and other forms of divination, and even how Evolutionary Astrology connects with Buddhism. All of these seemingly disparate topics are brought together in such a seamless way throughout this conversation. A little bit about our astrological birth charts - Jenny’s North Node in Gemini is in very close conjunction with my Moon in Gemini, and I think you’ll probably be able to hear it. This conversation feels lit up and connected with the energy of Gemini and Sagittarius in the best way possible.

Here's Jenny's bio: Jenny M. Chu is a thinking artist and she's an older sister to a younger brother and raised by two immigrant parents by way of Saigon and Hong Kong. She has studied evolutionary astrology with Sabrina Monarch, embodied astrology with Renee Sills, and is currently in the Transits and Predictive Astrology Cohort led by Oak of Oak Astrology that centers decolonization and the BIPOC experience.

What is Conciousness? Carlo Rovelli in dialogue with Buddhist scholar Geshe Namdak

What is Conciousness? Carlo Rovelli in dialogue with Buddhist scholar Geshe Namdak

Prof. Carlo Rovelli enters in dialogue with Geshe Tenzin Namdak on the connections between Buddhist philosophy, as exposed by the scholar scholar Arya Nagarjuna, and the discoveries of modern quantum physics.

This teaser is an excerpt of Science and Wisdom LIVE's upcoming e-Learning course on 'Buddhist Philosophy & Quantum Physics',  which will be launched in the coming months in collaboration with Jamyang London Buddhist Centre. Besides Dr. Rovelli and Geshe Namdak, the course will also feature Prof. John Dunne and Dr. Michel Bitbol.

    ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Prof. Carlo Rovelli is a theoretical physicist known for his work in quantum gravity. Born in Italy he has worked in the United States, France and Canada. He has founded the Quantum Gravity group at Aix-Marseille University. He is also a member of the Institute Universitaire de France, honorary professor of the Beijing Normal University, Honoris Causa Laureate of the Universidad de San Martin, Buenos Aires, and a member of the Académie Internationale de Philosophie des Sciences. In 1995 he has been awarded the Xanthopoulos Award for “the best relativist worldwide under forty”. Prof. Rovelli has written several global best sellers among which are Seven Brief Lesson on Physics, which was translated in 44 languages, The Order of Time, and the recent Helgoland on quantum theory. He has been included by the Foreign Policy magazine in the 2019 list of the 100 most influential global thinkers.

Geshe Tenzin Namdak first worked as an environmental researcher having graduated in hydrology from Van Hall Larenstein University, The Netherlands. He started studying Buddhism at Maitreya Institute in 1993 and took ordination from His Holiness the Dalai Lama before engaging in his formal studies in Buddhist philosophy and psychology at Sera Jey Monastic University, South India, in 1997. He completed the entire twenty-year Geshe program at Sera Jey in 2017 and the traditional one year Vajrayana study program at Gyume Tantric College in January 2019, the first Westerner to do so. Because of his deep interest and background in science and as a member of Sera Jey’s Education Department he spoke on and organized various dialogues and conferences on contemporary science and ancient contemplative wisdom of the mind and its philosophy. Currently, he is the resident teacher at Jamyang Buddhist Centre, London, and teaches worldwide.

Scott Snibbe is a pioneering interactive artist and augmented reality entrepreneur, is the host of the meditation podcast A Skeptic’s Path to Enlightenment. Snibbe is a twenty-year student of Tibetan Buddhism whose teachers include Geshe Ngawang Dakpa, Choden Rinpoche, Ven. Rene Feusi, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Gyumed Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Jampa, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Inspired by his teachers, he leads meditations that infuse the pure lineage of the great Buddhist masters with science, humor, and the realities of the modern world. Over the course of a career as a digital artist and entrepreneur, Snibbe has created bestselling art, music, and social apps, and collaborated with musicians and filmmakers including Björk, James Cameron, and Philip Glass. The Physics of Time

    The Physics of Time

Time is seen as part of the fundamental grammar of the world. Yet there is little evidence proving it actually exists. With the help of quantum physicist Carlo Rovelli, this episode seeks to mop up some of the biggest misconceptions surrounding time — exploring the theories and hypotheses shaping our current scientific understanding of it.

    This episode in brief

    1. Absolute Newtonian time | 03:00

We often think of time as a substance that lives outside of us and flows from past to future. But while useful, there is no strong scientific evidence showing this physical view of time is actually true. This section considers the origins of a universal “true time”, popularized by Isaac Newton, and the enduring impact it has had on the concept of time.

    2. The challenge of Einstein’s relativity | 05:20

Einstein’s theories of relativity completely reimagined physical time, ushering a whole new level of existentialism into the theory of time. This chapter highlights some of his biggest points — like the illusion of universal clock time and simultaneity, and the idea of a 4D block universe which fixes all events ever to occur in time.

    3. Directional time and entropy | 10:40

We consider time to be a fundamental part of our universe, but there is in fact only one natural law suggesting it exists and has a direction. This section lays out the idea of entropy — the tendency towards disorder within nature — as possible proof for “moving” time, as well as its limitations. It acknowledges how even objective scientific laws are subject to intrusions by our own subjective human perspective.

    4. The quantum perspective with Carlo Rovelli | 14:00

When we study the smallest physical quantities of the universe, our popular notions of time quickly lose meaning. Drawing from his latest book, The Order of Time, world-renown physicist Carlo Rovelli proposes a new model for thinking about time. He explains why the answer to time’s mystery arguably has as much to do with how humans work as with the manner of the cosmos.
